Sabotage!
President Joe Biden’s campaign had made the muting of microphones, except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak, a condition of his decision to accept any debates this year. Some aides have said they now regret that decision, saying voters were shielded from hearing Trump’s outbursts during the June debate. A disastrous performance for the incumbent Democrat fueled his exit from the campaign.

Link to quote: Harris accepts rules for Sept. 10 debate with Trump on ABC, including microphone muting | AP News

Tonight is the one and only debate between former President Trump and VP Kamala Harris. It will be a record setting 7th debate for any President for Donald Trump and very likely his last Presidential debate. For Harris it is a must win since all of the media's labors failed to put any distance between her and Trump. As a matter of fact, not only is the honeymoon over, but her slide has begun. ( A recent Times/Sienna Poll now has Trump with a slight lead over Harris nationally.) I have to assume that ABC is going to go beyond the reasonable even-handed debate that CNN allowed Trump-Biden. IMO ABC will try to destroy the Trump candidacy once and for all tonight.

Harris has been preparing non-stop for the debate for the better part of a week. Donald Trump has not prepared at all. He is depending on his insticts for the forgotten American middle class to carry him through.

The 90-minute debate is hosted by ABC News at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center. The debate starts at 9 p.m. EST.

The rules (once demanded by president Biden):

Candidates will stand at a podium, muting microphones throughout the debate except for when it’s the candidate’s turn to speak and excluding props or pre-written notes on stage. The candidates will have a pen, pad of paper and a bottle of water. During the commercial breaks, the candidates will not be able to communicate with their campaign staff. standing at a podium, muting microphones throughout the debate except for when it’s the candidate’s turn to speak and excluding props or pre-written notes on stage. debate will have two commercial breaks and no live audience.

There will be no opening statements and each candidate will be allotted two minutes to answer each question and a two-minute rebuttal. The candidates will also be given an additional minute for a follow-up, clarification or response. At the end of the debate, each candidate will have two minutes for a closing statement.

David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate the debate. Muir is the anchor and managing editor of ABC News’ “World News Tonight.” Davis anchors “ABC News Live Prime.”

In the New York Times morning newsletter, the Times laid out the questions that ABC should ask former President Trump:

The economy

1. The signature legislation of your presidency was a tax cut that disproportionately helped the wealthy. Now you want to make this legislation permanent — and expand it. How will a tax cut geared toward the rich help most American families?

2. The federal debt is already large, and your tax cut would expand it. Do you have any plans to reduce the debt?

3. You have sent mixed signals about whether you will again try to repeal Obamacare. Will you? And when will you release your own health care plan, as you’ve long promised?

4. You have proposed a big tariff on goods coming into this country. Many business executives and economists say it will raise consumer prices. Why do you think they’re wrong?

5. You have signaled that you want to end the Federal Reserve’s independence and help set interest rates yourself. When other countries have politicized their central banks, inflation has tended to rise. Why do you favor this idea?

6. You promised to pass an infrastructure bill as president but didn’t. President Biden did — along with bipartisan laws on veterans’ health, manufacturing and more. Why has he been a  more bipartisan president  than you were?

Other domestic issues

7. You’ve said that you are proud of the demise of Roe v. Wade and that states should decide abortion policy. Will you promise to veto any congressional bill that imposes new restrictions on states?

8. Many abortions occur through prescription medications. Five months ago, you said you would announce a policy on medication abortion, but you haven’t. Will you take executive actions to restrict its availability?

9. You promised to build a border wall — a policy that many voters support — but you completed only modest sections of it. Why should voters believe you will succeed in a second term?

10. You have called for the mass deportation of illegal immigrants. Whom exactly would you deport — everybody who’s in this country illegally, including children and people who’ve been here for years, or only some groups? And how would you identify and apprehend people?

11. Extreme heat, severe storms and flooding have all become more common. Yet you’ve called climate change “not our problem.” Are you worried about the world you’re leaving to your grandchildren?

Foreign policy

12. You’ve suggested that Vladimir Putin should have a freer hand to do what he wants in Europe. Would you try to withdraw the U.S. from NATO?

13. You have criticized U.S. military aid to Ukraine and pledged to end the war there in a single day. Isn’t this effectively calling for Ukraine to surrender and accept a peace deal favorable to Putin?

14. You have promised to bring home the hostages in Gaza. How would you persuade or force Hamas to release them all?

15. Middle East policy during your presidency often followed the wishes of Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister. His unwillingness to compromise on big questions appears to be an obstacle to peace. Do you disagree with him on anything?

16. If Iran appeared to be building a nuclear weapon, would you order a military attack?

17. You were tougher on China than your predecessors. But you also recently abandoned your opposition to China’s ownership of TikTok, evidently after being lobbied by a Republican donor. Are you willing to stand up to China even if it costs your allies money?

Trump himself

18. You tried to overturn the 2020 election result after Biden beat you. Do you believe in American democracy?

19. On Jan. 6, 2021, rioters attacked police officers at the Capitol. You’ve praised those rioters, raised money for them, pledged to pardon them and met with their relatives. Do you understand why this angers officers who were injured in the attack and the families of those who died afterward?

20. A jury found that you had sexually abused E. Jean Carroll. Another jury convicted you for falsifying records to cover up an affair. And you have  a long record of demeaning women . Do you regret any of this behavior?

21. You used your power as president to enrich yourself and your family, including by holding events at your properties. Will you do so again?

22. The governments of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the U.A.E. have invested billions of dollars with a fund run by Jared Kushner, your son-in-law, even though he has little relevant investment experience. Do you think they’re trying to curry favor with you through him?

23. Four years from now, you would be 82. In public appearances, you sometimes give incoherent answers,  including a recent one about child care . Will you release your complete medical records?

24. Multiple people who watched you up close as president — including your vice president and a chief of staff — say that you’re  unfit to be president . Why do so many of your own appointees feel this way?

The Morning Newsletter - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

With that, Donald Trump should be on the defensive all night long.

In the news:

Israel struck inside a humanitarian area in the southern Gaza Strip, saying its target was a military command center. An unknown Gaza official told the msm that 40 civilians were killed.

Justice Elena Kagan said Americans were right to worry about the Supreme Court soon limiting contraceptive access and same-sex marriage.

A small town in Ohio has been overrun with 20,000 Haitian migrants.

Ukrainian civilians increasingly support negotiations with Moscow to end the war, but soldiers are skeptical about a deal according to the WSJ.

The U.S. Department of Justice said an illegal immigrant has reached an agreement to plead guilty to charges related to stealing a U.S. citizen's identity to  vote in multiple elections  and fraudulently obtain an American passport.

This is where the 538 polling aggregate is this morning. We can come back in a week and compare to see what effect, if any, the debate has on polling.

The poll, from  The New York Times and Siena College , has Trump at 48 percent to 47 percent for Harris among likely voters, within the poll’s margin of error. The results are similar to a survey from the pair from July, right after President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid.

The poll comes ahead of Harris and Trump’s ABC News debate on Tuesday night, the only scheduled debate so far between the two candidates. And that debate could be even more crucial for the vice president: According to the poll, 28 percent of likely voters said they feel like they need to learn more about Harris, compared to 9 percent who said they need to know more about Trump.

Additionally, 47 percent of likely voters viewed Harris as too liberal, while 32 percent of likely voters saw Trump as too conservative.

The NYT/Siena survey is one of the few high-quality, national polls that did not show the vice president receiving at least a small bump following her quickly capturing the nomination and her coronation at the party’s nominating convention last month in Chicago.

All the polling data, whether it comes from 538, RCP or anyone else all dictates a statistical tie. You can listen to any number of talking heads parsing data you want to confirm whatever bias you have, but the numbers remain the same...

Harris is polling slightly ahead of Trump, but still within the margin of error. Nothing more, nothing less.

I do expect Harris to bring up Trump's convictions at least once, but that would be a true fact though. Not something made up like a QAnon fever dream of Venezuelan drug gangs Trump likes to bring up at rallies.

Isn't that what sunk Biden?  IMO Harris will use attacks on Trump to deflect attention away from questions she doesn't want to or can't answer.  But Harris will have to stand up and defend Biden's record since that's the only thing she has to run on.  The debate will end Kamala Harris attempting to portray herself as an outsider on the inside.  Harris does hold the legislative record as the VP who cast the most tie breaking votes in the history of the United States.

IMO Trump will work to tie Harris to Biden's record and will attack with contrasts between his and Biden's record.  Actually Trump has the easiest task, all he has to do is stand there and let everyone else talk.  The polling shows everyone knows Trump so there's really little need for Trump to say much at all.  Trump effectively used the dead mic and split screen during the Biden debate.  (BTW, that's the same strategy Trump used in debating Hillary Clinton.  Remember way back when?)

If Harris attempts to use attacks to hide weaknesses in her argument then she'll end up a loser.  That might persuade a jury but there won't be a debate audience and Harris would be throwing punches in the dark.  If Muir and Davis get caught up in fact-checking or prosecuting Trump then voters will simply blow off the debate as a political hit job.  The only way Trump loses is by rambling too much; he is the old guy on the stage now.

Maybe.  That's certainly within the realm of possibility.  The impression I got was that Biden had prepared to debate a Trump that didn't show up.  Trump essentially stood back and let Biden whup himself.  (Bit of ironic karma in that.)

Yes. I'm hoping Trump learned from the debate you haven't mentioned. The one moderated by Chris Wallace.

That debate didn't help Chris Wallace, either.  Debate moderators have been gun shy about being suckered into the debate since that infamous night.  ABC (and Disney) have a lot at stake with the debate, too.  Guess we'll find out how disciplined Muir and Davis are.

I think he loses by trying to answer pointed questions.

Maybe.  I still think Trump loses by looking like the old guy on the stage.  Answering pointed questions won't do much damage since it's all stale old news.  But trying to fill 2 minutes with rambling riffs will only make Trump the old guy.   Just remember, Trump doesn't need to win the debate; Trump only needs to avoid screwing himself.

Yeah, I agree.  Trump's answers to all the pointed questions are already in the can.  No need to rehash stale news.  Trump won't change anyone's mind about those issues at this point.  It's old news, already answered, move on.

Kamala Harris needs to be duct taped to Biden's record; she was in the room after all.  Trump rehashing canned answers to stale questions won't do that.  Trump answering Harris' attacks with silence would do more to rattle Harris than anything else Trump could do.  Trump silence would force Harris to talk about her record and her agenda.  And that's the glue that binds Harris to Biden.

The one exchange I would like to see would be questions about Trump being fit to hold office.  The answer to that pointed question should be that Trump has won primaries; Trump is on the stage because voters wanted him there.  Why is Harris fit for office?  Why is Harris on the debate stage?

There are those who now say the Biden debate was a stress test, orchestrated by democrats.

Sometimes I almost wish that were true and there were some secret Democrat "deep state" "orchestrating" things behind the scenes, that way we wouldn't have to suffer the fools like Trump and his mind-numbingly stupid sycophants and self-righteous conservative Christian pricks trying to assert themselves as our religious overlords and proclaiming themselves the only "true" Americans. If there was a secret cabal running things they would be far more competent and not stick their feet in their mouths as often as the Democrats have. I think Democrats are more competent than Republicans but sadly not by much which is why what should be a landslide victory over a convicted felon and just disgusting vile sexual predator narcissist like Trump is still such a close race.

I'm hoping Trump learned from the debate you haven't mentioned. The one moderated by Chris Wallace.

Trump is impervious to learning new things, he believes everything he does is a fucking miracle, and he has a bunch of bootlicking sycophants confirming his bias at every step so there's no way he'll change anything, he'll just double down like he always does. And his low IQ fans and supporters will just eat it up. He could literally piss in their faces and tell them it's raining lemonade, and they're gleefully gulp it down and tell everyone it's the best tasting lemonade they've ever had.

I think he loses by trying to answer pointed questions.

That's because he doesn't have a single cogent answer, he only has rhetoric and lies to shovel but that won't matter to his sycophants, and it just make his opponents shake their heads in wonder at how his base sticks to him no matter what nonsense comes out of his mouth.

D emocrats are privately acknowledging growing anxiety over the Tuesday night debate between Vice President Harris and former President Trump, arguing that how Harris performs could go a long way in defining her as a candidate.

Four years ago, Harris enjoyed a good night against former Vice President Mike Pence, and that debate might be best remembered for the fly that landed on Pence’s head.

Harris’s public appearances have been tightly scripted since President Biden exited the race and handed her the baton, and a long evening behind the debate podium with only a pad of paper, a pen and a bottle of water presents an array of uncertainties that makes Democrats nervous.

I'm not interested in the viewpoints of the NT members with their for or against crap, and I don't trust most polls since they're too easy to manipulate, so I guess the answer will not be obvious until the votes are counted in November.

"“The truth matters. Lies have consequences,” Dominion lawyer Justin Nelson told reporters outside a Delaware courthouse after Superior Court Judge Eric Davis announced the deal.

Outside of the $787.5 million promised to Colorado-based Dominion, it was unclear what other consequences Fox would face. Fox acknowledged in a statement “the court’s rulings finding certain claims about Dominion to be false ,”.

Fox, Dominion reach $787.5M settlement over false election claims | AP News

The lawsuit wasn't specifically about bias, though if you believe Fox isn't biased then clearly [ ] or you don't know what the definition of "bias" is. The suit just proved that Fox lies to its viewers which most Americans with more than half a brain have known for years.

You think Trump is going to get a fair deal tonight?

I think he's been given far more "fair deals" when he's interviewed than he deserves and rarely gets called out on his reckless and feckless behavior and rambling nonsensical answers that would get him laughed out of even a high school debate club. Even so, he'll have overwhelming undeserved sympathy from his mindless sycophants claiming he was "sabotaged" or treated unfairly no matter how the debate turns out because there's nothing that right-wing conservative Christians love more than playing the eternal victim.

Bernie Sanders told the truth about Kamala Harris trying to fool voters. Believe him.

Harris understands she can't win with her past far-left positions

Sanders is right, of course. Harris' pattern of flip-flopping on policies − like favoring a ban on fracking for oil and gas before opposing it now, or   supporting mandatory gun buybacks   in 2019 but opposing them now − isn't about her growth as a leader or the evolution of her thinking

There may be enough Freedom Caucus members against a continuing resolution to sink it before it hits the Senate. Massy said he's not voting for it already. Even Biggs in the appropriations committee said he'll try to tack on amendments before he votes yes.

There are two questions that must be asked of Trump

1.." Who WON the 2020 election.? "    Not who is the president, who won.

2.. "When Jake Tapper asked you in the June debate to say what you were doing for three hours on the afternoon of Jan 6th, you tried to change the subject to Nancy Pelosi, and the border.  No more stalling, what were you doing on the afternoon of Jan 6th? "

You are making the rather pathetic argument that since Trump didnt succeed its all good and lets have him back for four more years.  The issue with Trump is not whether he succeeded, it is his blatant dereliction of duty. He knew the US Capitol was under assault, inuurrection or riot, and did nothing to stop it.  It disqualifies him from ever holding office again.

Trump knows this of course. Why do you think has totally refused to answer the question?  Back in the spring Kristen Welker of NBC asked him what he was doing while the riot was going on and he said "I'm not going to tell you that".

Especially when it is America First vs Marxism.  Those are fairly high stakes.

Maybe because the Dem candidate is too busy pretending she isn't an incumbent and has tried to distance herself from the policies she and her boss instituted

I dont think it is Mark Milleys fault there was no world war going on while he served.

CLAIM: Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark   A.   Milley has never served in combat or won a war.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False.   Milley , the highest-ranking military officer in the U.S., has   extensive combat experience , including tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is authorized to wear the Combat Infantryman Badge, meaning he has   actively participated   in ground combat.

THE FACTS: A photo of Milley is spreading widely on social media, along with claims questioning his military credentials. The image, which does not identify Milley by name, shows the senior officer in his full dress uniform   on the floor of the House of Representatives   prior to the 2022 State of the Union .

“Can someone explain to me how a man who never served in combat and never won a war has THIS many medals on his uniform?” reads   a block of text   above the   photo , which was taken by   Evelyn Hockstein , a Reuters photojournalist.

The image and its accompanying   text   were shared widely on Instagram and Twitter, receiving tens of thousands of likes and shares.

But Milley has extensive   combat   experience . For example, he was deployed as part of   Operation Iraqi Freedom , which began with the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and   Operation Enduring Freedom   in Afghanistan, a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Milley’s other deployments include assignments in Egypt, Panama, Haiti and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Milley became a one-star general, also known as a brigadier general,   in 2008 . Since then, two of the most significant conflicts   in which the U.S. has been engaged , the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, concluded with U.S. withdrawal. However, during his   more than   40-year military career, Milley has also been involved with operations that have been seen as U.S. successes. For example, he was part of   Operation Just Cause , which restored the democratically-elected government of Panama to power, and   Operation Uphold Democracy , which brought back democratic rule in Haiti.

Among Milley’s myriad   awards and insignia   is the   Combat Infantryman Badge   with one star, meaning he has won the award twice.   It can be seen on Milley’s jacket in the misleading posts.   There are three basic eligibility requirements for receiving this   badge , which is awarded to soldiers ranked as a colonel or below. According to the   Code of Federal Regulations , a soldier “must be an infantryman satisfactorily performing infantry duties,” “must be assigned to an infantry unit during such time as the unit is engaged in active ground combat” and “must actively participate in such ground combat.”

When I was in the food service industry not that long ago, I knew a few customers who obviously felt that way.

The way they made a nasty fucking mess and would just leave it for the lowly peasant minimum wage earner.  These were usually obviously people with some money and who never tipped and went out of their way to be assholes.

I worked my way thru college working fast food, waiting tables, and tending bar. Waiting tables was probably the hardest. The worse people would come in at least 2X a month, make a nasty mess, order a single plate salad, but kept going back to the salad bar, and never left a tip.

I remember this one lady and her friends who would bring their kids and the kids would all run wild and they would take up/make up three tables - rearrange all the tables and chairs - make a goddamned unreal mess -  like they tell the kids to make as much mess as possible - and forget how to use a trash can - and leave all their trash on the table and all over the floor and leave the chairs and tables that they rearranged not bothering to put back in place.  A godawful mess that I was left to clean up.  I just knew they had nannies and housekeepers at home and never lifted a damned finger to do anything.

Kamala Harris and this columnist have little in common. But we do share one thing: We both had summer jobs at McDonald’s in college.

Sounds like somebody needs to back up and tell everybody sorry for lying about VP Harris's job resume and her character

McDonald's has not made any statement about whether Harris worked at the restaunt.

McDonalds, it seems, hasn't confirmed nor denied she worked there.

But there is no evidence McDonald's has weighed in on the credibility of Harris' statement. There are no credible news reports about the restaurant chain making a statement about Harris, and nothing resembling the statement appears on the chain's  social   media   accounts  or  web site . Fournier offered no evidence for his claim on X and didn't respond to a request for comment.

Doesn't mean she did...........or didn't of course.

  • Harris’ campaign told PolitiFact that Harris worked the cash register and staffed the fry and ice cream machines at a McDonald’s in Alameda, California, in summer 1983.

Harris cant prove she worked at a local McDonalds for a summer 41 years ago..    Hang her !

This is so stupid.

Trump has claimed that he was number one in his class in the business school at University of Pennsylvania.  One of his professors has said that Trump was one of the dumbest students he ever had.

Why right wingers want to discuss "character" issues when Trump is their candidate is a real head scratcher.

In 2011 Occupation Wall Street was going on, and smaller protests like that developed in other cities.

I was walking down the street in downtown Chicago when I saw some of these "Occupy Wall St." protesters on a corner, so I stopped for a minute to see what was going on. Suddenly these pieces of paper started floating down from above. It happened to be that this protest was beneath the Board Of Trade building in Chicago (which is kind of like the Chicago version of Wall St.)  The papers were being thrown out of the window of an office on the 14th or 15th floor, and it was traders dumping McDonalds job applications on the protesters.

Let us be real. This ‘debate’ will not change a thing. The comments tomorrow will only confirm that fact…the fact that the lines have been drawn and the choice for those willing to cast a vote for either candidate is clear.

November 5th is all that matters, with the down ballot votes deciding the tenor of the next four years. Will trump become the lamest of lame ducks with an emasculated Congress bending to his retribution platform or will Harris be the next president to simply survive the worst state of devious, divisive, and dangerous times we have faced in our lifetimes?

The former poses an existential threat while the latter, at the very least, gives us a glimmer of hope in moving forward instead of limping back.

Republicans against Trump

@RpsAgainstTrump ·

Q. Would you have certified the 2020 election? JD Vance: No. “I would have asked the states to submit alternative slates of electors and ask the country to have a debate”

@Liz_Cheney

Let’s be clear: This is illegal and unconstitutional. The American people had voted. The courts had ruled. The Electoral College had met and voted. The Governor in every state had certified the results and sent a legal slate of electors to the Congress to be counted. The Vice President has no constitutional authority to tell states to submit alternative slates of electors because his candidate lost. That is tyranny. Our institutions held on Jan 6 because Mike Pence refused to violate his oath to the Constitution. Trump picked JD Vance because Vance will do whatever Trump wants, including violating the Constitution. They are both far too dangerous to serve. It’s our duty to stop them.
