An unmemorable Superbowl

An unmemorable Superbowl
“They played better than us from start to finish,” Mahomes said. "We didn't start how we wanted to. The turnovers hurt. I take all the blame for that. Those turnovers swing the moment of the game and they capitalized on them. They scored on one and got a touchdown immediately after another. That's 14 points I gave them. It's hard to come back from that in the Super Bowl.

For those who watched it yesterday, the Superbowl showcased a very well prepared & motivated Philadelphia Eagle defense. Unfortunately, it made for a very uncompetitive game which found KC quarterback Patrick Mahomes sacked 6 times.   The Chiefs managed just one first down over the first 30 minutes and they ended the first half down 24-0. They never really recovered. I didn't bother watching the final quarter.

The hype for the games was ridiculous. I think Fox began pregame coverage in the early afternoon. The Kendrick Lamar half time show was sickening, and it was briefly interrupted by a performer unfurling a flag symbolizing both Sudan and the Gaza Strip, which was quickly removed by security. As for the much-anticipated Superbowl commercials, many were political, or senseless, and sometimes outright racist. Tom Brady had two commercials. One was for Duracell and the other was a "stand against hate." You get the idea.

GjYerZ7XIAAKi4N?format=jpg&name=small

Last but not least was the first President to attend a Superbowl game: Donald Trump. He was cheered by the crowd when his image was shown. On the other hand, Taylor Swift received boos. One final note : the winning Philadelphia Eagles were not invited to the White House, since the last time they were invited, some declined the invitation to support the Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the playing of the National Anthem. Trump has now sent a clear message: It is not about who accepts the invitation, it is more importantly about who is worthy of being invited.

In the news:

President Trump announced a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, to start today.

President Trump also ordered the Treasury secretary to stop minting pennies. It cost more to mint them than they are worth.

A Trump executive order declared South Africa’s white Afrikaners victims of racial injustice. The order offered Afrikaners refugee status and halted aid to South Africa.

Israel’s military withdrew from a corridor dividing Gaza as required by the deal made with Hamas.

In central India, government forces killed dozens of Maoist guerillas.

A Georgia man was sentenced to 475 years in prison for dogfighting and animal cruelty after authorities found 107 dogs, many injured and starving in his yard.

Good morning.

Afederal judge on Saturday blocked Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency from accessing Treasury Department payment records for at least one week.

According to Manhattan-based U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer's  order , access would be limited to "civil servants with a need for access to perform their job duties within the Bureau of Fiscal Services who have passed all background checks and security clearances and taken all information security training called for in federal statutes and Treasury Department regulations."

Engelmayer, a judge appointed by former President Obama, issued the order after an emergency request from 19 Democratic state attorneys general who argued that their residents were at risk if DOGE had access to the records.

The order is in effect for at least one week. A hearing in the case is scheduled for February 14.

Just have Trumps treasury secretary hire them as contractors for a dollar, the judge then would have to block all contractors or allow them access.

Not so much the waste being found is what the left is afraid of, it is who that waste is going to is what is spooking them.

A lot of money being funneled from these "aid organizations" back to democrat coffers.

When I asked if anyone at Treasury had a rough guess for what percentage of that number is unequivocal and obvious fraud, the consensus in the room was about half, so $50B/year or $1B/week!!

This is utterly insane and must be addressed immediately."

I had to watch Fox to see the game but I used a computer to listen to Philly AM radio broadcast of the game.

I've had more than enough of another ex quarterback "GOAT" embarrass himself on national TV (again)

by telling us stories of his super bowl victories or that there was only 5 minutes left in the game

when it was 5:21 to go in the third.  He also declared that Mahomes had caught Philly in a blitz during one of Mahomes' touchdown passes - there was no blitz.

I'd much rather hear accents like mine and have grown men cry for joy over a revenge game that became a total ass whooping and masterclass in how to defend the whole field.

The Chiefs entire game plan seemed to be to stop Barkley and for the most part they did that, but Hurts and his receivers did more than just enough while the defense scored and took the ball away from Mahomes three times turning each into points.

Classic.

Can't wait to watch it tonight without the commercials and half time nonsense, limited commentary, on the NFLnetwork.

None of the people who scored touchdowns for the Eagles in the game the other night were on the team  seven years ago. You can clearly see their train of logic on this one. I mean, kneeling is traditionally super disrespectful. I mean, we all know that's why men do it when they propose to a woman because they're trying to express their absolute disdain and disrespect for the woman they are proposing to. And who can forget how kneeling is used in most religions, I mean it's clearly the utmost disrespect to come in and kneel and pray in a church, I mean it's almost like slapping God in the face, right?... /s

So, is "not showing pride" the same as "intended as an act of disrespect"? Does not feeling proud about something mean you are showing it disrespect?

Why do you think you can speak for Kaepernick?

Here are his own words "The sole purpose of kneeling during the national anthem is not to disrespect the military personnel at all".

Basically, according to some worthless bigots, if you aren't proud of some of the things your country has done then you're disrespecting your nation. I guess these same folk are the only ones who still claim pride in their confederate heritage and feel proud of the millions of slaves their ancestors owned, used and abused and are proud of segregation and Jim Crow laws. Nope. I do struggle trying to communicate with some people simply because it's hard to explain things in terms simple enough for them to understand. I think it's fairly obvious to most persons with more than half a brain that kneeling is most often a sign of respect and bowing the head in deference is showing submission, either to a God or a girlfriend or even a country. Just because some moronic useless pieces of bigoted shit have, in their own tiny minds, decided it was disrespectful doesn't make it so. They can and should go fuck themselves, it would be a much more productive use of their time.

Yes. Because to show respect for the flag and country you stand for the anthem if able.  Are you not aware of this? That's the point.

How stupid would you have to be to not understand that Kaepernick's  acts of sitting or kneeling during the anthem were  intended to be disrespectful.  I think Kaepernick is a fool and I least give him credit for understanding that.

It's not a strawman by any stretch. Kaepernick knelt during the anthem in protest of how black Americans have been mistreated for centuries. And even after all the progress we've made towards equality, there is still a glaring disparity between how white and black Americans are handled by police and treated in our criminal justice system which was specifically what Kaepernick was wanting to bring a light to. Of course, that's why he received so much hate. Not because anyone actually thinks he disrespected his country but because those disgusting bigots who see black people as inferior hate it when a light gets shone on their racist underbelly. They're just using the claim of 'disrespect' to hide their seething bigotry and hate for a black man who dares defy them.

Why do you think you can speak for Kaepernick?

I don't have to.  But there are people like Trump who hear what he says and ignore it for their own personal interpretations of his action.

Kaepernick has said on numerous occasions that the sole purpose of kneeling during the national anthem is not to disrespect the military personnel at all, but rather that his goal is to use his social platform to bring topics regarding police brutality and oppression of people of color to light.

"I am not protesting the anthem or the nation, I'm protesting organized brutality. To me, this is much bigger than football and it would be selfish to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

Kaepernick knelt during the anthem in protest of how black Americans have been mistreated for centuries

So what? That he was protesting is not in dispute.  He chose to disrespect the anthem to draw attention to his protest.  do you seriously not understand that?

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks".

He chose to disrespect the anthem to draw attention to his protest.  do you seriously not understand that?

I understand that's the argument being made by some though I disagree that there was anything disrespectful to our nation in his actions. Disrespectful to white nationalists and white supremacists everywhere? Yes, most certainly, his attempt to draw attention to the mistreatment of black Americans at their hands surely upset many of them. I'm sure they screamed in rage but then realized they couldn't just call him names like they do at home, online and on rightwing media they had to frame him as some crazy disrespectful black panther America hater when all he did was kneel in silence. Such a simple act and yet bigots across the US lost their fucking minds. It was almost like an impromptu exam to show whether you accept and understand that systemic racism still exists in our nation or if you're either so fucking sheltered or bigoted that you refuse to accept the facts and thus scream in rage at a football player who dared kneel in protest of the current status quo they benefit from.

So no, I do not think what he did was disrespectful. It was a heartfelt silent protest over a reality experienced by many. If people are getting bent out of shape because of his silent protest than clearly there is something wrong with them, not Kaepernick.

During a post-game interview, Kaepernick explained his action. “I am not going to get up to show pride in a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he said. “I am not protesting the anthem or the nation, I’m protesting organized brutality. So the quote was a hoax.

Quite a statement with zero evidence. Not that I'm surprised, it's all MAGA has these days.

The unnecessary furor began in August 2016 when the quarterback for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers was joined by one teammate to take a knee during the playing of the National Anthem before a game. Colin Kaepernick, whose name is now synonymous with either courage or treason, depending on your view of the divisive issue, has stated his aims clearly: “I am not protesting the anthem or the nation. I’m protesting organized brutality. To me, this is much bigger than football, and it would be selfish to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” I'm standing with the kneelers. Will you join me? – Baptist News Global

Links from 2020 and 2021  for a quote that he supposedly said in 2016. Thanks for proving my point.  All of these "sources" that I've never heard of use the same quote that doesn't exist in the original reporting of the interview.  It' so blatant:

Fake quote:  : "I am not protesting the anthem or the nation, I'm protesting organized brutality. To me, this is much bigger than football and it would be selfish to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Actual reported quote from the interview: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

You keep claiming it's a fake quote yet have provided ZERO evidence to support that claim. There are numerous sites who have used the quote which was apparently something he wrote so there is no recording of him saying those words that I could find. But to any rational person who isn't trying their hardest to reject reality and facts, when they say it was a statement he made, it doesn't matter whether it was in print or verbally, both are acceptable to be defined as him "making a statement".

Statement: noun - definite or clear expression of something in speech or writing.

has stated his aims clearly: “I am not protesting the anthem or the nation. I’m protesting organized brutality."

I do find it funny that some are soooo fucking desperate to undermine this black Americans protest intent and message. They must really be scared of black people standing up for themselves. I wonder what trauma those weak whiny white folk who are trying to mischaracterize Kaepernick's silent protest went through to make them like this. Did they get bullied by a black kid when they were in school? Or did some black kid steal their girlfriend when they were young, and they've just never forgiven them and have harbored some deep-seated prejudice ever since? Or was it just from the normal process of osmosis where they just absorbed the racial hate from their parents and peers who have been harboring those sentiments towards black people, especially in the south and Midwest, for centuries. We'll likely never know for sure, but what we do know is that the same bigots who like flying confederate flags, defend confederate monuments and seemingly have no problem welcoming wannabe Nazi's into their party like to bitch about Kaepernick's silent protest.

Personally, I'd much rather share a meal with Kaepernick than with any Trump ass eating MAGAite.

LAST month, British woman Sue Howarth and her husband Robert Lynn were woken at 2am by three men breaking into a window of their remote farm in Dullstroom, a small town in the northeast of South Africa, about 240km from the nearest capital city.

The couple, who had lived in the area for 20 years, were tied up, stabbed, and   tortured with a blowtorch for several hours . The masked men stuffed a plastic bag down Mrs Howarth’s throat, and attempted to strangle her husband with a bag around his neck.

The couple were bundled into their own truck, still in their pyjamas, and driven to a roadside where they were shot. Mrs Howarth, 64, a former pharmaceutical company executive, was shot twice in the head. Mr Lynn, 66, was shot in the neck.

That is horrible and sad. Also horrible and sad, the fact that black farmers are also being targeted and attacked by these criminals and, according to those not motivated by their racial prejudice, appear to have anything to do with race.

South African farm attacks   (Afrikaans:   plaasaanvalle ) are violent crimes, including murder, assault and robbery, that take place on farms in   South Africa. The attacks target both white and black farmers. The term has no formal legal definition, but such attacks have been the subject of discussion by media and public figures in South Africa and abroad.

Unsubstantiated claims that such attacks on farmers disproportionately target whites are a key element of the white genocide conspiracy theory   and have become a common talking point among white nationalists   worldwide. However, there are no reliable figures that suggest that white farmers are being targeted in particular or that they are at a disproportionate risk of being killed. The   Government of South Africa   and other analysts say that farm attacks are part of a broader crime problem in South Africa and do not have a racial motivation.

South African farm attacks - Wikipedia

And then of course there are the tens of thousands of black South Africans killed during apartheid, I'm sure you were just as angry and vocal then, right Vic? Did you link stories to their plight? Or is making sure the white nationalist conspiracy theory perspective gets shared your only concern?

Yeah, that seems like a bizarre criticism.

Well, you see Tacos, under Joe Biden we had rabid antisemitism at the universities. Some was inspired by professors and a lot came via Palestinians on student visas. We had to have university presidents step down because they wouldn't denounce antisemitism. They were reluctant to call in police when there was campus unrest.

Do you know what was done at Columbia University? Aside from building takeovers, concrete was poured into toilets. I assume those were cleaned up by working class plumbers.

Yet the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism doesn't want to upset the left, so we get a commercial denouncing hate of all kinds.

Fear not, because if Palestinian students get suspended now, they will lose their visas and be sent right back home per the President our friends loathe.

A few quick observations: I don’t think the president has anything to do with antisemitism at universities, so I don’t see why you need to bring Biden into it. Universities are not the only place one might find antisemitism. Antisemitism has existed for centuries.

Other than the sponsor’s name, I don’t remember universities or antisemitism being singled out in the ad. The ad seemed to cover all hate, not just antisemitism. In fact, focusing on just antisemitism seems to miss the point of the ad.

We had to have university presidents step down because they wouldn't denounce antisemitism.

University presidents are pressured to take a stand on lots of issues. I observe that it is one thing to ask a president - or anyone - to condemn antisemitism, or racism, or sexism, (or whatever) but people will not always agree when those things are present so that they may be condemned. I believe that sometimes, agitators or advocates are seeking condemnation of the person or speech they don’t like, and not that actual -ism itself.

They were reluctant to call in police when there was campus unrest.

I don’t know how much time you have spent on college campuses, but social and political demonstrations/protests/events are very nearly a daily occurrence on just about every campus. They involve every ideology or issue you can imagine, and more.

Because these campuses generally have a policy - and if they’re public, are required by law - to permit free speech, they typically don’t call the police unless they think it’s absolutely necessary. Opinions will naturally vary on when it is necessary.

I thought the ad was fine, as presented.
