Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar killed in Gaza by Israeli forces, officials say - ABC News
The Israeli foreign minister said Thursday that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was among three people killed in an operation in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip, Israel Foreign Minister Israel Katz said Thursday.

Sinwar has been credited as the mastermind behind the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel that led to the deaths of 1,200 people, the worst terrorist attack in Israel's history.

"The master murderer Yahya Sinwar, who is responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7, was killed" by Israel Defense Forces soldiers, Katz said in a statement. "This is a great military and moral achievement for Israel and a victory for the entire free world against the evil axis of extreme Islam led by Iran."

Sinwar, 62, had served as Hamas' leader in Gaza since 2017 and assumed leadership of the group's political bureau after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Iran this July.

Israeli authorities said they had been pursuing Sinwar for a year and that he had been hiding "behind the civilian population of Gaza, both above and below ground in Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip." The IDF and Israel Security Agency said their operations in recent weeks in southern Gaza restricted his movement and "led to his elimination" on Wednesday.

"Sinwar died while beaten, persecuted and on the run -- he didn't die as a commander, but as someone who only cared for himself," Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant said in a statement. "This is a clear message to all of our enemies - the IDF will reach anyone who attempts to harm the citizens of Israel or our security forces, and we will bring you to justice."

The IDF initially said they were "checking the possibility" that the Hamas leader was among three militants killed in an operation in Gaza and were working to confirm identification through dental images and DNA testing.

Israeli police said there is a "definitive identification" of Sinwar's assassination based on a comparison of dental records and fingerprint matching.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heralded his death as "an important landmark in the decline of the evil rule of Hamas" in a video address.

Katz said Sinwar's death "creates a possibility for the immediate release of the abductees and to bring about a change that will lead to a new reality in Gaza -- without Hamas and without Iranian control."

Israeli President Isaac Herzog also said in a statement that Israel "must act in every way possible to bring back the 101 hostages" still in Gaza.

Netanyahu said that to those who peacefully return the hostages, "we will allow him to go out and live."

"The return of our hostages is an opportunity to achieve all our goals and it brings the end of the war closer," he said.

President Joe Biden said in a statement that he directed Special Operations personnel and intelligence professionals to "work side-by-side with their Israeli counterparts to help locate and track Sinwar" and other Hamas leaders hiding in Gaza.

"There has rarely been a military campaign like this, with Hamas leaders living and moving through hundreds of miles of tunnels, organized in multiple stories underground, determined to protect themselves with no care for the civilians suffering above ground," he said. "Today, however, proves once again that no terrorists anywhere in the world can escape justice, no matter how long it takes."

Biden said it is a "good day" for Israel, the U.S. and the world, and likened Israelis' reactions to the death to "scenes witnessed throughout the United States after President Obama ordered the raid to kill Osama Bin Laden in 2011."

Biden said he will be speaking with Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders to "discuss the pathway for bringing the hostages home to their families, and for ending this war once and for all, which has caused so much devastation to innocent people."

Seven Americans are among the 101 hostages remaining in Gaza, four of whom are believed to still be alive, Biden said.

During remarks while at a campaign stop in Milwaukee, Vice President Kamala Harris said Sinwar has "blood on his hands" and assured that "any terrorist who kills Americans, threatens the American people or threatens our troops or our interests, know this, we will always bring you to justice."

In 1989, an Israeli court sentenced Sinwar to four life sentences for his role in killing suspected Palestinian informers and plotting to murder two Israeli soldiers.

Sinwar spent the following 22 years in prison before becoming one of more than 1,000 Palestinian detainees released in 2011 in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been held hostage by Hamas for five years.

Congratulations to the Israeli Defense Forces for bringing a murderous terrorist to much deserved justice.

Another one bites the dust!

I suppose the big question now is-- who will replace him? Will Hamas' new leader continue the way Sinwar has-- or wil the new leader be willing to accept a comprise and make peace?

This probably means the end for any remaining hostages, sadly.

Netanyahu did not start this war.  The ending of the war has nothing to do with Netanyahu, it has to do with the fact that the Hamas militants will not give up, will not surrender, will not stop trying to kill Jews until the last militant is dead and gone.  As I've said time after time, since they are devout Muslims they will fight the Jews and kill them in order to bring forth The Day of Judgment, as they are commanded to do in their holy Quran, and if they die in the process they have been promised to be able to sojourn in The Garden of Allen forever deflowering and enjoying their 72 virgins.  You can kill a snake by cutting off its head but it's already been proven by Hezbollah that even if you cut off the head of its snake, it will not stop them from carrying out what the Quran commands them to do.

Yes, you've met decent peaceful Muslims, so have I, in Israel, and even here.  Have you ever met a terrorist Hamas militant?   This Imam would not have been able to get away with saying this in Canada, but in America it's not considered hate speech, or an incentive or "justification" for killing Jews, it's your HOLY free speech that permits it.

  OIP-C.VlOxhSdnfPHEoxcIA4gikQAAAA?rs=1&pid=ImgDetMain

It's permitted because it's a quotation from the "HOLY QURAN", the Muslim bible.  It's part of the HOLY QURAN's command for Muslims to kill Jews.  IT WILL NEVER END

That comment is describing fatalism. Moreover, it clearly indicates that the Koran and its adjoining religion Islam is the root of the problem in the region. As the people can't change until they modify that which they hold to be unchangeable and unswerving. . .their belief system.

There is unfortunately no solution to the problem for Israel. Because holy books can't change their 'stripes' or wordings. Therefore, no 'relief' will be coming in any of our lifetimes.

It should be well known that the Palestinian terrorists who are in Israeli jails are financially supported with the donations and financial aid provided to the Palestinian government, and when a Palestinian terrorist is killed, their families are supported with your and my tax dollars as well, at least with what's left after the leaders have stashed a bundle in Switzerland.

The only time the death penalty was imposed in Israel that I'm aware of was to eliminate Adolf Eichmann. I don't think many people in the world would have complained about that.

"Are the non-Jewish inhabitants of Gazza and the West bank treated as second class citizens by the Israeli government ?"

Are Canadians treated as second class citizens by the American government?  I thought the whole world knows that Gaza (spelling) and The West Bank were not sovereign Israeli lands.  Most of the world has indicated that they are part of a Palestinian State.

"Are the Jewish settlers in the West Bank afforded different privileges and levels of protection?"

They need to be.  According to you they are "strangers in a strange land".

"Are normal everyday "Palestinians' treated like A human beings first and potential terrorist second  or B the other away round?"

That depends on individual cases.  If they suicide bomb a crowded pizza parlour killing Jewish CHILDREN (Did I make that as prejudicial as the world's media does?) or blow up a peaceful Passover seder slaughtering Jewish WOMEN and CHILDREN or set off a bus bomb to kill many innocent WOMEN and CHILDREN, especially CHILDREN, because after all, the Israeli military doesn't use them as human shields like Hamas does, THEN they just might be considered terrorists.

"He certainly contributed to the situation by condemning most negotiated solutions .."

I have to agree with that.  He does stubbornly insist that Israel control the Philadelphi Corridor (the Gaza border with Egypt) which is through which Hamas imports the weapons it uses to kill Jews.

Most of the world has indicated that they are part of a Palestinian State.

And yet Netanyahu and the current Kinnessett (spelling) were ready in June of 2024 to declare 5 illegal settlements legal and therefore part of Israel with full benefits for the Jewish squatters, in the WB.

CHILDREN

Your Israel just carpet bombed an entire city to rubble and killed

  • Killed: at least 42,500 people, including nearly 16,765 children
  • Injured: more than 99,546 people including children
  • Missing: more than 10,000  including children

in the sovereign enclave formerly known as the Gazza Strip,

in retaliation for 1,200 people horrifically killed on OCT 7 - please tell us when enough is enough.  Benny seems to think he is the SS commander when the Germans returned to the Warsaw Ghetto to kill every last Jewish terrorist in the ghetto, even the thousands who surrendered were murdered in cold blood in the streets of Warsaw.  That's what Benny wants.  and it isn't possible, hasn't worked in 76 years for this British/UN declared enclave.

Hamas

Hamas is not Gaza (spelling)

Hamas is not the West Bank

Sorry to say that no matter how large a font you pick, we aren't going to agree.

No more so than I would agree with the Catholic Crusaders or Inquisitors.

No more than my extended Jewish American family believes Israel holds any moral high ground.

How I feel has already been posted here and elsewhere over and over and over and I'm not going to waste my time explaining my opinions over and over and over again for everyone here who are obviously happy to throw Israel to the wolves.  Remember what Iran has said - First the little Satan and then the big Satan, but the big Satan won't have the little Satan there to stop it from happening.  Don't even DREAM that 9/11 can't happen again, in SPADES.  Watch the movie The Sum of All Fears again.  It's amazing how life often imitates art.

I saw something years ago breaking down how Oliver's entire show is simply  repetition of the basic principles of mental conditioning.  He make a very shallow, quick argument or straw man attack , follows that by making  a joke or absurd metaphor with a laughter overlayed targeting the rival position that also serves to  stop anyone from thinking about the shallowness of the original argument, and repeats over and over for the segment.

Informing the viewer  is not the point, but to condition the viewer to subconsciously scoff at the opposing viewpoint by associating it with mocking laughter. .

Buzz, forgive me, ahead of time if I offend. But, . . .strangely I enjoyed the back and forth between you and several other members. . . not because it was 'arguing' but because it 'dug' down deeper into the problem(s) in the Middle East. As you have stated, you have "lived" it. . .by living there and talking to people.

I remember the Covid-19 "China virus" debacle Crooked Donald started. . . and you had to speak up for China because you know the Chinese government differently than he was portraying the country and its people.

We're not against you. Or, at least, we should not be

That said, there are questions. . . .

For example, since this morning when I joined this article, I have had two observations/questions come to mind that I wanted to ask 'somebody' (yes, I know whom I wanted to ask but I won't spotlight individuals here) but I thought better of doing so. . .until right now.

1. I, in my heart, wonder why 'warring parties' overseas "jell" here and can exist even live on the same streets in America. I have tactfully not asked the question before because I did not want to jinx these circumstances.. But, it is true. What is it about living in other parts of the world makes fighting people. . . for lack of a better word- calm? (This is Ukrainians-Russians; 'warring parties' in Africa; Syrians and 'whomever" they fight; Palestinians and Israelis, and so forth and so on. There are mixed religious folks - including Indians and Pakistanis (of the disputed Kashmir region dispute - living on my very street.)

2. This occupation of the West Bank is it real? If so, say so. It is not your doing.

Governments do. . .these things and some of us are simply trying to ferret out how we got here in international politics, because we have not been following it. . .as much/often as those who have a vested interest in those places. Yet, now it is becoming more of an 'every man's' reason to understand and in some ways relate.

Lastly, I am sure the above is not articulated well by me. The subject matter is 'ripe' for misunderstanding and questioning motives for asking . . . but I assure you I don't hold you or anybody else personally accountable for what Israel does or what Israel does not do. Or what Palestinians do or don't do. You have every right to support Israel . . . and you have good company: The United States of America backs up Israel.

But, that said, some of us have long-kept questions about the region. And, you are an 'added' source for answers. And, I am a firm believer in asking good questions - getting good answers!  :) :) :)

(Sheepishly, holding my hat in my hand, thank you for listening.)

And by now a thousand Americans are in Israel to set up a THAD missile defense network.

It's most likely that 98% of them are gentiles put in the same harm as the IDF and Israeli civilian.

That isn't throwing Israel to the wolves, and it's probably the beginning of "the creep" of more units, more personnel being transferred to Israel. The gradual sucking in of America, again.

Fuck Iran and to hell with your mean pessimism.

I had read that it was one unit and 100 personnel.  Can you link to a source tor your statement.  Well, yes, I DO admit that I am pessimistic about the whole world's treatment of Israel.  And notwithstanding the provision of a defence-only unit, your government HAS issued threats of withholding arms for Israel.

Yes 100 per Thad unit.

2,000 have been put on alert for immediate deployment and Biden is set to visit Israel.

And notwithstanding the provision of a defence-only unit, your government HAS issued threats of withholding arms for Israel.

Yes because Benny is withholding food and water to the refugees from Gazza  and he doesn't need any more 2000lb bombs.  He should be asking for humanitarian aid, but he keeps that from Gaza as well

Biden recently authorized release of half of the 1,800 2,000 lb bombs and 1,200 500 lb bombs because of concerns for civilians and the fact there are no real targets left that require a 2,000lb bomb.

"Yes because Benny is withholding food and water to the refugees from Gazza..."

Wow.  Hamas' propaganda is REALLY effective.  Hamas is hijacking the aid that is being sent, keeping it for themselves and to sell for exorbitant prices to the civilians.  Hamas' use of psychological propaganda, as they've been trained to do REALLY works.  They've ALREADY won the propaganda war.

By the way, if they're refugees from (as you spell it) Gazza, where are they?  Egypt?  If so, is Egypt starving them?  Or is this just another avenue to "BLAME ISRAEL".

And if there are any Iranians, they are probably all legal immigrants (?).

There are a lot of legal Iranian immigrants in the LA area--- in fact one was mayor of Beverly Hills!

Jamshid "Jimmy" Delshad (Persian: جمشید «جیمی» دلشاد) is an Iranian-American politician in the state of California. He became Mayor of Beverly Hills on March 21, 2007 when he was sworn in by Fred Hayman, and again on March 16, 2010. He is the first Iranian-American to hold public office in Beverly Hills.

(I've known some Iranian-Americans-- they insist on being called "Persians" -- or "Persian-Americans"). They are poud of their heritage. (They are not Arabs-- rather they are descendents of people of the ancient Persian Empire)

(Many of the Chinese consistantly get higher grades than most other groups...in fact its a known fact that most universities discriminate agaisnt Chinese kids because if they choose students based on merit-- the Chinese kids would make up an overwhelming number of students in Universities).

Even though America is afraid to allow many Chinese students get education visas. there are lots of other countries that do.  One reason they do is because many get to remain in those countries and their superior abilities are a boon to those countries.  I know how bright Chinese students can be, because I was their teacher.

It really does seem like nothing will stop them-- as soon as one is eliminated another appears to take their place.

I thinkthe reason for that is so many actually believe the myth: that if they die "fighting for Islam"-- they will goto their Heaven, which they believe is such a wonderfully amazing place...
