The cost of hatred and history: Holocaust victims and perpetrators can never be forgotten

What is there to say about an anniversary like today's International Holocaust Remembrance Day, falling on the date when the Red Army entered a camp in occupied Poland that the fleeing Germans called Auschwitz? That the Nazis were villains? That a million Jews were murdered there and millions more were murdered elsewhere across Europe by the Germans? That we can never forget?
But we risk forgetting when Vladimir Putin's propaganda claims that the Ukrainians defending their freedom are Nazis (even though the popularly elected Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is a Jew). Putin is trying to stir old memories of antisemitic Ukrainians who did collaborate with German invaders in WWII, but it only demeans history.

We risk forgetting when Moscow calls today's democratic German government Nazis, which is laughable as Berlin is so timid of using military force that they tried in every way not to send needed tanks for Ukraine's defense.
And we risk forgetting when a Holocaust denier like the putrid Nick Fuentes can be a dinner guest at the table of a former U.S. president.
We must not forget, as antisemitism persists and hatred and ignorance abound.
More than a year ago, Reps. Jerry Nadler, Hakeem Jeffries and Greg Meeks wrote to Secretary of State Tony Blinken to demand answers as to why the State Department under Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama refused to deport back to Europe death camp guards and other Nazi persecutors that the Department of Justice had discovered here and won court orders for their removal.
The diplomats still haven't responded. Now, joining the call for accountability and truth is freshman Rep. Dan Goldman, a former DOJ prosecutor himself.
Blinken must supply the answers. We note that his stepfather, the late Sam Pisar, was an Auschwitz survivor and his sister, Leah Pisar, sits on the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Maybe she can ask her brother to order the files opened up.
Nearly 80 years after WWII, the final chapters of the Holocaust are still being written.

That we can never forget
I have been to Auschwitz-Birkenau and even though I have seen every documentary regarding the Holocaust they did not prepare me for the dark horror that flooded my being. “You also had some very fine people on both sides” reawakened that horror 10 years later.
Sounds like another 1619 project. Those who perpetrated the Holocaust have reformed themselves. And those who liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau and ended the Holocaust in Poland are the enemy.
We're supposed to believe that the Holocaust hasn't been forgotten?
Not sure what you are trying to say but it doesnt sound good.
You seem to forget that the Soviets stood idly by while the German forces levelled Warsaw, a purely political move by Stalin who saw Eastern Europe as a gift bag. This was presaged by the Katyn massacre.
The type of people who perpetrated the Holocaust havent reformed themselves, they're just not in power any more.
Seems like the Soviets weren't alone. No one stopped the German Nazis invading Poland. The British Commonwealth traded Austria for a promise of peace and took no action to defend Poland until it was too late.
Except in Ukraine.
They are doing everything in their power to get back in, the modern 5th column is alive and well ... just ask Steve Bannon.
Comment 2.2.3 is straight out of the Putin propaganda playbook. Imagine calling a Zelensky, a Jew, "the type of people who perpetrated the Holocaust".
Are you suggesting that Zelensky is a Jewish Nazi ?
Your apologetics is wanting of a new religion.
That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard and I've heard a lot of stupid things in my life
Jews worked in the gas chambers at Birkenau. Jews worked in the crematorium at Birkenau. Were they Nazis?
Pay was great and vacation time was generous ... and the Health Plan? Oy Vey! /S
You are starting to look like someone who is a religious fan of the Jimmy Dore Show.
Uh, I think they were forced to.
No John, it was strictly on a volunteer basis.
Disgusting to see someone defending Putin and Nazi's while blaming the victims of genocide, but I guess that's just another casual Friday for many worthless piece of shit anti-Semites, bigots, impotent fascist incel internet trolls and neo-Nazi's these days.
Uh Huh! I'm sure you only watched to see Sue Upton prance about.
Who is defending Putin and Nazis? I'm pointing out that the graphic novel style of historical narrative only serves those who troll.
The Soviet Red Army ended the Holocaust in Poland. The Soviet Red Army liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau. The idea that the United States ended the Holocaust is not historically accurate.
Ukraine participated in the Holocaust. Some of that participation was unwilling but some was also willing participation.
In 1940 the Katyn Forest massacre took place where the Russians slaughtered 22,000 Polish Military Officers and Polish intellectuals. The Russians were responsible for the deaths of millions under Stalin. Which would include four million Ukrainians by starvation in what is known as the Holomador.
Without the lend-lease of US to Russia, Russia may not have survived the German onslaught. To say that the Russians liberated Auschwitz is stretching reality to the breaking point. After the so-called liberation, the Russians subjugated Poland and the Polish people for decades. Remember it was Poland that started the downfall of the Russian empire which Putin is attempting to rebuild.
If that is your criteria then you would have to add Italy, France, Hungry, Romania, and numerous other countries to your list of Holocaust participants.
So, the oversimplified, graphic novel style of narrative doesn't capture the complexity and nuance of the real history. That simplified telling of history only appeals to the morally indolent and provides a self-serving rationale.
Sounds like another 1619 project.
Bullshit.
The word, translated to English, is Azov. And the emblem is a stylized swastika.
The choice in Ukraine was between collective socialism under the Communist model or national socialism under the Nazi model. The war in Donbas (using the oversimplified graphic novel style) has been a conflict between collective socialism and national socialism. The nationalists are Nazis and the collectivists are Communists.
Zelensky is an ultra-nationalist which places him in the Nazi camp.
I know exactly what the word and symbol are without the need of any explanation from you.
The rest of your comment is ahistorical nonsense and more complete bullshit.
They're now called Neo-Nazis.
That's not a reformation..that's just putting on new underwear
That's the
" I want that man thrown out of a window...NOW!"
