The Trump Administration Demands Gratitude From Another US Ally

The most successful presidential administrations tend to be those that look forward to the nation's future. Sometimes, that forward-looking vision is born out of a crisis, like a war or a failing economy.

Other times, presidents have a vision and have been willing to try to implement it to take the nation forward. JFK had a vision, and so did Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan.

The presidential administrations that usually fail are those that are stuck in the past or spend their time spinning their wheels trying to gin up an aurora of success where there is none.

The United States has never seen an administration that is as stuck in the past as the second go around in the presidency of Donald Trump.

Last week at the Department of Justice, Trump ranted about the legal cases against him and the fact that he was criminally charged. Trump also declared media that criticizes him, like CNN and MSNBC, to be illegal.

At the White House Press Briefing on Monday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt took this obsession with the past to a new level by demanding gratitude from France.

Fox's Peter Doocy asked Leavitt, "There is now a member of the European Parliament from France who does not think the U. S. represents the values of the Statue of Liberty anymore. They want the Statue of Liberty back. So is President Trump going to send the Statue of Liberty back to France?"

Leavitt answered, "Absolutely not. And, my advice to that unnamed, low-level French politician would be to remind them that it's only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now. So, they should be very grateful to our great country."

Americans would still be colonists if it were not for the French during the Revolutionary War, so two can play that game.

We don't spend much time in this space talking about the White House press briefing because the briefing has become unserious people asking unserious questions.

The attitude and the the view that the administration sees America's historical allies through that deserves a closer look.

I guess France could thank Franklin Roosevelt and the greatest generation for saving them 80-85 years ago, but I suspect they already have. As far as Karoline Leavitt demanding an apology France should tell her to go fuck herself and her boss.

Instead of being ashamed that people in France want the statue of liberty back the Trump administration is asking why this is happening.

I read this looking for a satire tag....  Just how many people does Trump need to be constantly stroking his "ego"???

I would like Karoline Leavitt and Trump to apologize to me and every other American for what they are doing to our country.

So Karoline Leavitt said "...it's only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now."  As a Canadian whose older cousin who was a bomber navigator for the RCAF in WW2, in a bomber that was shot down with all its crew killed over Germany, and whose uncle qnd older cousins were with the Canadian army in Europe, I RESENT that "ONLY" word.

Every year, all across France, D-Day is commemorated. D-Day may be more significant - better know - to the French than to Americans, since it was the beginning of the Liberation. This has been going on since the end of WWII.

So... Trump already has what he requested... but as so often, his ignorance is transcendant!

Oh, and... Yorktown??

Trump continues to embarrass our nation.   How on Earth could people vote for such an irresponsible asshole?

What a misleading dishonest title:

Fox's Peter Doocy asked Leavitt, "There is now a member of the European Parliament from France who does not think the U. S. represents the values of the Statue of Liberty anymore. They want the Statue of Liberty back. So is President Trump going to send the Statue of Liberty back to France?"

So, IN RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION the Press Secretary said:  "Absolutely not. And, my advice to that unnamed, low-level French politician would be to remind them that it's only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now. So, they should be very grateful to our great country."

It was a very good answer.
