RETURN OF THE CLASSIC MOVIE QUIZ
RETURN OF THE CLASSIC MOVIE QUIZ
PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS, ANY MOVIE OR ACTOR NAMES, IMAGES, MOVIE QUOTES OR EVEN A HINT IN A COMMENT, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE. POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.
Don't forget that I am on the other side of the world (of most of you) and I could be asleep when you send your answers, so be patient - I will get to your PN as soon as I can.
PLEASE, PLEASE, READ WHAT IS BELOW FIRST AND FOLLOW THE RULES IN ORDER TO GET FULL MARKS FOR YOUR ANSWERS. THIS QUIZ IS MORE LIKE THE ORIGINAL QUIZZES, RATHER THAN THE GAMES.
For the answer to be correct, it is REQUIRED that it MUST be a movie on the linked SPECIFIC Harper’s Bazaar “THE BEST CLASSIC MOVIES OF ALL TIME” list located just below this paragraph. IT MUST BE THE ONE THAT LISTS 70 MOVIES . The visual clues represent a scenario or image that may be relevant to a scene in the movie or to the movie title or something important about the movie or what you may have remembered from watching the movie. I have seen all of the movies on this quiz, and since these are famous classic movies I will assume that you will have seen most if not all of them. I don't think any of the clues are actual screen shots from the movies and I might have used a few of them for previous games or quizzes. I try to use clues that do not make it easy to do a web search, and using google or web programs that identify movies from the clues is cheating. The real challenge and fun of the quiz is using the visual clues to identify the movies.
LINK TO LIST -> 70 Best Classic Movies 2024 - Top Old Movies to Watch
There are other Harper’s Bazaar Classic Movie lists so IT IS NECESSARY to use ONLY the one that is linked above.
Note that I (almost) never use the same movie more than once in the same game. I said "almost" because I mistakenly actually DID use the same movie twice in the Pirate Movie Game, but caught it and replaced it when I got the first submission.
THE RULES
I am being fairly lenient in my scoring, and not overly concerned about spelling mistakes, obvious typos, punctuation, capitalizing or leaving out or adding an extraneous "A" or "The", but especially if you guess the answer you should check the movie name on the linked lists or web to make sure it is the full and correct name. For example, and this will be important for all my quizzes, you will lose a half mark if you make the title one word if it is two, or two words when it is only one because that means to me that you are not sure of the title and you never checked your answer with the list to make sure it is correct. Just identifying the image does not necessarily mean that you know the name of the movie. That is only one of the reasons why it is important for you to check your answers with the lists to make sure they are correct. I can't believe how many times players do not bother and then lose score. As well, if you can convince me that my clues are equally as relevant for or better indicative of a movie other than the one I've chosen, provided it is one of the movies on the IMDb lists linked above, I will accept that alternative as a good answer. Previously I did accept alternative movies for the questions.
Please also send only one answer for each question - I cannot score it if you provide more than one movie name per question.
A few who played the quizzes previously quit because of the rules. But I wish to ask if there is a quiz that does NOT have rules that must be followed?
A few times now a situation came up previously where the movie list link I used came up with a different name than the one the participant got when they opened that same movie name although it was the same link, so if that happens, and usually it is a foreign movie, please tell me when I score your answers
Please number your answers the same as the questions.

The return of the movie quiz, and Dune is not a hint for an answer. There is just too much political news overwhelming the internet and it’s time to take a break from it with a challenge that is fun, a worthy distraction from what has become the same old same old on NT.
No longer a simple game, but this time I’m giving you the challenge of a real quiz, and to succeed you will need to use your knowledge of the greatest of the classic movies, logic or just plain common sense. Some of the questions may be really easy and some may be hard, especially if you’ve not seen the movies, but no matter what, take your mind away from the news and the politics and let’s see what you’ve got. However, as always,
PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS, ANY MOVIE OR ACTOR NAMES, IMAGES, MOVIE QUOTES OR EVEN A HINT IN A COMMENT, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE. POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.
This quiz will be closed and the winners announced on Tuesday, February 25th at 10 p.m. New York City time.
Sounds good!
Looks good as well.
Alright
Yes it is.
Looking forward to trying!
Looking forward to your efforts.
Woo Hoo!!! looking forward to starting
Looking forward to your completing.
Apparently I haven't seen many older movies and if I did see it, it was just once and the clues may not help me much. But try I will.
That's the spirit!
Looks Good. I love a Challenge.
Success is sweeter when you overcome a challenge.
Submitted.
First one to give it a try. Thanks for your submission.
I have a few answers and thinking on rest
Now you have the weekend to think about it.
NOTICE TO INTENDING PARTICIPANTS
This quiz will be closed exactly 3 days from now, i.e. Tuesday February 25 at 10 p.m. New York City time. Some have said they will participate, but only one has done so.
Notwithstanding 10 likes and this being the 19th comment the quiz is no longer visible unless this comment brings it back temporarily. As well, with only one participant in 3 days, I guess I was premature in bothering to post it.
Answered & submitted.
I don't know if it is because I am out of practice or if it was a really difficult quiz, but I found this one to be very challenging, but enjoyable. Thank you.
Received and scored. I'm glad you enjoyed the challenge - I wish more members would enjoy the challenge of my movie quizzes even a small bit as much as they devote themselves to arguing about politics.
Out of practice or harder, I am stuck on a few. I will turn something in.
Thanks to Buzz for making something fun and a challenge
You still have a couple of days. Do some research on the internet.
Submitted, it was a bit more challenging so I have to admit that there are a few guesses.
Received and scored with thanks. Yes, it was a lot more challenging than the games I had been posting, but it's a sign of good and strong character to do one's best in meeting a challenge.
This needs to be bumped up a little higher.
We finally got better weather today, it was sunny and near 50 F, quite a contrast from the weather we've be having since last year, single digits to low 20's and on those warm days snow.
Yes, a very nice and enjoyable day
Agreed
This has been the worst winter we've had in Chongqing - no snow and ice but cold and dreary, lots of rain.
I'm hoping for one so we can get out for a walk.
Now that the quiz is at the top of the Front (Home) Page, I hope it will be a reminder to those who intended to participate since there is only a very little more than one more day to submit their answers. All of the questions have been answered by one participant or another, so none of them is impossible.
Sent in more guesses than answers. Had to go with what I could come up with because tomorrow looks to be a busy day. The format of the list added to difficulty, but I pushed through it

Received and scored. Thank you. No, you had more correct answers than guesses. I didn't like the format of the list or the length of the movie descriptions myself, but it was the best list I could find for this type of quiz.
Submitted. A few guesses here, there were a few movies that I had not seen or saw a long time ago. But it was a lot of fun. Thanks Buzz.
Received and scored with thanks, and you're welcome.
My brain is bleeding from this quiz. I haven't seen a lot of these movies
Thanks for participating, sorry that it injured you.
FIVE HOURS LEFT BEFORE CLOSING. As the poster held by the religious fanatic said about the end of the world coming, "THERE'S STILL TIME BROTHER".
Got 7, was really hoping for at least 8.
Get you quiz in
As in the title to a Leonard Cohen song, It’s Closing Time, but for this quiz no Hallelujah – only 7 participated. We do have a big winner, first in and a perfect score 20 for Dig. In second ;place is Snuffy with 19 and for third place Kathleen achieved 18. Honourable Mention goes to Veronica with 16.
Some of the clues virtually shouted out the answer, such as the seven samurai swords or the graduation cap and diploma, while some others DID need the knowledge of having seen the movies along with a memory for details. The most difficult for most was Double Indemnity, followed by The Third Man and The Godfather.
I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find a list that would be of similar well-known movies for a repeat of this kind of quiz, but if I can’t, I’ll revert to the movie game wherein one could get a perfect score without having seen any of the movies or even know the stories, but still will provide some challenge as a diversion from the present monumental political bullshit .
And for those who knew not what it takes to meet the challenge and have the fun, the answers and clues:
10. 2001: A Space Odyssey – Jupiter
11. The Sound of Music – 7 children from one family
12. The Graduate – a graduation cap and diploma
13. The Grapes of Wrath – an overloaded truck
14. The Wizard of Oz – a tornado
15. Casablanca – a bottle of Vichy water
16. An American in Paris – the Eiffel Tower
17. Roman Holiday – a woman driving a motor scooter
18. Sunset Boulevard – a sunset
19. Seven Samurai – 7 samurai swords
20. 12 Angry Men – a jury room
The first four I would've never got and since you don't double up on movies that made ones further down wrong and the same with #9 and I have watched that one several times and I never made the connection. Oh well last place isn't so bad. Making it more challenging actually would make it more interesting for me, it tends to spread out the winners circle.
You were not in last place.
The Cool Hand Luke eggs connection was important enough to be featured on a movie poster for the film.
And I thought it was for Hard Boiled Detectives
LOL
Sorry I missed this quiz. It's good to see some old friends still playing.
What I couldn't understand is that you didn't participate after having posted the first comment after my opening comment.
Congrats Dig, you beat me by 1. I consider my score rather good as I did have several guesses.
Congrats to all who played, it was a fun game.
Thanks Buzz.
You're welcome Snuffy. I appreciate your constant loyalty to and support of the Movie Quiz/Game. Everyone who plays says it is fun, which is why I can't understand why more members don't play. I guess many get their fun from taunting and trolling other members, and others don't watch movies. I take note of what bccrane said above that the challenging format of a quiz spreads out the winners' circle. My problem is that it will be really difficult to find another list with movies that most would have seen in order to create a quiz rather than a game.
I don't do movie quizzes because I haven't actually watched a movie in many years.
Occasionally I've looked at the clues and a movie came to mind.
So far, of all the movie quizzes on NT, I only guessed 4. (But 3 of those were movies I never even saw!)
Years ago I went to the movies a lot, but I think I mostly stopped going a long time ago-- maybe as far back as the 1970s!
Since the advent of VHS...
If I remember correctly, the video rental stores rented VHS tapes, and we often would use them. I have to tell you about one embarrassing time I did it. It was my son's 10th birthday and we had over to the house a lot of the neighbour's young boys. I rented what appeared to me from the cover to be a fun Sci-Fi movie for them that I had not seen. So I put on the movie for the kids and left the house for a while. When we returned they were all wide-eyed and open-mouthed watching that movie and I saw why. I had rented Amazon Women on the Moon and had no idea that it would show a bunch of bare-breasted women running around. I don't need to tell you what the neighbourhood women thought of me after that, but the men considered me to be a hero.
On this quiz you didn't have to see the movies to know that The Graduate and Seven Samurai were the answers. You didn't even have to look at the list for those. You just had to say what the clues represented.
I think that the most recent movie on the list I posted was 1975.
