White Crowds Fill the Pews for Trump’s Visit to Black Church

Donald Trump visited Detroit on Saturday, a city he once called a “living hell,” and staged a surprise “roundtable” at 180 Church, a predominately Black congregation on the city’s outskirts. While the event was ostensibly about issues facing Black voters, and some Black pro-Trump personalities like Peezy and Icewear Vezzo showed up, social media lit up at footage showing the pews packed with white crowds.
“It’s all lies, smoke, and mirrors,” Jeff Timmer, a senior adviser for the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, wrote on X. Axios reporter Sam Robinson said much of the “roundtable” featured Trump talking to the crowd, largely about opposing LGBTQ causes. Still, one participant praised him for visiting and said Barack Obama and Joe Biden “never came to the hood.”
The church’s pastor, Lorenzo Sewell, told Reuters he initially thought he was “being punked” when the Trump campaign reached out. “That began to move my heart because people that are disenfranchised, pushed aside, and marginalized typically don’t have a voice at the table,” he said.

I was in church yesterday - there were mean and women in fancy suits and dresses, there were a few folks in shorts (it was hot), there were some folks in their work clothes and there were folks with hats on (some fancy and a few ball caps). There were folks of a variety of colors and backgrounds, the only thing we are really had in common was that we were neighbors and we came to church.
And everyone was welcome, no one was out of place - there were democrats, there were republicans, there were undecided independents and there were folks that have little interest in politics. The crowd is different each Sunday because were have no set numbers for races, ethnicities, well-dressed vs casual.
All who show up are welcome and are in the right place.
Your comment presupposes that all those white people would have been there next Sunday for regular services. Sorry, thats not what this is.

How would you know? Detroit is a very integrated city. “Black” churches have many white members and “white” churches have plenty of black members.

My white parents attend a black church and have for about 20 years. I only bring this up because there are no other white people in that church and never have been since Presbytery banished their former white preacher to the black church for not catering enough to the biggest donors in the white church. My parents protested this injustice by following him to his new church, and even though that preacher is long since gone they have stayed there. Church is pretty much the most segregated institution in this country. White people in a black church in Detroit is fairy tale.
There is a church here in Chicago , St Sabinas, that is very well known locally because the pastor, Fr. Michael Pfleger , has been a social justice activist for 40 years.
Sometimes when clips from their services are in the news, you see a few white people in the overwhelmingly black congregation. These whites are usually people that have ties to the church going back decades and decades when there will still whites living in the neighborhood.
It’s probably an attractive church with some fancy architecture. There were a few other couples that joined with my parents in their exodus, but that lasted only a few weeks. I’d like to think that they just missed their fancy, lily white church fellowship, and not that they were succumbing to some racist urges.

I have attended black churches with friends on occasions and when it came to the time where the pastor asked for any guests to identify and introduce themselves every face in the congregation looked at me!
And, I am only, um, whitish...
I’ve never attended my parents church (for obvious reasons), but I have volunteered there to pack groceries for the poor. The neighborhood is pretty scary. There are some more diverse neighborhoods in the area, but not this one. White people are generally not comfortable there.
The Biden campaign has minority outreach, voter registration and get out the vote efforts up and running in every state. This while the Trump campus is lining the pockets of grifters and lawyers...
