George Santos gets two committee assignments

Emily Brooks

Tue, January 17, 2023, 5:45 PM EST

The House GOP Steering Committee on Tuesday recommended that embattled Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) sit on the House Small Business Committee and House Science, Space and Technology Committee , according to sources familiar with the assignments.

Santos’s assignment to the panels comes after multiple members of his own party have called on him to resign over his admitted fabrications about his work history and education, questions about his campaign finances, misleading claims of Jewish heritage and reported charges in Brazil related to checkbook fraud (which Santos has denied), among other issues.

The recommendation from the House GOP Steering Committee, a panel of around 30 members of House leadership and elected regional representatives, will have to be approved by the full House Republican Conference. The conference typically approves the steering panel’s recommendation.

The House Science, Space and Technology Committee is going to be renamed to "The House Science Fiction , Space and Technology Committee."

Santos lied about everything.  SANTOS NEVER ATTENDED COLLEGE.

Are Americans smart enough to realize how unimportant integrity and common sense are to the Republicans by appointing persons like Santos and Greene to committees?  Actually, since those two were elected, I personally doubt it, and I think the Republican Party is suicidal.

Talk to us when Democrats hold their own accountable for lying.

Starting with Brandon the Human Fuck Up Machine (who has lied his whole damn political career about everything and anything!). Then work their way over to Elizabeth "Don't call me Pocahontas!" Warren. They can circle over to Adam "Bobblehead doll" Schiff. Followed by Eric Swalwell. Then clean out all of those who worked on the Jan 6th committee. The entire squad (however many members they are up to). After that they can go after Pelosi and Schumer.

Once they are done with that get back to us about Santos.

Anthony Weiner history:

The resignation comes after  President Barack Obama , House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and dozens of  other congressional Democrats  called for him to step down, and ends nearly three weeks of tumultuous controversy that began on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.

There are two general methods of resignation:   voluntary (honorable) and forced.

Weiner was forced out.   His resignation was a forced resignation.

It is rare for the House to expel a member since that takes 2/3 vote.   The normal course of action is to force them to resign.

In short, it is wrong to consider Weiner to have honorably 'stepped down'.

Now, Santos should resign (honorably).   But I predict he will not do so.   If he 'resigns' it will be a result of being forced out.    I also predict that the House would never secure 2/3 vote to legally expel him.   The GoP has the power to make this happen (many Ds will vote to expel) but they will not pull that trigger.

But it was still a resignation,  his choice.  Weiner didn't have to resign, he could have taken his chances with an expulsion vote but he decided to resign rather than take that risk.  There is no way to force a sitting congressman to resign.

There are basically three ways for a seat in Congress to be vacated before the end of a term: death, resignation and expulsion.

There's a list of seven House Republicans who have called on Santos to resign.  But a resignation is still the choice of Santos.  Your trying to differentiate and it really comes down to resigning for personal reasons or resigning in disgrace.

Personally I think he should resign but as I said when this first came up I didn't think that McCarthy would be quick to expel him.  The numbers in the House between Republicans and Democrats are too close.  McCarthy might feel differently if a Congressman would be appointed from the same party but that's not how the rules work.  It's a special election to fill the seat and no guarantee a Republican would get the vote.

Yeah Snuffy, he technically resigned.

The point, again, is that Weiner was forced out by his party.   That was what you and Al were discussing.

There's a list of seven House Republicans who have called on Santos to resign.  But a resignation is still the choice of Santos.

And that is good to hear; a little integrity in a few politicians.    And of course the resignation is his choice; that was never in question.

It would be significant if McCarthy would step up, but instead he is allowing Santos to serve on committees and operate like any new member:  Santos named to two House committees even as he faces growing calls to resign

Do you see that as the GoP forcing him out?

Your trying to  differentiate and it really comes down to resigning for personal reasons or resigning in disgrace.

I am not trying to differentiate I am absolutely differentiating.   There is a clear difference between honorably resigning and resigning out of force.

Just take note, Snuffy, as to how this went.

Al did not say they were officially expelled, he wrote colloquially:  "got booted".    Being reasonable, that can mean sufficient pressure from the party to force a resignation up to formal expulsion.   Not so much with Franken, but definitely for Weiner.

Your insistence that Al's words must only mean 'expulsion' is the word game.

As usual, when faced with factual / logical opposition you resort to blaming your interlocutor and other bad behavior.

Fuck off

Classy

The GoP should do the right thing and expel Santos.   He certainly deserves it.   But given how McCarthy is treating Santos, there is no real chance that 2/3 of the House will vote to expel.   The Ds would probably almost all vote to expel, but the Rs currently show an overwhelming reluctance to do likewise.   Not too surprising given the degradation of the GoP since Trump entered the picture.

Santos has insisted he will not resign.   So if/when he does resign, it will be a forced resignation.   And if that happens, it will be fair to say that the GoP "booted" him.

There are two general methods of resignation:   voluntary (honorable) and forced.

Yes.

Nixon resigned.

Nixon was "forced" to resign by Congressional Republicans.

Senators Goldwater and Scott and Congressman Rhodes met with Nixon in the Oval Office and told him his support in Congress had all but disappeared. Scott told reporters afterward that they did not pressure Nixon to resign, but simply told the president that "the situation is very gloomy on Capitol Hill." Rhodes told the president he would face certain impeachment when the articles came up for vote in the full House . By Majority Leader O'Neill's estimate, no more than 75 representatives were willing to vote against the obstruction-of-justice article. Goldwater and Scott told the president that not only were there enough votes in the Senate to convict him , but that no more than 15 or so senators were willing to vote for acquittal. Goldwater later wrote that as a result of the meeting, Nixon "knew beyond any doubt that one way or another his presidency was finished." That night, Nixon finalized his decision to leave office.

Nixon was not impeached nor was he convicted.  Butt when ir became clear that he was on the verge of impeachment and conviction, Nixon decided to cut and run.

Both committed crimes and had real physical evidence against them. They resigned because of it.

Now, should Santos resign over the the charges against him? IMO yes; but he is choosing to fight those which is his right under the law. Innocent until proven guilty.

So please stop stating Democrats hold their won accountable. It simply isn't true.

Geeze, another one who wants to fight an incorrect statement.

Yes Nixon resigned but the Congressional Republicans did not force the resignation.  They did not have that power.  All they did was bring the simple fact to his attention that there were enough votes in the House to impeach him and in the Senate to convict him.  So Nixon made a deal to resign and got Ford to pardon him.  But Congress did not force him to resign.  He could have stayed and fought impeachment.  Yes he would have lost but the choice to resign was still his alone.   To say that Congress forced him to resign means that he didn't have any choice in the matter and that is just not true. Your own statement shows it, he decided to cut and run.

In the case of Santos, the House cannot force him to resign.  They can censure him (which is a simple majority vote) or they can expel him (two-thirds vote).  Or they can make his life difficult by removing him from any committees and other Congressmen can refuse to meet and work with him.  And they can repeatedly ask him to resign.  But they cannot force him to resign, that is still his choice.

There are two general methods of resignation:   voluntary (honorable) and forced.

This is wrong.  Resignation is the method of voluntarily leaving Congress which can be done for honorable means or to escape a dishonorable situation.  A congressman can have different reasons why they are resigning, but the act of resigning is just the singular method of voluntarily leaving Congress.   Neither chamber has the Constitutional power to force someone to resign.  They can come to a person and show they have the votes to expel the person and offer him the option to resign but that resignation would still be a choice and not forced.  There have been several instances where a Congressman has refused to resign, fought the expulsion and won.

Santos comes across as many things including a con man and a grifter, but he doesn't come across as stupid.  Why would he resign when he's also facing criminal proceedings where he can use a resignation offer as a counter to criminal prosecution?  Why would he walk away from a position that (a) pays $174k a year and (b) has generated more millionaires than any other career field percentage wise?

For the record I think he should resign but it's not my choice to make.

Do you require a trial to determine that he lied before you would take action against him?    For example, if you were Speaker right now, would you bring Santos up for expulsion given that he does not deny the blatant fraud (lies) which allowed him to be elected on false pretenses?    Or would you require a civil suit verdict before you act?

Yes Nixon resigned but the Congressional Republicans did not force the resignation.

Refusal to accept the reality of a forced resignation.

Resignation is the method of voluntarily leaving Congress which can be done for honorable means or to escape a dishonorable situation.

In the real world, the voluntary resignation can come about by an individual choosing to resign from a post (e.g. an official who no longer can support her president and resigns).   It also is a result of force (an offer one cannot refuse) by political (and other) pressure.    Nixon was forced to resign.  Weiner was forced to resign.

In business, founders of successful companies are forced to resign when the board determines they are no longer net valuable to the health of the company.

Yes the resignation, as a technical instrument, is voluntary.   But no, the reality of the situation is that sometimes the voluntary act was done with a forced hand.

Giving Santos committee assignments is the opposite of forcing him to resign.

Prosecutors in Brazil reopening criminal fraud case against George Santos

BY JARED GANS - 01/03/23 Brazilian authorities are reopening a criminal fraud case against Rep.-elect   George Santos (R-N.Y.) from more than a decade ago and seeking his response, adding to the local and federal investigations already ongoing in the United States following the revelations of the false statements he has made about himself.

A spokesperson for Rio de Janeiro’s prosecutor’s office told The New York Times that police had been unable to locate Santos, but with his location known, the office will request the Justice Department formally notify him of the charges.

Santos reportedly entered a small clothing store in Niterói, a city outside Rio de Janeiro, shortly before his 20th birthday in 2008 and spent almost $700 using a stolen checkbook and a fake name, according to court records.

Santos admitted to the shop owner that he committed fraud in August 2009 and wrote on a social media website that he knows he “screwed up” but wants to pay. He and his mother told police the next year that he stole the checkbook from a man that the mother formerly worked for, the Times reported.

A judge approved a charge against Santos in September 2011 and ordered Santos to respond, but he was in the United States by October.

One might say learn to read and comprehend a thread.  4.1.16 already talked about Nixon's resignation and how it came about.  I was alive when this all happened, I lived it.  In the case of Nixon, Congress did not force anything.  The Republicans went to him and presented him with the fact that there were enough votes in the House to impeach and there were enough votes in the Senate to convict and that Nixon's presidency was ending.  Now Nixon could have fought impeachment but he decided the safer course of action was to resign.  There is a lot of speculation but I've never seen/heard any direct evidence that a deal was made for Nixon to resign and Ford to pardon him, but that sure seems like what happened.  Congress did not force Nixon to resign and from your paste above

Scott told reporters afterward that they did not pressure Nixon to resign, but simply told the president that "the situation is very gloomy on Capitol Hill."Rhodes told the president he would face certain impeachment when the articles came up for vote in the full House.

they did not "force" him either.  All they did was lay out the facts.

The discussion thread was that Congress cannot force Santos to resign because Congress does not have the Constitutional authority to force anybody to resign.  For a Congressman or Senator they can pull them off committees, they can censure them or they can expel them.  Congressional leadership can go to Santos and plead, beg or demand that he resign but they cannot force him to resign,  plan and simple.  And as I explained elsewhere, why would he give up a $174k job and any potential leverage when he's also looking at potential criminal charges out of the State of New York?

You can call me names but I'm not the one here trying to redefine the usage of words.

To be fair, many republicans are calling for george anthony devolder santos to resign. Unbelievably, I'm saddened at watching the gop implode and turn on each other.

From Twitter: Someone should make "George Santos Lie-A-Day" desk calendars.

Another one I just heard. Now he is lying about having to have knee replacement surgery after playing on a college volleyball team...

He then claimed that while he was at Baruch his team “went to play against Harvard, Yale and we slayed them. We were the champions across the entire Northeast Corridor. Every school that came against us, they were shaking at the time. And it’s funny, I was the smallest guy and I’m six-two.”

.

“Look, I sacrificed both my knees and got very nice knee replacements from HSS [Hospital for Special Surgery] playing volleyball… that’s how serious I took the game.”

Then he was complaining about kids having college debt and saying he finished college debt free...

“I put myself through college and got an MBA from NYU and I have zero debt,” he said during the Police Off the Cuff podcast in 2020. “I hate looking at youth today and seeing them sitting on their behinds and acting like, ‘Ugh, this is so hard,’” he continued. He also said during the interview that his parents “helped where they could” but were going through bankruptcy, even   though   The Daily Beast   notes   that there is no official report of his parents going through bankruptcy.

So he lied about the college and any debt and his parents bankruptcy...

This thing could tell the truth to save his life.

I just saw on the news, journalism indicating that Santos claimed to have started his drag career at the age of 17 and he claimed to have won many beauty contests.

Someone even provided video purported to be Santos in Drag Character.

Rather convincing.

They also dug up interviews involving the LGBTQ community from one Anthony Devolder

in Politico circa 2019.

He also claimed to have starring roles in Disney films.

He's a grifter that lied and used his mothers death and supposedly his dogs death

to raise money for his own use.

He is so despicable, he lied about his being Jewish and being related to Holocaust

victims to get elected in a largely Jewish US Congressional District.

IMHO he should get free one way airfare back to Brazil like Bin Laden's last flight.

Fortunately most Americans voted against the Retrumplicans.

The Retrumplicans failed in an attempted coup.  They have no respect for, nor do they have any allegiance for, the US Constitution.  The worship their fearful leader and the political Party he destroyed.

The members of the Retrumplican Party are unAmerican traitors who desire a new unCivil War.

It's unfolding in real time today as Santos completely amends, amends and amends his campaign

financial disclosures several times as the previous campaign treasurer has cut him loose, now he has

submitted files with a new treasurer named who denies he works with or for Santos or the campaign.

He is alleging electronic signature forgery by the Santos campaign.

Holy crap. When does it end?

Add Broadway producer to the long list of George Santos’s fabrications.

While running for Congress in 2021, Santos told some potential donors he was a producer on the musical   Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark , according to people familiar with the discussions. That show, which ran from 2011 to 2014, was an ill-fated production that lost tens of millions of dollars and suffered from technical mishaps and actor injuries.

The lead producer, Michael Cohl, denied Santos’s involvement, saying through an assistant that he wasn’t a producer on the musical. Santos’s name also never appeared in the playbills for the show.

A spokeswoman for Santos referred questions to his lawyer, Joseph W. Murray, who didn’t immediately respond to a voicemail seeking comment.

I guess saying you produced a panned and failed Broadway play is more believable than saying you produced West Side Story.
