A Michigan City Clerk Has Been Charged With Altering Ballots (09/24/2019)

We are told by so many on the left that ballot tampering and election fraud does not occur. Once they are confronted with an example of it happening we are then told by them is that it rarely happens. At what point are they going to admit it does happen and happens more often then we and they think.

Now we have an example of election fraud and ballot tampering right here in Michigan and it is a Democrat that has been charged.

The National Review is reporting that Sherikia Hawkins, the city clerk for Southfield Michigan has been charged with six felony counts for allegedly altering absentee ballots during the November 2018 election.Ms. Hawkins, a registered Democrat was arraigned Monday in Southfield on:

  • falsifying returns or records
  • forgery of a public record
  • misconduct in office
  • and multiple counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

She was released on $15,000 bond.

The National Review article stated:

The alleged misconduct was discovered after the Oakland County Clerk's Office noticed that 193 voter files had been changed to reflect that the voters failed to include a valid signature or return date, when all of the implicated voters had in fact included both items. The county clerk's office later discovered the original voter files in the trash at the election-division office. The Michigan State Police then launched an investigation that resulted in Hawkins's arrest."=

Attorney General Dana Nessel and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, both of whom are Democrats, are circling the wagons and put out a statement which in part said:

Voting is fundamental to the very essence of our democracy...It is incumbent upon state governments to safeguard the electoral process and ensure that every voter's right to cast a ballot is protected.

A very interesting note is Michigan's Democratic party just honored Ms. Hawkins with the prestigious Dingell/Levin award at its annual Legacy Dinner in Detroit.

Hmmm, now we must ask why she was honored.

Another interesting point is Ms. Hawkins has overseen a total of 16 elections in Oakland County, going back to 2010.It appears we are going to have to look back at all of those elections and I hope make Ms. Hawkins and/or the Democratic Party pay for that review and not the Michigan tax payer.

Another interesting point was back in 2010 Ms. Hawkins was serving as the Pontiac city clerk when Democrat Gary Peters won an extremely tight ninth congressional district race against Republican Rocky Raczkowski. Gary Peters won that election by just 6,405 votes out of a total 245,055 cast, that is just a 2.6% difference. If she tampered just 3,203 votes, a 1.3% flip Gary Peters would not have won and possibly would not be Senator Peters today.

Remember this is the same party that believes in same day voter registration and no need for photo identification to vote, interesting is it not?

Funny when you remember that the Democratic Party just one month ago created a full-time voter protection director position.Maybe they created that position to monitor there own party or attempt to protect the voter fraud that they are committing.

Who knows.

That the system of elections is policed thoroughly and the bad actors get caught? 'Cause that is what it looks like to me.

The headline from WBCK is incorrect, she was arraigned 9/24/2019 for altering qualified voter records, not ballots.

N o votes were changed nor were any voters disenfranchised.

As of  June 12, 2020 Hawkins has been ordered to stand trial for altering official docs.

She has already been in court in January17 & March 10 and June 12, 2020.

Too long of a process for apparently bad accounting practices....

That one says it all!

So it only takes one?

"The North Carolina Republican political operative at the center of an absentee ballot fraud scheme that led the state to order a rerun of a congressional election was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice on Wednesday, officials said."

" Trump Fan Accused of Registering Democrats as Republicans "

"A woman in Florida charged with 10 felony counts of submitting false voter registration forms had filed hundreds of forms before her arrest.

"Police in Iowa have charged a 55-year-old woman with election misconduct after she reportedly voted twice for Donald Trump."

"I wasn’t planning on doing it twice, it was spur of the moment. The polls are rigged,” she said, echoing the Republican nominee's mantra.

"The polls are rigged" said the conservative Republican woman committing voter fraud.

"Two Ohio Republicans have been charged with distributing phony sample ballots that investigators say were designed to trick voters."

"Robert Landon, a Republican candidate in the Marion City auditor race, and John Matthews, a former Marion County Republican Party official, were both charged in the election fraud scheme"

And no, this isn't "off topic" considering it is simply showing that "This one" accusation of voter fraud doesn't "say it all".

What well written piece? I read the above trashy seed making wild bullshit accusations like "If she tampered just 3,203 votes". Yeah, and if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle.

Does it appear this woman commited voter fraud much like those many Republicans I listed? Perhaps, she has been accused of tampering with 193 voter files. Does this say anything about Democrats in general? Only as much as those many Republican's caught committing voter fraud reflects on Republicans in general.

Thanks for the admission.

It shouldn't be about party affiliation. The point of the story is that despite the heavy penalties, somebody with a position of authority was willing to commit fraud. Voter fraud is an unusual crime isn't it? It doesn't involve profit. It is a crime involving ideology. I get the feeling this story really bothers some. I wonder why?

C'mon Vic. What is bothersome is you took the time to 'highlight' well, this.  And so we show up (as expected) with 'required' push-back. It's all a big YAWN except for maybe you. Just so you know, liberals have talked voter fraud and perceptions of voter fraud, and the administrations activities and opinings on voter fraud, and voter fraud and the 2020 census for several long cycles now!

Southfield .... one of the biggest Democrat hotbeds in Michigan.    This is just the tip of the iceberg IMO.

I'll am all for methods to make voting easier and absentee ballots but we have to find a way to assure this sort of thing CAN NOT happen.   EVER

This happened in 2018.  I'm wondering why she hasn't been investigated until now.

So, investigate her election activity history (not just 2018, but earlier..or later, if necessary), try her in front of a jury of her peers, and if convicted, punish her appropriately.

I think we can all agree on that.

There is enough political divisiveness around w/o having doubt cast on the integrity of our elections. Anyone, regardless of party affiliation, that is proven to tamper with votes deserves to be punished to the full extent of the law.

If that doesn't stop it, then the laws have to be changed to include stricter sentences.

At what point are they going to admit it does happen and happens more often then we and they think.

We can affirm that a minuscule amount of voter fraud happens, because before, some republicans have been caught manipulating ballots.

(In blue) Does the phrase: Argument from ignorance mean anything to this statement?

We can affirm that a minuscule amount of voter fraud happens

We can't really:

"Liberal groups often claim that known instances of voter fraud are inconsequential when compared to the total number of ballots cast in American elections. However, as the National Commission on Federal Election Reform has stated, the problem “is not the magnitude of voter fraud. In close or disputed elections, and there are many, a small amount of fraud could make the margin of difference.” The U.S. Supreme Court has concurred with this assessment, noting that known instances of fraud “demonstrate that not only is the risk of voter fraud real but that it could affect the outcome of a close election.”

Indeed, recent elections bear this out. In 2015, a city council election in the New Jersey town of Perth Amboy was decided by a mere 10 votes. A judge overturned the election and ordered a new one after it was revealed that at least 13 illegal absentee ballots had been cast. The 2003 mayoral primary in East Chicago, Indiana, was overturned by the state Supreme Court after evidence of widespread fraud was revealed. The new election resulted in a different winner. Numerous convictions for election fraud resulted from this election, and are documented in   The Heritage Foundation’s Voter Fraud Database ."

Does the phrase:  Argument from ignorance  mean anything to this statement?

It would appear that it applies more directly to an affirmation about the amount of voter fraud.

The Republicans are trying to use a handful of fraudulent voters to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of eligible voters. They do this because they have studied voter data and know when black and minority voters tend to vote, what identification they are most likely to have or not have

Seeder, I have already made my case. I even inserted a misquided republican as evidence that we democrats know all about his case.

Observe that you, yourself, in your heritage foundation linked quote "Liberal groups often claim that known instances of voter fraud are inconsequential when compared to the total number of ballots cast in American elections." dispute this article writer's opening sentence above:

"We are told by so many on the left that ballot tampering and election fraud does not occur.

Your hard right response is from the Heritage Foundation. Of course, they would remark on a mosquito that drank from a democrat - eating an entire horse if they can get away with it!

In an imperfect world, you will have cavalier losers who will try anything one, several, even a 'thousand' times, still you won't get to blow it all out of context and proportions.

LMAO.

I was waiting for you to respond.
From July of 2016 (Part of the GOP Platform)
This is just for you:

The Republican Party's platform formally endorses laws requiring voters to show identification when they cast ballots.

The new provision inserts the national party into a contentious debate over voter access at a time when several states are tightening identification requirements.

The party platform, adopted unanimously by delegates in Cleveland on Monday, goes farther than language that had been included in earlier years. The party "support[s] legislation to require proof of citizenship when registering to vote and secure photo ID when voting,"   the document reads .

Four years ago,   the GOP platform   "applaud[ed] legislation to require photo identification for voting and to prevent election fraud."

The stronger language comes ahead of a presidential election in which 12 states — including swing states like Wisconsin, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia — will enforce voter identification laws for the first time.

"This is part of a broader move to curtail voting rights, which began after the 2010 election, when state lawmakers nationwide started introducing hundreds of harsh measures making it harder to vote," wrote the Brennan Center for Justice, which opposes many of the new laws.

Thirty-three states will require voters to show proof of identification in November, according to the   National Conference of State Legislatures . The laws vary widely by state: In Texas, a state with one of the stricter requirements, voters must show one of six types of government-issued photo identifications, ranging from a passport to a license to carry a concealed handgun.

In Delaware, voters are asked to show documents ranging from a photo identification to a utility bill or paycheck; someone without proof of identity may still cast a ballot if he or she signs an affidavit affirming their identity.

The debate over laws requiring voters to show identification has deepened along partisan lines in recent years, after Republicans claimed control of a record number of state legislative chambers after the 2010 and 2014 elections. Democrats, who say identification laws disproportionally impact low-income, minority and elderly voters, have sued over newly restrictive laws in states like North Carolina, Virginia and Texas.

Republicans say the laws help ensure the integrity of elections, though no cases of widespread voter fraud have come to light in recent years.

The 2016 Republican platform also encourages states to join the Interstate Voter Registration Cross Check Program, a pilot plan run by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R). The program cross-references voter rolls among its 28 member states, looking for identical names and date-of-birth matches to eliminate any duplicates.

That program came under fire in 2013, however, when Virginia's state Board of Elections used it to remove tens of thousands of names from its rolls.

Kobach, perhaps the GOP's leading voice   defending voter identification laws , was a member of the Republican Platform Committee in 2016. Kobach's office is currently embroiled in a legal fight with the Department of Justice over a Kansas law requiring voters to show proof of citizenship when they vote; the law could prevent an estimated 17,000 Kansas voters from casting ballots in local elections, even though they could still vote in federal races.

The Republican platform says the party "strongly oppose[s] litigation against states exercising their sovereign authority to enact" laws requiring both proof of citizenship and voter identification.

A draft of the Democratic Party's   proposed platform , on which delegates will vote next week in Philadelphia, calls for overturning voter identification laws and reinstating "the full protections of the Voting Rights Act," portions of which the Supreme Court struck down in 2015.

"[W]e will continue to fight against discriminatory voter identification laws, which disproportionately burden young voters, diverse communities, people of color, low-income families, people with disabilities, the elderly, and women," the draft says. "Republicans have enacted various voter suppression tactics from Ohio to Florida, and while some Federal Courts have found that these measures go too far, Democrats will continue to fight these laws to preserve the fundamental right to vote."

Not all voting rights issues have broken down strictly along partisan lines. Four states — liberal Vermont, Oregon and California and conservative West Virginia — have passed measures in recent years that automatically register eligible citizens to vote. In those states, voting rolls have swelled ahead of November's elections; in California, where Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed automatic registration into law last year, voter rolls jumped by more than 600,000 in just the first few months of 2016.
