S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Former President Donald Trump and his allies have claimed multiple times that there was a kind of "declassification order" on many of the documents that he took from the White House back to his country club in Florida.

In an interview with the Fox network, Trump said that while he was in office he "often took documents, including classified documents, to the residence" and "had a standing order that documents removed from the Oval Office and taken to the residence were deemed to be declassified the moment he removed them."

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton said that while he was there there was nothing of the sort going on, and that the idea of a standing declassification order is "almost certainly a lie."

ACLU lawyer Matthew Segal noted last week that colleagues sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the National Geospatial-intelligence agency requesting any documents pertaining to an "alleged declassification standing order, any written transmittal of the alleged declassification stand order from the executive office of the president of the United States to NGA, including by letter, memoranda, or email, all records created by NGA that were declassified pursuant to the alleged declassification standing order" up until Jan. 20, 2021.

The same request was also sent to the Department of Homeland Security. Both came back with the same answer.

On Sept. 8, Segal cited the letter from the NGA saying "Our extensive search of National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency records failed to identify any documents in our files that are responsive to your request."

Monday, the Department of Homeland Security returned the information explaining, "We conducted a comprehensive search of files within The Office of the Executive Secretary (ESEC) and the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) for records that would be responsive to your request. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate or identify any responsive records."

What is very telling is that even after all of the filings, not once have they claimed that Trump ACTUALLY declassified anything. It's all Trump "may have" or "could have" or "had the authority to" but no written assertion that he actually DID. It seems that Trump can't get his lawyers to LIE in writing for him.

There is room in our family pre-bought plots for this to actually happen.

Primitive and religious funeral and burial ceremonies have always weirded me out.

This has always been very easy to verify.   There is a formal record of each document that has been declassified.   Without the record, the document is still classified.

Trump could have initiated a declassification process while PotUS on almost any document.   But he had to actually execute (and complete) the process (and that involves other people) while he is PotUS.

Typical Trump lies will not work in this case.   This is like lying that you own a car;  without a recorded title (or equivalent) your claims are irrelevant.

There are ways you can prove ownership, without producing a title. Take that further. This is like test driving a car owned by a dealership, parking it in your garage, asserting to the dealer that you don't have the car, inviting the dealer to look but slow playing the look, complaining when the dealer calls the cops to look...and they find the car, then admitting that you knew you had the car but allege that you purchased the car from the dealer.

I disagree that Trump is the slimiest of political figures we have had; although, I don't know that there is really a way to determine that. There is no arguing that he, by all appearances, is the most prideful, arrogant, and stubborn one. Those characteristics clearly dominate any common sense he has, which certainly lends credibility to a perception that he is the slimiest. Even the most slimy, lying, crooked of politicians, can be more clever in hiding their ways. Throw childish in there. This reminds me of catching my kids, in the act of writing on the wall, and hearing them deny any such writing.

I read the (or equivalent) part. You limited title to a recording, which suggests a limiting of equivalent indicia of title to a writing, such as certificate of title, bill of sale, contract for sale, assignment, etc. I think I reasonably read 'equivalent' to mean a writing. Regardless, I wasn't trying to stir the pot, but suggesting that, based on my reading, a person's claims are not irrelevant absent a writing.

Core of point:

There are two possible explanations: (1) Trump is an idiot. (2) Trump is a corrupt monster.

The amateur logician in me wants to say, "all of the above," but I think that does a disservice to reason number 2.

And he's really not an idiot. An actual idiot doesn't get this far and do this much intentional damage.

That poses an interesting question - is someone an idiot because  their internal machinations are idiotic or because their public statements and behavior are idiotic ?

Its not difficult to make a strong argument that Trump is an idiot just based on the latter.

One theory as to why Donald Trump hoarded the information? To blackmail people.

I can't find a link to it online but Donald Trump once tried to pressure Christine Todd Whitman with a threat of leaking information about her son engaging in disorderly and drunken behavior on a Trump property.

It was on NPR recently.
