By Mark Kinver Environment reporter, BBC News   Conservationists have launched a global campaign asking the public to help tackle the illegal trade in wildlife. They have developed a smartphone app that allows people to submit images and data of suspicious items on sale, possibly helping enforcement agencies. The United Nations estimates the illegal trade is worth billions of pounds each year. Despite efforts to crack down on the slaughter, it continues to grow,...

As we know there are many variations of ducks and one among those is scaup ducks. These scaup ducks are again divided in3to two other divisions which are greater scaup and lesser scaup ducks. The greater scaup and lesser scaup are some of the most challenging waterfowl for birders to distinguish between, and there is no single indicator that is clear for either bird. Birders who learn the many tiny differences between the two birds, however can gradually become proficient in telling them...

By Kavika Once again it's the time of the year for dog shows across the country. The Westminster Dog Show being the most famous of them all. And once again we'll see the bigotry against one of the most beautiful, faithful, courageous and popular dogs of all time. Never once in it's one hundred plus years has this popular breed every won best in show. That is criminal at the least, total bigotry at most. Today, November 24th, 2016 The National Dog Show again turned it's back on...

By Randy Snyder  The absolutely worst thing that comes along when you are owned by a pet, even as you are playing with your new puppy or kitten, is knowing somewhere in the back of your mind that it's a near certainty that you are going to live longer then them and that someday you'll have to say goodbye to them sooner or later. For me today was just such a day. My oldest Shih-Tzu, Mr. Harry (the gray one), started coughing a lot a few weeks ago. The vet said that he had a bad lung...

OK, OK, I admit that I am a dog person first and foremost. However that is not to say that should I find myself alone sometime in my older years (my wife doesn't like cats) and I find myself alone in an apartment that only allows cats that I might end up with a Black kitten to raise and to keep me company. Plus to give me something to complain about with vet bills, food, toys and cleaning the litter box. Still somehow I think I would survive as a kitten/cat owner and be quite happy! :-)...

Nonstop Flight: How The Frigatebird Can Soar For Weeks Without Stopping   CHRISTOPHER JOYCE Frigatebirds have to find ways to stay aloft because they can't land on the water. This bird was flying between the Galapagos islands of Santiago and Bartolome. Frigatebirds, seagoing fliers with a 6-foot wingspan, can stay aloft for weeks at a time, a new study has found. The results paint an astonishing picture of the bird's life, much of which is spent soaring inside...

Why North Korea is a safe haven for birds

Photos from inside North Korea reveal how the ecology of the secretive Asian country is preventing the extinction of several once plentiful species of migratory birds. Despite being closed to most foreigner visitors, North Korea may ironically be the saviour of one of the world's greatest international migration routes - the avian East Asian Australasian Flyway. Fifty million birds, from cranes to song birds, journey along the Flyway twice a year. Eight million of those are...

By STEVEN K. DNA tests have confirmed that three man-eating Nile crocodiles have been found living in Florida's swamps. Unlike local alligators, the species preys on humans and is thought to be responsible for up to 200 deaths a year at home in sub-Saharan Africa. It is possible more of the beasts are at large in the state, experts say. It is not known for certain how they reached the US. "They didn't swim from Africa," said University of Florida herpetologist Kenneth Krysko. One likely...
