3 1/2 years. I hope that display he put on inside the Senate chamber was worth it.

Prosecutors initially asked for a 54 month sentence.  I see he was given the same sentence as Scott Fairlamb (the MMA fighter).  I always thought that Fairlamb should have gotten a larger sentence as he actually attacked a Capital policeman. All this guy did was be visible and be an ass.  IMO the two being given the same sentence is not right.

It is not a legitimate sentence.  It needs to be repealed and reduced by about 75%. It was a gross miscarriage of Justice in this case.

He was with a group of people that attempted to overthrow our duly elected government.  Sentence needs to be increased as a warning to anyone in the future that feels the urge to overthrow the government.

Everyone there illegally should be given jail time, some more, some less, but all some time locked up.

I think it's because he became one of the 'faces' of all that ugliness - someone that really stood out (and made sure he stood out) that has been recognized and should be punished harshly.

I think the ones who assaulted those cops should get the harshest/longest sentences though.

Holy cow! Before this I never imagined that you could say something I could agree with, yet you have. I'll have to reevaluate the likelihood of unicorns existing. I completely agree that his sentence was not due to anything he actually did but, rather, for political purposes. He did no violence. Assaulted no one. Committed no vandalism. He is guilty of being a trespassing doofus and that's about it, yet he got over three years in prison. Politics, not justice, was served here.

I also agree that those who assaulted cops should have gotten the harshest sentences.

“I was wrong for entering the Capitol, I have no excuse whatsoever,” Mr. Chansley said in a half-hour speech in which he referenced Gandhi and the film “Shawshank Redemption,” touching on his father’s suicide, his tattoos, and his distrust of the media. “I am in no way or shape a dangerous criminal. I am a good man who broke the law,” said Mr. Chansley, who was the first person to be indicted in connection with the riot.

I believe Jacob Chansley is mentally ill.
