Ohio Teacher's Union reneges on deal
"We said to our school districts that we would take some of the precious vaccine allotted to Ohio and vaccinate teachers and other staff as long as they'd be back in school full-time or in a hybrid model no later than March 1," DeWine began. "We've learned there are a handful of schools that have said they will break that commitment. Not just a commitment to me, but also to the children of their districts. This is simply not acceptable. This is about the kids."

Despite a mandate and a promise the Cleveland Teachers Union voted Thursday night to instruct members to continue remote learning next Monday, March 8. Union president Shari Obrenski claimed that educators are, "eager to come back to the classroom to serve their students in person, but not until we can ensure a safe and orderly return."

The problem is that the teacher's union demanded that their members be made a priority in receiving the covid vaccine, just as they have done in every other part of the country. They were granted that demand when the Governor included school staff in Phase 1B of Ohio's coronavirus vaccine rollout.

"Two of the districts the governor called out were Akron Public Schools and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

"In Akron, school staff has been vaccinated in the Akron School District. But now we're told they won't go back until March 15. That is not acceptable," DeWine bristled. "In Cleveland, we are in the midst of vaccinating teachers and personnel in Cleveland City Schools. I asked if we should stop the vaccinations. Their CEO (Eric Gordon) has made a commitment to me to do everything in his power to get the kids back in class March 1."

Can't local governments rid themselves of this toxic union?

How did this union ever gain such unbridled power?

The # 1 enemy of education in America is still, as usual, the teacher's union.

Another American tragedy in the progressive era.

Trump and his followers and I are off topic.

There's such a thing? Methinks you are giving far too much importance to a supposed era that was also dominated by a muddle of other moronic best worlds possible.

Meh ... Ohio only launched its centralized state COVID-19 vaccine website on Monday.

Anywho, DeWine will address the masses today at 2P.M.

The # 1 enemy of education in America is still, as usual, the teacher's union.

My Mother taught and was a member of the teachers union for 35 years. Quite frankly, I don't think that they paid her enough. She worked the whole school year from the time she got up at 6 in the morning until 10:30-11 o'clock at night, grading papers, preparing lesson plans, creating report cards. Her thoughts and concerns were about her students, how to teach them, how to make them into productive members of society, and how to make sure that when they left her classroom she had imparted to them some of the characteristics that they would need in life. Oh, yeah, she had to find the time in there to be a mother and a wife as well.

You paint the whole thing as teachers being lazy and just wanting more time off. It is a really good thing that someone got up and taught you when you were a child. Too bad no appreciation of the time and dedication it takes to do that came of it.

Fuck everyone who thinks that teaching is an easy job and that teachers do not deserve respect. They are the most deserving people of your respect and gratitude because they have the responsibility to take your warped children and turn them into conscientious adults. And then they get shit on by the likes of you because they are afraid that they are going to catch the virus.

False. I didn't paint teachers as anything. I rightfully took aim at the powerful teacher's union.

Fuck the teacher's union, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and the senile old man in the WH.

Unfortunately the good teachers are characterized the same as the bad teachers, just like the good cops are with the bad cops.

Not all teachers are worthy of respect.

There is nothing wrong with homeschooling children.  Of course they are also stereotyped by the misinformed.

My wife is a school-teacher and the hours listed by you are "normal" and they should also include the wonderful Sat/Sun "working" hours as well as "normal".

With the pandemic, she is teaching from home with her three laptops going full speed and the "DO NOT DISTURB" sign on the front living room door that has been converted into her office space.  And, believe me, if you do dare to interrupt her, heaven help you.

12 - 14 hour work days are "normal" - 7 days a week.  Makes having a family life kinda difficult, but when the time is there, we thoroughly appreciate it.

Pay???  Gimme a break.  If teachers received the proposed $15.00 - hell, we'd be millionaires (:-)) based on her hours and the overtime that is never paid 'cause they're salaried.

Teacher's Union is a joke.  They don't listen to the members - they listen to the money from the districts/politicians.

Starting salary in the state of Western Australia is $72,137 by year 9 they are at $107,049.

Of course, Australia has a great deal of respect for teachers and considers them a desirable and needed occupation.

My granddaughter is at an even higher pay scale and loves teaching.

My wife's brother is in Melbourne and he keeps on trying to get us to move down there.  I'd love too having spent time there on R&R.  I fell in love with the people and the country and their life styles.  She would also love to move - but - we can't get her on a plane ride for more than 5 minutes, so I would imagine the 12 hour flight would be somewhat of a challenge.

It's the love of teaching or caring for others

That is true, but it's certainly is an advantage if they are paid well and respected at the same time and that is what is happening in OZ.

False. I didn't paint teachers as anything. I rightfully took aim at the powerful teacher's union.

And just who does the teacher's union represent? Why do you think that they are taking this position? Could it possibly be that the members of the teachers union said that it was not safe to return to these particular schools? It looks to me like the CEO (Really, they have a CEO as head of schools? That is the first problem.) did not consult with the union when they told the governor that they would be open by the 1st of March. That seems like a very large thing to overlook.

Fuck the teacher's union, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and the senile old man in the WH.

The union leaders represent themselves; and themselves alone. Just like the AEW and every other powerful union does. The fact that you think think they give a shit about their members is cute.

Why do you think that they are taking this position?

This is about using their power to get more for themselves. They are using the new Democratic mantra of "Never let a good crisis go to waste."

Could it possibly be that the members of the teachers union said that it was not safe to return to these particular schools?

Why? The teachers would moved to the head of the list for receiving vaccinations. Or are they suggesting the vaccinations are not safe or effective?

It looks to me like the CEO (Really, they have a CEO as head of schools? That is the first problem.) did not consult with the union when they told the governor that they would be open by the 1st of March.

Looks to me like typical Union extortion. Just waiting on their demands. Or maybe they are trying to force the governor to ask them what it will take for them to allow teachers to return to the classroom? Either way they are expecting something in return.
