President Biden on Tuesday released a lengthy statement in response to the leak of a draft opinion that suggests the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

On Monday night, Politico published the draft of a majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito in which he states that "Roe was egregiously wrong from the start."

"We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled," Alito writes, referencing the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey case that reaffirmed Roe. "It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people's elected representatives."

"We do not know whether this draft is genuine, or whether it reflects the final decision of the Court," Biden said in his statement. "With that critical caveat, I want to be clear on three points about the cases before the Supreme Court.

"First, my administration argued strongly before the Court in defense of Roe v. Wade," Biden continued. "We said that Roe is based on 'a long line of precedent recognizing 'the Fourteenth Amendment's concept of personal liberty'… against government interference with intensely personal decisions.' I believe that a woman's right to choose is fundamental, Roe has been the law of the land for almost fifty years, and basic fairness and the stability of our law demand that it not be overturned.

"Second, shortly after the enactment of Texas law SB 8 and other laws restricting women's reproductive rights, I directed my Gender Policy Council and White House Counsel's Office to prepare options for an Administration response to the continued attack on abortion and reproductive rights, under a variety of possible outcomes in the cases pending before the Supreme Court. We will be ready when any ruling is issued.

"Third, if the Court does overturn Roe, it will fall on our nation's elected officials at all levels of government to protect a woman's right to choose. And it will fall on voters to elect pro-choice officials this November. At the federal level, we will need more pro-choice Senators and a pro-choice majority in the House to adopt legislation that codifies Roe, which I will work to pass and sign into law."

With everything going so swell for the Biden Administration (plenty of job creation, rising wages, spectacularly high inflation, control of the border, etc.) why would there be any need to 'rally" Democrats?

Are you afraid that the Biden economy you touted as wonderful isn't as rosy as you tried to get people to believe?

About 75% support enforcing immigration laws at the border too, but I don't see you crying about Democrats doing virtually nothing about it, so what exactly is your point?

BTW, the Court's job isn't to rule like the majority wants, and some of us learned that in school many, many years ago.

That belief seems to be shared by many on the left.  I believe Chuck Todd said "We already know where the midterms are headed at this point, it's either going to be bad or catastrophic," just a couple of weeks ago.  Unless this issue turns out to be important enough to voters so that it overrides all other issues there is no reason to believe that is going to change too much.

You don't think the cost of additional children will effect their wallets?

You don't think the cost of having to travel to a state that supports women's right to get an abortion will effect their wallet?

There were 862,000 abortions performed, in the US, in 2017 and around 630,000 in 2019.  That's a LOT of wallets being effected every year.

Making terminations illegal does not mean that there will necessarily be less abortions because the demand for termination services is dictated by the incidence of unwanted pregnancies. Well, gee, let's look at the FACT.

Fact: The GOP doesn't have the majority in the House or Senate--and you have assured all that NO WAY the GOP can win in November, so why the angst?

Are you SO unsure of your glorious predictions for the midterms that you aren't confident that a Democratic majority (which you have insisted will be in place after the midterms) can't manage to stop the minority from passing legislation?

That make ZERO sense.

That or you must believe the Democratic Party to be bumbling FOOLS, incapable of passing their own legislation while in the majority and too inept to prevent the minority from running roughshod over them.

Which is it now?

What Does the Bible Really Say About Abortion?

The Bible isn’t ‘pro-life’ — and the Old Testament God isn’t ‘more violent’ than the New one

The problem with trying to use the bible to prove pro-life is that the bible (and christian god) are very pro-abortion.  And no, I do not mean pro-choice, I mean pro-abortion (forced abortion against the woman's choice).

No surprise there. The 'party of Lincoln' has become the potty of Trump, and their worship, or perhaps fear, of Trump will come back to haunt them in the near future.

However, it is true that not all Republicans have sold their souls to Trump, and they will soon retake their party and regain the ideals and respect the party once had. Failing that, there will be a new party to take its place that will see the end of the Potty of Trump and will represent the real Republican policies and ideals.

I was once a Republican, but, no longer am due to the disgusting deterioration of the original party's support of America and its people, and what is best for both. I look forward to the day the Potty of Trump and his ass wipes are no longer a threat to our country.

Or, that his wife Ginnie helped to organize Trump's January 6th insurrection!

A more popular term today is "Race Traitors"

Among neo-Nazis and those that share race based view of the world, yes.

I would prefer to talk about if that was what the seed was about, but since it isn't, it seems like just you that is deflecting and derailing.

What's next--talking about Trump again?

Sigh.

And that matters....how...?

I'm confused how one person's misogyny is somehow legitimized by somebody else's misogyny.  How does that work, exactly?

Please tell me you're not devolving into some batshit tribalist who defends anything, no matter how egregious, simply because the person in question is part of "Team Lefty".

And you seem to forget I was defending Dev's freedom of speech. We still have free speech, don't we? Or is it free if it doesn't offend your sensibilities?

Ah, so we're going full melodrama on the tribalism, as well.  That's disappointing.

You seem to forget, we're on a forum.   When somebody posts misogynistic bullshit, they deserve to be challenged.  He has the right to post what he wants and you have the right to defend him, no matter how dickheaded his comments are.

But the rest of us have the right to call you out on it.

You would have given him grief too if he was conservative.  Again...rightfully so.

Well.  That's the issue.  Misogyny isn't OK just because the perpetrator belongs to one political tribe or another.

I think that's the nicest thing you ever said to me, Jack. Thanks

I really don't feel like it is, but I don't have concrete examples to hand.  In any case, it's not my opinion on the subject that matters, and I will certainly endeavor to improve in this area.

Reading all the freak out comments on this is hilarious!

This is a DRAFT.  This can change drastically before it's signed and published.  For all any of us know there is an apposing draft floating around out there.  Hell, this very draft could be the opposing draft.

So...   when does the Catholic Church come to Biden and ask for his membership card back?  After all the position the Church has on abortion is well known...

  • The Catholic Church states that abortion is  always wrong , because life begins at conception and is God given.
  • This means that in the eyes of the Catholic Church abortion is classed as  murder  and goes against the commandment,  Thou shalt not kill  (Exodus 20:13). This commandment is reiterated by Jesus in Matthew 19:18.

Catholics do not have to agree with every precept of the Church to remain Catholics.

I am Catholic and I do oppose abortion done as a convenience. But I realize I dont have the right to dictate to other people what they have to do on this subject. It is a personal choice by the women and those she gives agency to.

Doesnt make me a bad Catholic. There is no Church law that says unless you fight to outlaw abortion you cant be a Catholic.

Yes, a lot of Catholics as well as a lot of other people believe that people should deal with their own consciences and stop butting in to their neighbors issues.  But it is the official policy of the Catholic Church and Biden is on record as saying he is a devout Catholic.  He makes the sign of the cross at public events, and his Catholicism is woven into his speeches and policies. Years ago he cited his religious faith when wondering out loud if Roe v Wade went too far,  now he's fully pro-abortion.  Even some bishops are on record saying that Biden should be denied the Eucharist due to his views on reproductive rights.  He seems to be wanting his cake and to eat it too.

I'm waiting for the main event between Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis. That should be a doozie.

In the left corner from the Vatican and weighing in at 195 lbs (including robes and assorted regalia) The ''Mean Machine'' from Rome......Pope Francis the Fearless.

And in the right corner from Moscow, Russia and weighing in at 240 lbs (including beard and assorted trinkets) the pride of Saint Peterburg, the Russian Mauler, Patriarch Kirill the Kruncher.

Wine and wafers will be served following the match.
