The First Day Of Fall Is Tomorrow, September 22, 2018
The cure for "I hate the mess of carving pumpkins!"

First day of Fall means I don't have to shave my legs regularly, I can go braless under a baggy sweater and bugs begin their return to hell where they belong. And I especially can't wait til I can snuggle up under the covers without sweating like a pregnant nun in a confessional!

I'm looking forward to be able to open the windows at night and shut off the AC. I am not a hot weather person and this summer has been like 4 months in Arizona to me. Even with the AC on I still only sleep with a cotton sheet over me.

Well, since I live in North Texas, it's still pretty damn hot. It's rainy, so it's humid too. And I'm originally from Los Angeles, so seasons were non-existent. But I love making soups on weekends, or crockpot stews. Summers are cookouts with kebobs and steaks and burgers. I bake a lot more in fall and winter too.

I moved to Texas in mid-July several years ago. In Los Angeles, no matter how hot it is outside, if you open your windows  during the evening you get an ocean breeze. Not strong, but it can be felt. Out of habit, my first night here, I flung open the window to let some air in. Holy shit. It was a like a brick wall of stifling heat. I hadn't realized the proximity of a beach had every effect on the amount of air circulating. I prefer to have considered myself naive rather than stupid. But that was pretty stupid of me to expect to feel any type of circulation.

Seems this babe got hurt previously on "Doomsday Preppers" ...

She was injured in the field once before, falling and getting her hand caught in a grated table while shooting an episode of "Doomsday Preppers."
"I was filming in this shop where they make tactical products, and my shoes were making noise because they were squeaking on the floor, so the audio guy asked me to take off my shoes," Dakessian said. "I was walking around in socks and my feet slipped out from under me, and I fell down and my left hand went down into a grate table. So two of my fingers got caught, and I severely damaged two fingers in my left hand. I had to go to physical therapy, and it took me six months until I could make a fist again."

i think it was cancelled for a few years due to a minor off road SUV incident in 2012(?) when one of the occupants was injured and sued everyone including the farmers who donated the use of their property.  After that case was settled or thrown out PC continued

but of course in the most recent one, one of the TV producers was behind a Pneumatic cannon that breached and was hit in the head by a thick 12x12 piece of aluminum

from the 'explosion'.

While she initially lamented the cancellation of that years show and all of her efforts to record the contest, she later sued everyone possible, putting the contest on hold again.

Spent all day today working outside.. Mowed the lawn, put all the hoses away, etc.. Just cleaning up because it's going to start raining soon and it won't stop for months on end.  Lots of bugs still out there, including this monster. Biting deer flies.. Not fun. I live in a forest so, lots of them. Usually get about 30 minutes of work before they zero in on me. Sadly, with the mild winters and hot summers we now get, they aren't being killed off by the cold like they usually are. Vicious little bastards. This time of year, they usually calm down, but seems this year they will not go quietly into that long good night.

rat bastards

Due to new home construction nearby, displaced rats have moseyed on over to my neighborhood. So I have rat rat bastards. We tried sticky traps, but one got caught in it and I cried my eyes out. It seemed too cruel and if I would have yanked him off to save him, he'd be a tattered rat rat bastard. So to save me heartache, my hun got zappers. They get electrocuted in no time flat and never know what hit them. And they were dead not struggling. So after two successful zaps, we are now safe from those fat rat rat bastards. No poop from them anywhere.

Nothin' deer about those little bastards! You know, I scoop up spiders and take them outside and even leave a couple in the house. I like geckos in and around the house. I don't mind crane flies. But any other flies and mosquitoes should be tortured and die a horrific death. Roaches should be killed and hung in the roach town square for others to be warned to stay away. Junebugs, while frightening because the lazily fly into my hair, should be allowed to live because they're so darned dumb. Omigawd. They have to be the dumbest insect ever evolved.

Our spring and early summer were so rainy that our county park had 4 new, non-planned ponds that took months to dry out (actually not sure they ever did, as it's raining here yet again).  One time, I saw some kids playing with a pool inflatable.  Anyway, that made the bug situation there horrible, as you can imagine.  I played softball a bit earlier this summer, and a legit reason to call time out was because you'd gotten bugs in your eyes.  I'm fairly sure I swallowed a few.

Deep Woods Off didn't help.  The little bastards would crawl into your clothes and everything.

The fun part is what you can do with water when the air temp gets below about -10F or so.    The greater the temp differential the better, but you can toss a cup of hot water in the air and have it all suddenly sublimate into ice crystal fog with a loud CRACK! and watch it float away.   The last time I tried it with repeatedly great success was in Jackson Hole where we had a stretch of -35F or -40F at night.

In '84 or '85 we had -39F at my old farm and we tried tossing the dishwater out a 2nd floor window.   Most of it landed as ice.

In college, we had fights at the car wash with the pressure hoses. You can create instant snow drifts at -10F or below. Spray the water up in the air and it will freeze before it hits the ground.

The real challenge is what my local ski hill does.......they can make quality snow even up to 28F although they still need the wet bulb temp closer to 20F to do a good job.

This place in CA can make snow even when it's 90F outside although it's ridiculously expensive (plus they're cheating):

The water needs to be really hot since it's the vapor pressure differential which causes the phase sublimation.   It won't work as well if at all if the water is cold or lukewarm or if the mass is too great for the duration it's in the air, so we were probably just lucky to get it to work with a pan of wash water.

The hotter the better it works but it doesn't have to be boiling.   At Jackson Hole we nuked a cup of water for a minute so it was hot enough to make tea but it wasn't boiling, although that's probably why some of it landed on me when I accidentally tossed it straight up.

I have never run my defrost as much as I have this summer and fall.  There's so much moisture in the air that it doesn't seem to matter what temp my windshield is, it has condensation.  And when I get the interior cleared, I get condensation on the exterior.  I can't win.

There's physics involved somewhere, I just know there is.

It's so humid in the summer mornings that it's at least 2-3 miles before my windshield clears up and that's with the defroster on and the wipers going. I've been trying to figure out for the last 30 years should I increase the temp on the windshield or lower it?

These are the things that keep me up at night

I increase it.  I figure that's lowering the relative humidity of air inside the car, so the interior won't fog up.  And it prevents condensation on the exterior by not cooling the glass so much.

Sure is miserable in August, though.  So I give up and turn it back down, and get foggy windows.

Hell, if I could make a commercial for Rain-X, I would. I love that shit! The harder it rains, the better it works. Where I live, if I crack the back windows, the inside fog disappears pretty quickly, but Rain-X makes an inside windows product. I'm going to try it this winter.

I've been a Rain-X devotee since the mid-1980s when a friend's dad put it on my car. I love the fact that at highway speeds I don't need to use the wipers. It also helps the snow and ice not to stick to the windshield in the winter.

Sandy, you might try using the AC along with the defroster to clear the fogged windshield bcause the AC lowers the humidty of the air in the car.  Some cars do it automatically when you turn on the defroster, but I have to turn the AC on manually.

That's just twisted.    I'm not sure what I'd do with myself if I couldn't go X-C skiing right from the deck, or bomb down the local ski hill on a race board. In fact I'm thinking of moving because the winters here are getting too mild.

XC skiing or a winter hike are one of the few ways to stop cabin fever in mid January. I've went fly fishing in February with and old BF but that is a special kind of crazy when its 15°.

Northerners know that our snowblowers get used more than our mower and that anyone with a blower has millions of friends when the weather report that was partly cloudy and flurries changes to 6" of snow overnite.  There isn't anyone on my block that doesn't owe me a favor becaue I like to get out of the house and blow snow because it keeps me from  getting cabin fever. I put on my old XC bibs and parka and I can go for an hour easily.

Grilling in the winter is a winter pastime that others fregions of the US just don't understand.

I've never lived in an area where snow was part of the season. An occasional sprinkling of snow for one day has been my norm.

I know what you mean, I grew up in Miami, FL until I was in seventh grade and, then moved to Blowing Rock, N.C., the first winter there I nearly froze to death going to the bus stop for school, we lived in the caretakers house at a campground and, had to walk about a half mile to the stop, I had a Florida winter coat and, regular shoes and, we walked in a foot of snow to get there in the dark. Give me a warm place or, tropical weather and, I'm happy.

At my age, snow and ice are no longer a benefit, but keep in mind that I lived most of my life in Ontario Canada and enjoyed tobogganing, skiing and skating, even snowball fights, and the pristine beauty of a fresh pure white snow covering the landscape and the trees, but the most spectacular sight was the sun shining on the frozen branches after an ice storm creating a crystal paradise. That still looks like shorts weather where I live.   It needs to get down to -20F before we'll admit that it's a bit chilly and you might need a hat.

Of course we still lick street poles at that temp.

To me, it is officially cold at about 10°F because at that temperature the snow squeaks when you walk.

It's a damp cold and, the wind is usually going at about 50 mph and, we call that a light breeze, when a storm hits the wind usually goes up to about 90 to 110, at night if you go out when it's like that you could find your car frozen solid.

I guess it would be quite different if you lived near the coast.    Years ago I had friends in Hong Kong who always whined about the winters there because the apartments weren't heated or insulated.    For me it was too hot anyway.    Same thing when I'm working in Pensacola - way too hot and humid for my taste even in December & January.

One of my sisters used to live in Charlotte and we'd go down there for Christmas sometimes.   Even the Smokies were warm compared to where I had come from but I guess they could be colder after a good storm.

Charlotte is a world of difference from Blowing Rock or, Boone, the town we moved to when I started high school, they're both up in the mountains, Charlotte is in the Piedmont area and, is close to the South Carolina border so, it is always warmer than the mountains, I think the hottest it got up in Boone when I lived there was 85 degrees F, I have seen it get to 25 degrees below in Boone but, that was just for a few days in Feb or Jan.

I'm surprised by that.    That's borderline long pants weather!    When I was growing up we usually had a 2 week stretch where it didn't get above -20F, and nights approached -40F.    But that hasn't happened here for a long time.    We still get temps like that but only for a few days at a time, and the coldest night since the 1970s was in 1984 or 85 at -39F.    Things have definitely changed since then.

I had an Audi in college that regularly had frozen door locks, even when I lubricated them.  Having the door locks freeze open or closed used to be very common winter problem.

I remember I was drving home from Asheville, where my sister lives, in 2003 and there was a dusting of snow on the ground about 7:30am. People on I-40 by Hickory were crawling along at 45mph and I was doing 55-60.  The cops pulled me over twice and warned me for too fast for conditions. I told the cops that I was from the Cleveland area and back home we don't slow down to the speed limit until there is more than an inch of snow on the ground.

I love the artsy feel of Boone, except when the leaf peepers show up in the fall.

Any driver from the northern states or Canada knows how to drive on roads that are snow-covered, slushy, or icy, and shook their heads when they read about the multiple-vehicle crashes in the southern states when there was a little snow on the road. One lesson everyone learns at one point or another is that even if the ice melts on the roads when it starts to warm up, the ice on bridges stays solid because the cold air is also UNDER the bridge, not warm earth.

There is a 4-lane bridge not too far from me that is on a curve at the bottom of the hill. In the winter that becomes a crash site because you speed up as you go down the hill and then you hit the frozen deck and slide sideways into the concrete barrier if you aren't ready for it.

There comes a point where you tire of inhaling loose fur at night.    It's best not to get them started to begin with, especially when they eventually get big enough to occupy an entire king-size bed.

Also it's not the best idea where deer ticks & Lymes are prevalent.

The dog and cat both sleep with me.  I have about 4 inches of mattress, and I have to build a pillow fort around my head to keep the cat from doing "happy paws" on my face at 3 in the morning.  The dog sleeps under the covers, because that way, he can be closer to me than the cat.  It's good to be loved, I guess.

That sounds like a little piece of heaven. But I laughed at the happy paws. I had two brother Maine Coons that were so adorable, but I had to lock them out of my room at night. I could sleep with one or the other, but when they both wanted to sleep with me, they couldn't resist playing and rolling around and jumpin' on and off the bed. I couldn't get a moment's sleep. Of course, they napped generously while I was at work.

Well, it's the second day of fall, and it's raining (again, or still?  It's been a tremendously wet summer here.), sort of chilly, and I'm still scratching bug bites, because those little bastards don't disappear until it freezes.  I slept with the windows open last night, and tried to keep the dog near my feet so he could keep them warm.

It's still raining here and apparently, we have intermittent rains for the next 48 hours.  It feels very British because it's about 50°, overcast, and drizzle.

I have seen a lot of brown spiders that are about the size of a quarter.  The webs are everywhere in the yard and even on my patio.

Make sure they're not brown recluses! Those spiders are deadly as all hell.

What type blood are you?

I'm type A and if I'm around a bunch of folks with Type O skeeters leave me alone. They love type O better than they like type A. However, they will pick me over someone with Type B blood.

I read that on the internet

Both of them. I think it's momma and baby. They resemble each other so they must be related! They have the same eyes color.

Epi, please make sure they're not brown recluses. Those little fuckers cause necrosis if they bite you. People die from their bites.

I usually leave spiders alone outside but maybe I should start killing the little brown ones, just in case.

I think that's a good idea. I hate killing good spiders, but until you're sure they're not brown recluses, they gotta go!

Okay, now I started feeling guilty about recommending you kill every brown spider on the face of the earth, so I looked it up. The best article I've seen is this one . Very informative, if a little long. But now I'm armed with enough knowledge to be dangerous.

That was it!

Dr. Humphries had good sense of humor, too, which is probably why it's the only core class I ever got an A in....and I don't particularly like bugs

Reading this thread reminded me of something one of my nieces posted on FB, she lives in Florida and, wants the scientists there to cross lightening bugs with mosquitoes, that way you can see them in the dark.

I got tagged by a brown recluse when I was driving truck, I wasn't sure it got me until the spot it tagged rose to the occasion, I still have the scar from it on my arm.
