A majority of Americans in a new poll think it would be bad for the country if former President Trump runs for office in 2024.

A majority of Americans in a new poll think it would be bad for the country if former  President Trump  runs for office in 2024.

The survey, conducted by Quinnipiac University, found that 60 percent of respondents said it would be bad for the country if Trump were to launch a bid for president in 2024.

Thirty-two percent of respondents, however, said another Trump campaign would be good for the country.

For months the former president has been teasing an announcement on whether he will throw his hat in the ring for a third attempt at the presidency.

Trump last month said he has made up his mind on whether he will run for the White House again in 2024. That decision, however, remains unknown.

Forty-nine percent of respondents polled said they think Trump will ultimately run for president in 2024, with 39 percent saying he will not. Twelve percent said they did not have an opinion.

When asked how likely they would be to vote for a candidate endorsed by Trump, 19 percent of respondents said they would be more likely to support the contender and 41 percent said they would be less likely. Thirty-seven percent of those polled said the former president's endorsement would not make a difference in their vote.

When examined by party, 54 percent of Republicans surveyed said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate backed by Trump, with only 6 percent saying they would be less likely. Thirty-four percent of Republicans said a Trump endorsement would not make a difference.

The statistics from Quinnipiac come as the former president has been extremely selective with his endorsements, which are often treated as a coveted prize within the GOP.

The effectiveness of the support, however, is still up for debate.

Trump's favored candidate in the Texas special runoff election last week, Susan Wright, lost to Jake Ellzey.

In a statement on Wednesday, the former president said Wright lost because Democrats voted for Ellzey.

"My endorsed candidate won in the Primary, but the other outstanding candidate won the General Election because virtually 100% of Democrats, approximately 17% of the total vote, supported the candidate I did not endorse," Trump said in a statement.

The former president, however, gained clout on Tuesday, when the candidate he endorsed, Mike Carey, won a special House election in Ohio in a crowded primary field of GOP contenders.

Trump's team in June was reportedly warning Republican candidates running for various offices not to fake endorsements from the former president before he makes an official statement, after a number of contenders were creating the appearance that they were backed by Trump.

The poll surveyed 1,290 U.S. adults nationwide between July 27 and Aug. 2. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

Let us hope that Donald Trump will take note of the poll plus what democrats were able to pull off in 2020. The GOP needs him as statesman & inspiration, but the 2024 election should go to Governor Ron DeSantis. We know from what he has done in Florida, that he will advance the America First policy while facing a lot less resistance.

The pademic now belongs to democrats.

I agree Vic, because it will become clear before long that Trump wouldn't win another national election. DeSantis is laying low and reading the polls and the tea leaves for the time being. I suspect he will put out feelers early next year and begin to distance himself from Trump. I know I will not vote for Trump again. I think a DeSantis-Haley ticket would be a winner.

Right now, the Republicans need to concentrate on winning the House and Senate, and the way the Dems are messing up and losing voters, the chances are good that we can put a stop to the current left wing madness.

That's ok. He was an outsider. It isn't easy to find the right people. DeSantis has the right kind of experience. Another plus for him. Thanks for raising that point.

The most likely outcome is that Donald Trump will destroy Ron DeSantis over the course of the next couple years , thus eliminating the presumed major obstacle to Trump becoming the GOP candidate in '24.

DeSantis, out of fear of the Trump cult, will not fight back in kind.

The Trump cult is the key to everything related to Trump or a Republican opposing Trump. As long as Trump is a free man, healthy enough, and wants it, he will be the Republican nominee in 2024. The only thing DeSantis can do is take the beating he is in for.

False argument. We are not arguing who keeps their bodies in shape. We are arguing who had the most energy in the job of being president and Trump wins that by a mile. You voted for an idiot proxy for Bernie Sanders to get rid of Trump and now you want to say that Joe Biden can put in the time Trump did. Don't bother. People aren't stupid!

This is their dear leader...

The Washington Post Fact Checker's ongoing database of false or misleading claims made by Trump since assuming office stands at more than 30,500.

Dr. Bandy X. Lee, a forensic psychiatrist and author of "Profile of a Nation: Trump's Mind, America's Soul" told ABC News she viewed Trump's "pattern of lying seems to consist of beginning with a conscious lie intended to deceive others -- or to cover up who he really is -- but as more people believe him and the adulations of crowds gratify him in irresistible ways, he comes to believe in his own lies."

"He has adopted almost a practice of preferentially lying over telling the truth," she added. "His grandiose sense of himself, on the other hand, does not allow for any possibility that he is wrong."

He is a lying sack of shit and his followers act like he is a beacon of truth. Seems some people would rather be blind to truth.

I agree, a Trump run in 2024 would be a bad idea.  Trump would use a political campaign as a forum to litigate the past which would stunt the progress made in changing the Republican Party.  And a rehash of the institutional biases that became apparent during Trump's Presidency is not what the country needs.

Trump pointed to the horizon and said 'we're going thataway'.  Trump gave a direction toward the future which is what the country needed then.  What the country needs now are clear, concise, robust priorities and policy goals that move the country in the direction Trump pointed to.  Trump changed the course of the ship of state; what is needed now is someone to drive the ship in that direction.

Joe Biden attempting to steer the ship of state back onto its old course isn't turning out very well.  The 'not Trump' thing has pointed the ship of state toward disaster on the horizon and that is becoming more apparent with each passing day.  The advantage in the 2024 election goes to the candidate embracing a change course.  Trump did the hard part of changing the course of the ship of state; Republicans only need to move in that direction.

Trump has to use the possibility of a Presidential campaign as a threat to keep the Republican Party moving in a new direction.  Trump running in 2024 would split the Republican Party just as his 2016 run split the Republican Party.  So, the possibility of a Presidential run is a potent threat.  Trump has shifted the political imperative from 'the Republican Party must change' to become 'the Republican Party will change'.  There's no longer any doubt, the Republican Party will change or Trump will split the party.  And if the Republican Party backslides into its comfortable neo-liberal playbook then Trump running again becomes more certain.  Mitt Romney take heed, your Republican Party isn't going to return.
