This afternoon a 26-year-old former assistant showed more courage and integrity than an entire administration full of grown-ass adults who were purportedly working in service to the American people, but had long ago decided to serve only their ambition and grievance.

Cassidy Hutchinson did so at risk to her safety. Her social circle. Her career.

And she overcame all of the self-serving rationalizations that prevented the powerful, whose manhoods she held in her palm, from stepping to the plate.

It was a fitting testimony for me, seeing as it came on the day that I published Why We Did It, a book that aimed to answer the question: Why haven't there been more Cassidys?

So I wanted to offer a few thoughts on the matter.

One of the lines I borrowed when reflecting on my own journey was from Tara Westover's memoir, Educated: "Vindication has no power over guilt," she wrote.

The stories Hutchinson relayed may have offered no solace to the consciences of those of us who feel partially responsible for getting here, but they were certainly the most potent vindication imaginable.

Everything that all of us Enemies of the People had warned about concerning Donald Trump was borne out in her testimony. He was chaotic, reckless, megalomaniacal, fascistic, abusive, cowardly, petulant, anti-American.

He attacked a Secret Service officer. Sprayed ketchup across a White House wall in anger. Expressed total lack of concern for the safety of others, as long as he felt he was secure. Was completely uninterested in our democratic traditions—the political machinery that actually makes America great—and was happy to overthrow the government in order to stay in power.

What Hutchinson revealed is something we all privately knew, but now have sworn testimony of every single person around Trump saw what we saw, firsthand. And yet they did nothing.

This is why everyone I interviewed for my book was so filled with hatred for the Never Trumpers, the media, and the liberals in their life. It's because they knew we were right. And were unwilling to do anything about it. So rather than deal with their own culpability and take responsibility for themselves, they demonized those of us who spoke the truth. Because every time one of us said what they knew, out loud, it was an implicit indictment of their character.

Dealing with internalized shame is hard. Lashing out at those who make you feel bad about yourself is easy. To a man, the Trumpists took the easy path.

We also learned how these wannabe mafiosos would maintain solidarity by appealing to ambition and a demand that everyone be loyal team players.

Liz Cheney relayed testimony from another witness:

"What they said to me is, as long as I continue to be a team player, they know that I'm on the team, I'm doing the right thing, I'm protecting who I need to protect, you know, I'll continue to stay in good graces in Trump World."

With threats like these Trump maintained loyalty and preyed on the insecurities of people who decided they cared more about being invited to Mar-a-Lago for Cougarfest '22 than they cared about the country they had signed up to serve.

Today's testimony showed not only the complexes that led weak-minded men and women to go along with evil, but that they recognized this evil, full well, from the jump.

Cassidy Hutchinson found the strength to break out of this prison of the mind. She realized that she could write a different story for herself. That the enemy was not the people telling the truth about her boss. That she was not stuck on a conveyor belt. That she had responsibilities to her country. That she had agency in the execution of her duties.

That she didn't have to do it any longer.

I hope others learn from her example.

I'm glad there were staffers like her that remained until the end, DOJ officials that threatened to resign in mass, Cabinet Officers discussing the 25th Amendment.  We were lucky have had those people.

Now some are claiming that two SS agents are ready to testify to contradict her claims.  They're desperate and pathetic and deplorable.  Nothing but projection, deflection, denial, and delusion.

  • Then there should be proof of the attack on a Secret Service officer- written reports to back up what she is saying.
  • Spraying ketchup is childish; but in no way illegal.
  • Really- again she has verifiable proof of this? Outside of her own word that is.
  • He was elected because he wasn't a career politician. How is the human fuck up machine career politician that Democrats put into the Oval Office working out?
  • Again, in her opinion. She had better have proof. Liable and slander lawsuits are very nasty; and Trump has high priced powerful lawyers.

So no smoking gun yet again for the Democrats. Pitty. This time they had Trump for sure.

The committee need to call Agent Robert Engel to testify and confirm or deny the story.

Easy peasey.

If they indict them, then it will go to trial- and they will be able to call witnesses and present evidence to refute the Jan 6th testimony. The Democrats might lose in court! Careers would be ended; which is the reason the cowards haven't even bothered to try at any level. The fear of losing and what it will do to their careers is too great!

This is just more of the same BS from the partisan Jan 6th freak show.

I'm not sure that Trump will actually be charged exactly for that reason.  If he's charged and not found guilty it's an immediate career ending for the prosecution team at least.

My only hope out of this is that either Trump decides he won't run in 24 or enough Republicans decide not to give him the primary.  I hate the idea of throwing my vote away on a third party but I also cannot vote for any of the current crop of Democrats who may be running.

Sorry, the only fool is you.

Her testimony has already been refuted on one of her biggest allegations.

Two Secret Service agents are prepared to testify before Congress that then-President Trump did not lunge at a steering wheel or assault them in an attempt to go to the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot, a source close to the Secret Service tells Fox News.  The explosive new allegations were made on Tuesday by Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide to Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

Too bad, so sad. That is what you get for trusting the lying POS on the Jan 6th committee. She was a very low level employee. Most of what she testified on was hearsay and flat out wrong.

Before seeing this latest testimony I assumed that jail was the right place for the orange-haired man, but it made me think that perhaps a straight jacket would be more appropriate.  However, the correct penalty would be, taking into consideration the fact that the Republicans and their poodle SCOTUS are intent on taking America back to the Middle Ages, to banish him from America for the rest of his life.

e attacked a Secret Service officer.

Why in the world would they let her testify to hearsay without any corroboration while presumably knowing the Secret Service agent will deny the story under oath? Multiple news agencies were aware the Secret Service would deny it almost immediately.

It's like the committee wants to make itself look bad.

The part that was immediately highlighted as a blockbuster and generated the most headlines.

The J6 committee is fucking this up in so many ways. It seems they believe their job is to play to the democrats who already hate Trump and just want to generate "buzz"

If their case is as strong as they think it is, they need to bend over backwards to make it look fair. Let the Republicans have representatives they want. Let someone actually cross examine the witnesses.  Put moderate Democrats on the committee who are no easy to discredit as famously  partisan liars and election deniers. Then release all the testimony, not just the snippets that make Trump look bad.  .

And most importantly, when you have a "blockbuster witness", don't put a bullseye on her credibility by having her testify to something so easily discredited. The hour of headlines it generated isn't close to worth the damage to the committee and this witnesses' credibility.

The whole point of this exercise should be to convince moderates, particularly moderate Republicans. that Trump is not fit for office. But every step of the way the committee makes errors that makes it easy to dismiss it as a partisan witch-hunt.  Just incompetence

There were multiple blockbusters in her testimony.  I have seen articles about her testimony that dont even mention the bit about Trump attacking the agent. I wont say the allegation is irrelevant but it was no more, and probably less, important than many other things.

As far as Trumps side of the story, who the hell is stopping him?  He can go on Sean Hannity tomorrow and tell everything as he sees fit. Hannity would love it.

Of course it is doubtful Trump would give even a thimble full of detail, he would just call his opponents names.
