A storm for the ages, a stopgap funding bill and Joe Biden sees dead people
"The impacts of this storm are historic and the damage that has been done is historic," DeSantis said. "We've never seen a flood event like this, we've never seen a storm surge of this magnitude."

Link to the quote: https://news.yahoo.com/live-updates-hurricane-ian-makes-221151523.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall

This was the week that the state of Florida took a direct hit from what is believed to be one of the most powerful hurricanes in US history. It hit Florida Wednesday with 150-mph maximum sustained winds and massive flooding. Thus far there are reports of at least 13 dead, widespread fooding, residents stranded in their homes, 911 centers that were swamped with calls and more than 2.6 million Florida homes and business that were without power as of Thursday. First responders are now working around the clock. Residents of Ft Myers say there is nothing to come back to with most of the city destroyed. Sanibel Island experienced damage so severe that the island has been cut off from Florida's mainland.

Ian has now regained strength and is heading towards the Carolinas. What the Carolina coast will experience might be nothing compared to what southwest Florida woke up to Thursday morning.

From a political perspective, recent events such as this devastating storm and the death of Queen Elizabeth have taken the media's midterm narratives off the front page. Democratic strategists will not settle for page two and thus:

"The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol  has postponed a hearing scheduled for Wednesday due   to  Hurricane Ian , which is forecast to hit Florida the same day as a Category 3 storm.

"In light of Hurricane Ian bearing down on parts of Florida, we have decided to postpone tomorrow's proceedings. We're praying for the safety of all those in the storm's path," the committee said in a statement. "The Select Committee's investigation goes forward and we will soon announce a date for the postponed proceedings."

The hearing was supposed to be the committee's ninth and final hearing, and reveal some of the information the committee said they learned this summer.

Committee Chair Bennie Thompson  said earlier this month that the committee plans to put together an interim report in mid-October, and will finalize the report before the end of the year."

https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/house-january-6-committee-hearing-postponed/

And of course all things Trump would also be delegated to the second page. Oh well, we all know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men ....or in this case rats.

The week:

The stopgap funding bill: "The Senate approved  legislation to keep the federal government operating until mid-December as well as fund new aid for Ukraine. The legislation, which passed 72-25, would prevent a partial government shutdown after the current fiscal year expires Friday night. “This legislation avoids a very bad thing—shutting down the government— and does a lot of good things: money for the people of Ukraine, funding for communities reeling from natural disasters, aid to families with their heating bills, just to name a few,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) on the Senate floor.

The bill now must be passed in the House, before heading to President Biden’s desk.

Without passage of the bill, a partial government shutdown would occur. A shutdown would trigger furloughs for hundreds of thousands of federal workers, but critical functions such as border security, benefits payments and airport operations would continue."

Where is Jackie?: When Indiana Rep. Jackie Walorski died in a car crash over a month ago, Joe Biden performed the eulogy and later offered condolences to her brother. Yesterday on a stage in Indiana, Biden forgot she was dead and asked "where's Jackie?" "Is Jackie here?"  A child might answer: "she's in heaven Joe." It turned out to be a twofer for the administration as the vice president hailed the alliance between the US and North Korea. The same child might say: "Kamala, there is a difference between North and South Korea."   None of which is very reassuring for the American public.

The shrinking economy: The  U.S. economy  shrank for the second consecutive quarter in the three months ended June, according to the final estimate from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, meeting the criteria for a so-called technical recession as raging inflation and higher interest rates weighed on spending.

The updated report, released Thursday, showed that gross domestic product (GDP), the broadest measure of goods and services produced across the economy, shrank by 0.6% on an annualized basis in the second quarter. That is below the initially reported 0.9% decline and unchanged from the second reading of a 0.6% decline.

Economic output already fell over  the first three months of the year , with GDP tumbling 1.6%, the worst performance since the spring of 2020, when the economy was still deep in the throes of the  COVID-19-induced  recession.

Pipeline sabotage: "NATO said that a  series of leaks on the Nord Stream pipelines  between Russia and Europe were the result of sabotage and that attacks on its members’ infrastructure would be met with a collective response from the military alliance.

The statement, from the North Atlantic Council, the decision-making body of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, didn’t provide details or evidence. It also noted that the damage to the pipelines occurred in international waters. But it marks the first time the alliance has formally warned that it would deter and defend against attacks on its members’ critical infrastructure following the now  four documented leaks in the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines ."

What have we learned?

Ron DeSantis has garnered a large standing within the GOP for standing up to the radical left. Right now he is being put to another test. This one involves his effective response to what may just be the most serious crisis to hit the state of Florida. We should all wish him well in that endeavour. It is also a test for the most divisive president ever. Failing to help could make Biden look petty toward his potential rival and he would be certain to drive Florida even further to the loving arms of the GOP.  As is, the president talked to mayors before he finally called the Governor.

Democrats have had complete control of the federal government for a good part of two years. It's time for a little assessment: At the top of the list is the economy. It is collapsing. We are in a recession. Crime is rising across the country and our schools are failing. Our people are being poisoned by Fentanyl, which is coming into the country along with a surge of illegal migrants over the southern border. With the midterm elections only weeks away, the democrats and their allies in the media have chosen to focus on two priorities: 1) indicting Donald Trump or at least keeping his name in the news and 2) making abortion an issue. The end result seems to be an awakening throughout the country.

Here on our favorite social platform we witnessed the terrible smearing of Giorgia Meloni. Words such as Fascist were used repeatedly to describe her, which of course is untrue, but it shows how far the left has gone in character assassination. Anyone who is Conservative now gets called such names here, not members of course, but public figures. When they do such things, people who should know better call it free speech and when I call the left out for being the cause of all that has harmed the nation in the past 10 years, I get to hear a lecture from, again, those who should know better. Yesterday we were subjected to an op-ed, which I consider unworthy of our front page. It claimed to measure how racist MAGA Republicans are. Not only did it smear millions of Americans, but one of it's proponents proclaimed that America has a terrible past which guides our present. Nothing could be further from the truth. America today is the most generous decent country in the history of mankind. To add insult to injury, those who should know better, got engaged in the conversation and at least one defended the seeded article.

Bill Clinton:

So NATO is planning on declaring war on the US? That should be fun to see a bunch of countries that aren't able to defend themselves figure out how to retaliate against the country that protects them. I think a sternly worded letter is warranted sent directly to Brandon's desk.

Haven't heard the Biden administration deny anything; or even voice concern over what is a real act of terrorism. No threats or warnings about attacking NATO countries; no offering help to contain the spill or close the breach; just flat out nothing. Crickets are chirping louder than Brandon; who can't seem to shut up these days.

The US is hinting really strongly that Russia sabotaged it's own pipelines. Putin is nuts; but not that damn nuts! He gains nothing from sabotaging his own pipelines. He doesn't need an excuse to expand the war. The shear amount of weapons, training, and money we have thrown at Ukraine is grounds enough. If he really is concerned with Russian security that is.

This is selective outrage at it's finest.

If this had happened under a Republican president Democrats would already be screaming about impeachment. Environmental wackjobs from all over the planet would be holding protests and vigils.

Once again your weekly newsletter is self-parody.

One of the interesting things about that other article that you are whining about is that many of the comments by "conservatives" on that seed just re-inforced the point being made in the seeded article itself. White grievance abounded.

Complaints not withstanding, there is very little doubt that much of MAGA is racist. There are many millions of racists in America on the whole, and it is very safe to assume that the percentage is even higher among MAGA.

Here's some thoughts on something that happened this week

"Former President Donald Trump ’s endorsement doesn’t have the same punch as it used to. On Thursday, Stephen Colbert pointed to one MAGA candidate who is struggling:  Doug Mastriano .

Mastriano, the Trump-backed Republican nominee for governor in Pennsylvania, is   down by 10 points   in the FiveThirtyEight average, and “The Late Show” host broke the candidate’s problem down to just two words.

“He suuuuuucks!” Colbert said, stretching out that second word as the audience cheered.

“Among the ways that he sucks, he   attended the Jan. 6 riot , has a long-standing   association with Christian nationalist   ideas, proposed   charging women   who violate an abortion ban with murder, is   connected to a social media site   run by a notorious anti-Semite and was photographed   wearing a Confederate uniform .”

“Because historically, nothing projects winner like a Confederate soldier in Pennsylvania,” Colbert added.

Mastriano’s tanking popularity also led to an embarrassing moment this week when he held a rally and   almost nobody came.

The shrinking economy:

In addition to the shrinking economy and the recession that is here (all depends on your partisan outlook however as we have seen Biden and the Democrats reject the standard definition for the "official" definition that won't come out for another year or two, but had Republicans been in power then of course the Democrats would have turned the news into a weapon for the mid-terms.  That's politics),  we also get news that inflation ran higher than projected for August.

The Federal Reserve's  preferred inflation gauge  accelerated again in August, keeping prices elevated near a four-decade high, according to new data released on Friday,

The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index showed that core prices, which strip out the more volatile measurements of food and energy, climbed 0.6% from the previous month and rose 4.9% on an annual basis, according to the Commerce Department.

Those figures are both higher than the 0.5% monthly increase and 4.7% annual increase forecast by Refinitiv economists, indicating that inflationary pressures are broadening throughout the economy. The reading is also up from July's annual increase of 4.7%.

The more encompassing headline figure rose 6.2% on an annual basis after prices rose 0.3% from the previous month, compared with a 0.1% decline in July. That increase came despite a sharp decline in gas prices.

So the economy continues to get worse each passing month.  You don't need to be Carnac the Magnificent to predict how this will impact the November elections.  There is just not enough time for this to turn around.

I wonder if they even begin to realize how the lies they are telling, the manipulations they are doing are going to effect them, that the people are finally wising up to the bullshite spewed everyday by the insane crazies...

Even the excusers that normally make sense are getting so far out there to be unbelievable...

Biden is a disaster for the democrats, but he is showing this to the full nation as the nation is crumbling before our eyes...

They have used the almost 100% legislative power they have to put thru most of their liberal anti-american agenda... (something that frustrated them in Obama's first term when he was in the same situation and they couldn't get it done back then... but then the Republicans had such power as well and failed to make use of it in their misguided attempt to rescind Obamacare...

Doesn't matter how they got the power they have been using it and ignoring pretty much what the majority of citizens desire in favor of their interests and agendas...

Time to teach them a lesson...

Election red flag: Biden tapping tax dollars to boost Democrat registration and turnout, watchdogs warn.

pGUKrVns?format=jpg&name=small

"With midterm elections just around the corner, congressional Republicans and election watchdogs are sounding alarms that the Biden administration and left-leaning nonprofits may be tapping taxpayer dollars and tax-exempt funds, respectively, to boost voter registration and turnout among Democratic constituencies under the guise of protecting "democracy."

Reasoning:  Conspiracy Theories, Propaganda, Numerous Failed Fact Checks

Right wingers love conspiracy theories. Very few of them completely reject conspiracy theories. I have a brother that is a Republican . He is intelligent, very successful financially, and a good father and grandfather and friend.

But he believes in conspiracy theories such as those related to Jan 6.  It is impossible to talk to people like this.

John Solomon , as is well known, lost his position as a straight reporter at The Hill because the rest of the staff thought his flights of fancy in his reporting was damaging the brand and they complained to management about him.

Everything he says must be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Solomon worked with Rudy Giuliani in Rudy's Ukraine adventures. Enough said.

Not exactly unbiased themselves.

Not changing goalposts because I acknowledged your sources, however, Solomon has been far more correct in his reporting than not......probably even more so than sources such as CNN.

Hell, some foolishly STILL believe it!

But you gotta admit, it is kind of nice that so many Democrats are simply ignoring the fact that Trump isn't on a ballot this year. Maybe they can fool some on the margins who simply don't know better, but most voters are smart enough to know that if Democrats are running against Trump in the midterms, they have already lost!

Slight to moderate, and both the arrow and their description point more toward moderate.  Factually, they're a much more credible source than the one you used.

  • Overall, we rate the New York Times Left-Center biased based on wording and story selection that moderately favors the left. They are considered one of the most reliable sources for news information due to proper sourcing and well-respected journalists/editors. The failed fact checks were on Op-Eds and not straight news reporting.

There's a funny thing about languages, bugsy - there's generally more than one way to say the same thing.  I believe the concept of "synonyms" is introduced fairly early in most schools, at the elementary level.  If you think someone is correct, you agree with him.  Those are synonymous statements.

The point I made, to most here, was that the New York Times, as well as just about any source can be questioned based on past history. The example you are setting is that stories can be rejected based on the source. If we all adopt that policy, none of the links will mean anything. If a story is false it needs to be disproven.
