WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three people including a four-year-old girl were shot in New York City's Times Square after gunfire broke out in a dispute that they were apparently not involved in, the city's top police official said Saturday.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said a family from Brooklyn had brought the child to Times Square to buy toys. Shea told reporters gathered at Times Square that she and the two other victims - a 23-year-old female tourist from Rhode Island and a 43-year-old woman from New Jersey - did not appear related to one another or to the shooting itself.

"It appears that all three are innocent bystanders," Shea said.

Shea said police had "one person of interest" that they were seeking information from but no indication yet as to the context of the dispute, which he said broke out between "two to four people" just before 5 p.m.

Shea did not provide details on the conditions of the victims but said that the 4-year-old and 23-year-old were shot in the leg; he said the 43-year-old was shot in the foot.

Crime rates have jumped in New York and other American cities in the past year; explanations for the surge vary.

In the 1970s and '80s Times Square had a reputation for seediness, an aura that has all but vanished in the 21st Century as soaring property values, gentrification and a plummeting crime rate turned it into a tourist playground.

A while ago, when I commented on the event when a lot of people in NYC's Times Square RAN AND HID when they heard a motorcycle backfiring, I was criticized for it.  Obviously the people who ran and hid did the right thing, even though it was a false alarm.  So what do my critics have to say to me today?

Meh, only newsworthy because of the location.

True enough.  It's not news any more, it's no different than eating a meal or going to work or school - so what else is new, eh?  The only reason I posted it was to justify what I had said a while ago when people in Times Square ran and hid when they heard a motorcycle backfire.

The fact that it's not news anymore should be a huge headline in and of itself.

I remember August 1969, had just returned from a 16 month tour in Vietnam and a car backfired.  In my parents living room I ducked.

My father was in WW2, Normandy Invasion.  He knew exactly why that happened.

Just the other day a 6th grader took a gun to school and wounded three kids.

We get them started young in the US.

The fact that a kid took a gun to school is just ho-hum.  The fact that he didn't kill anyone IS news.

Remember the days when one person screwed up everyone had their toys taken away?

Well, Second Amendment and all of that-----are Americans really mature enough----or responsible enough-----anymore?

All in all, I wonder if the easy access to weapons in the long run causes too many people to be cowards, too thin skinned and causes too many to believe they are far more important than they are?
