Rush Limbaugh, a talk radio pioneer who saturated America’s airwaves with cruel bigotries, lies and conspiracy theories for over three decades, amassing a loyal audience of millions and transforming the Republican Party in the process, has died, his wife revealed at the beginning of his show on Wednesday. He was 70 years old.

Limbaugh announced in February 2020 that he had been diagnosed with advanced stage 4 lung cancer.

Former President Donald Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom during the 2020 State of the Union, calling Limbaugh “the greatest fighter and winner you will ever meet.”

Perhaps no moment better encapsulated Limbaugh’s legacy, nor demonstrated the immense influence he came to wield in Washington.

The medal was a just reward: Trump’s ascension to the presidency couldn’t have happened without Limbaugh’s brand of right-wing media.

The modern Republican party often functioned with Limbaugh as a fulcrum. President Barack Obama’s former chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, once called Limbaugh “the voice and intellectual force of the Republican Party.” Limbaugh would at times massage the failures of the party and its leaders, dismissing obvious policy or political failures as simply part of liberal conspiracies.

But he also helped set the agenda. When a Republican politician promoting racist and sexist policies could only use a dog whistle, Limbaugh provided a bull horn — he was, for example, an early progenitor of the racist birther conspiracy theory about Obama that Trump would later use to fuel his political career.

For decades, Limbaugh was associated with the far-right fringes of the Republican Party. In 1995, only days after Timothy McVeigh bombed a federal building in Oklahoma City, President Bill Clinton issued a blistering attack at a speech in Minneapolis in which he said the “nation’s airwaves ... spread hate, they leave the impression that, by their very words, that violence is acceptable. … It is time we all stood up and spoke against that kind of reckless speech and behavior.”

Limbaugh vehemently protested the characterization, assuming that it was about him — which in all likelihood it was. “Make no mistake about it: Liberals intend to use this tragedy for their own political gain,” he said on the radio afterward.

People did take up Clinton’s charge to speak against Limbaugh’s style of “reckless speech and behavior,” but without much success. While remaining a controversial figure and at times suffering advertising boycotts and derision from the mainstream media, less than 25 years, rather than be condemned by another American president, Limbaugh was given a medal.

Decades Of Hate

A full accounting of Limbaugh’s lies and exaggerations; his racism and his misogyny; his homophobia and his Islamophobia; and his sheer cruelty could fill books — and have — but even a cursory overview of his lowlights makes his prejudice clear.

In 2003, he was forced to resign from ESPN after stating that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was only receiving praise because the media was “very desirous that a Black quarterback do well.” In 2004, Limbaugh said the NBA should be renamed the T.B.A. —“the Thug Basketball Association.” He then added: “Stop calling them teams. Call ’em gangs.” He similarly whined that watching the NFL was like watching “a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons.”

Once, after arguing with a Black man who called into his show, he told the caller to “take that bone out of your nose and call me back.“ Another time, Limbaugh asked his audience, “Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?” while discussing the Black civil rights activist and politician. Limbaugh once ludicrously asserted that “if any race of people should not have guilt about slavery, it’s Caucasians.” He invited a guest on air who sang “Barack, the Magic Negro” to the tune of “Puff, the Magic Dragon.” In 2016, he read an essay on air that had been penned by a well-known white supremacist.

Limbaugh’s radio career was also one long exercise in misogyny, perhaps best summed up by his thesis that “feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society.”

In one of his most infamous episodes, he called Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” in 2012 after she testified in Congress about the importance of women having access to birth control.

Nearly every marginalized group or minority bore the brunt of Limbaugh’s bigotry. Once, while speaking about the genocide of America’s indigenous peoples, Limbaugh said, “Holocaust 90 million Indians? Only 4 million left? They all have casinos, what’s to complain about?”

Limbaugh frequently mirrored white nationalist talking points when discussing Latino immigrants, whom he described as lazy and dependent on the government. He called migrants at America’s southern border an “invasion.”

An opponent of marriage equality — which he suggested was “perverted” and “depraved” — Limbaugh argued in 2016 that legalizing gay marriage would lead to bestiality. “What happens if you love your dog?” he said. He once referred to transgender people as being mentally ill.

No, the Dems have always had a talent for demonizing anyone who believes differently than they do, and they doubled down when Trump got elected.

They must take responsibility for their share of the sorry state of political discourse today.

Liberals Reacted As You Can Imagine To Rush Limbaugh’s Death, By Sneering And Celebrating

Prominent liberals began celebrating Wednesday just minutes after conservative political commentator Rush Limbaugh’s wife announced that he had died from complications of lung cancer.

In a now-deleted Tweet, Meghan McCain called on people to “show grace when famous people they disagree with die.”

“Everyone has a family and people who loved them,” McCain said.

I almost expect such classless comments from some fine folks here now.

And I'm sure everyone on the right will be respectful and kind leaving only condolences when Nancy Pelosi passes.

Your faux outrage isn't working, you might want to try a different tack.

Rush has been asking for his grave to be danced on for decades, this OxyContin addict will not be missed by any rational sane patriotic Americans.

Pedophiles, mass murderers along with most bullies and bigots have earned whatever derision they receive after their passing. Their lives were dedicated to inflicting pain on others so they deserve no compassion. I'm certainly not doing a jig over Rush's passing, but I won't begrudge others who do since he was an inflamed wart on societies ass and now that he's gone perhaps we'll all be able to sit down in peace again.

The fact that you compare Rush Limbaugh and Nancy Pelosi with some sort of equivalency is a little distressing.

Some people are going to praise Rush Limbaugh today. Are you in favor of that, or should no one comment on his passing at all other than to note it?

When notorious people die, as Limbaugh surely is, it is not reasonable to expect that everyone will be quiet about it.

They were terrible people while alive, caused nothing but harm, and there is absolutely no reason to pretend that it isn't a good thing that they are dead. Rush is one of those. They were terrible people while alive, caused nothing but harm, and there is absolutely no reason to pretend that it isn't a good thing that they are dead.

This is just a short list and there are several more.

  • As of April 2016 : Over the past 26 years, Mr. Limbaugh and his audience have collectively raised more than $47 million for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, helping provide much-needed research and support for individuals and families affected by blood cancer diseases.
  • “Every year I think it’s going to be the year that we finally have topped out and we’re not going to be able to beat the previous year. And I’ve never been right,” shared Limbaugh. “I and everybody at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America thank you from the bottom of our sizable beating hearts.”
  • As of Dec. 2019: Raised  over $5 million   for the  Tunnel to Towers Foundation  which supports the loved ones of first responders killed in the line of duty. In July of 2019, the foundation paid off the mortgage of the house belonging to the family of a slain  Auburn law enforcement   officer for his wife and two children.
  • On Oct. 19, 2007:  Rush auctioned off a letter he received from congressional Democrats  who were upset with him for statements he made about soldiers who opposed the war and matched the winning bid. He gave the profits to The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation at the time he said, “it’s now official, is going to get in excess of $4.2 million because I am matching Betty Casey’s bid on eBay — $4.2 million.”
  • In July 2018, Limbaugh and his wife donated $500,000 to the  Dana Farber Cancer Clinic  in Boston.

What  a prick and shitty human being .../S

Why not post the entire quote? Because in context, it doesn't mean what you want it to mean. Right?

Clinton: "With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided that they’d they go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make?It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, senator. Now, honestly, I will do my best to answer your questions about this, but the fact is that people were trying in real time to get to the best information. The IC has a process, I understand, going with the other committees to explain how these talking points came out. But you know, to be clear, it is, from my perspective, less important today looking backwards as to why these militants decided they did it than to find them and bring them to justice, and then maybe we’ll figure out what was going on in the meantime."

It's interesting because cigars and cigarettes are smoked differently. In general, you aren't really supposed to inhale a cigar the way you do with a cigarette, so it should be easier on the lungs. But maybe that's negated by spending 30 years in a locked room full of smoke.

I know it's tempting to lash out, but try to treat Rush Limbaugh with the same dignity, respect, and humanity as he showed to rape victims, Michael J. Fox , Sandra Fluke, Iraq War veterans, refugees, and the victims of mosque shootings.

I don't give a fuck what you write.

Fact is you want to complain about what HE said and then say the same or worse things.

You can make all the excuses in the world and your comments about him remain classless and useless.

8. Limbaugh’s many attacks on Obama.

Limbaugh has called Obama a ‘halfrican American’ has said that Obama was not Black but Arab because Kenya is an Arab region, even though Arabs are less than one percent of Kenya. Since mainstream America has become more accepting of African-Americans, Limbaugh has decided to play against its new racial fears, Arabs and Muslims. Despite the fact Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law school, Limbaugh has called him an ‘affirmative action candidate.’ Limbaugh even has repeatedly played a song on his radio show ‘Barack the Magic Negro’ using an antiquated Jim Crow era term for Black a man who many Americans are supporting for president. Way to go Rush.

None of us can fully appreciate the elements and factors of life which chip away at our thinking, intelligence, emotions, and zest for life, but still we rise for the glory of the day and set in the peace of the night. Rush Limbaugh indirectly hurt me, he ruffled my driving for miles of interstate roading-though it was self-inflicted, and he must have enjoyed every damn minute of my personal grief. No, I won't celebrate Rush's professional life, and neither will I publicly curse the dead. I wish Mr. Limbaugh the best of what the grave has to offer, as I wish to all the dead when they escape this place we call home.

Trump praises late Rush Limbaugh in first interview since leaving White House

by  | February 17, 2021 01:19 PM
2-3 minutes

Former President Donald Trump called into Fox News for his first interview since leaving the White House to offer praise of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh shortly after his death was announced on Wednesday.

The 45th president, who   presented   Limbaugh with the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his 2020 State of the Union address, talked about that emotional moment, which came shortly after the radio host announced his cancer diagnosis.

"It was a great honor to do so when we gave the Medal of Freedom. It was something special, it was an incredible night. We gave it during the State of the Union address, and it was especially — half the room, half the room went crazy, and the other half the room, they knew he should get it, but it was special and he was special," Trump said.

Trump said he last spoke to Limbaugh "three or four days ago," adding that "his fight was very, very courageous, and he was very, very sick." Limbaugh's cancer was "something that was not going to be beaten," he said.

Limbaugh died at the age of 70 Wednesday morning   at his home in Palm Beach, Florida, his wife, Kathryn Adams Limbaugh, announced on his radio show.

Trump explained that he didn't really know Limbaugh well until his political career began.

"He was a unique guy, and he became a friend of mine. You know, I didn’t know Rush at all, I had essentially never met Rush, and then when we came down the escalator, he liked my rather controversial speech, I made that speech that was a little bit on the controversial side, and he loved it, and he was, without ever having met him or talked to him or had lunch with him or asked him, he was with me right from the beginning, and he liked what I said, and he agreed with what I said, and he was just a great gentleman — great man," Trump said.

Limbaugh is survived by Kathryn, whom he married in 2010. Limbaugh's fourth wife, the couple never had children.

Even in praising Rush Limbaugh Trump makes it all about himself.  These two pos deserved each other.

Obituaries for talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, who died on Wednesday at the age of 70, have    frequently described    him as a “  conservative provocateur  .” This is technically accurate but euphemistic, akin to calling Bashar al-Assad a “controversial leader.” Limbaugh’s stock in trade was bigotry and offense; his career-long defining trait was a willingness to channel the conservative id in unusually blunt and crude terms.

He repeatedly mocked the death of gay men from AIDS    in the 1980s  , suggested that the Clintons    murdered their aide Vince Foster in the 1990s  , called the NBA “the Thug Basketball Association”    in 2004  , and claimed that college student Sandra Fluke owed him a sex tape in return for taxpayer-subsidized birth control    in 2012  . He once did an impression of former Chinese President Hu Jintao that consisted mostly of    saying “ching chong” over and over again  ; he had a guest on to sing a song titled “  Barack the Magic Negro  .”

These examples are not cherry-picked. Bigotry dressed up as “jokes” or “entertainment” were the stock-in-trade of Limbaugh’s show; he built and maintained a massive audience across decades not in spite of this commentary, but because of it.

“Rush built upon an already robust right-wing media and organizational infrastructure and married it to lowbrow entertainment culture, appealing to a deeply politicized audience of angry white men who did not consider themselves political,” writes    David Astin Walsh  , a historian of conservatism at the University of Virginia. “Limbaugh was the fountainhead for an entire generation of radical right-wing GOP politicians who owe their careers to the politics of resentment and white racial rage.”
