SAN ANTONIO — More than 40 migrants were found dead Monday in the trailer of a big-rig truck in San Antonio, authorities said.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said that at least 46 people were dead and that 16, including four children, had been hospitalized.

The victims were males and females, many of them young adults, officials said.

Three people have been taken into custody, San Antonio Police Chief William P. McManus said.

The grim discovery was made early Monday evening in an undeveloped area of southwest San Antonio near the railroad tracks. Someone who works in the area reported hearing a cry for help and spotted at least one body, officials said.

"We're not supposed to open up a truck and see stacks of bodies in there," Hood said.

McManus said the survivors lacked water and air conditioning. "The patients that we saw were hot to the touch," he said.

McManus said Homeland Security Investigations has taken over the investigation. The heat is likely to be a focus — temperatures climbed to 101 on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat inside a trailer packed with people was likely to have been significantly higher than the outside temperature.

A committee of the National Association of Medical Examiners has recommended that bodies with temperatures of 105 or greater at the time of collapse be certified as heat-related deaths.

In 2017, 10 migrants died in a packed truck carrying 39 people in San Antonio in the heat of summer.

Driver James Matthew Bradley Jr., 60, of Clearwater, Florida, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and transporting migrants, although his wife said he did not know people were in the trailer.

This is a developing story; check back for updates.

The death toll has now climbed to 50.  They paid thousands of dollars to die a horrible death.

What a terrible tragedy.

Maybe this will stop the president and congress from tolerating, or even encouraging, human smuggling.

I don't think so.

I'm trying to understand the "logic" being voiced here,  So loosening the immigration restrictions, increasing the numbers and making immigration easier is the cause of smuggling migrants?  Please explain, because I just don't get it.  By the way, while you're at it, have they found the parents of all the children your hero separated from their parents and put in cages like animals yet?

Why should it? They have no problem with the thousand upon thousands of fentanyl overdoses caused by the open border they have created

Yeah, what is it about such a superior country wherein so many people feel compelled to mentally escape from their lives?

Well, it probably all started when being a social justice warrior became a thing, and when we started giving out participation trophies and blaming society for individual's actions.

Hundreds are dying in the border area deserts as well.

We don't know the real numbers.  GAO published a report in Apr:

In September 2021, Border Patrol issued procedures to, among other things, help standardize how the agency tracks reports of deceased migrants. But Border Patrol hasn't collected or recorded complete data on migrant deaths and does not have a plan to evaluate how the program is working. We recommended that Border Patrol address these issues.
