Jussie Smollett's Hate
When asked why he thinks this happened, Smollett answered, "I have gone hard against 45, I have gone hard against this administration." The mainstream media were all too happy to embrace any story that promotes their belief that President Trump and his supporters are racist and "homophobic."

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Conservative pundits have pointed out that Democrat elites and the so-called "mainstream" media were quick to accept actor Jussie Smollett's story of being assaulted by two Trump-supporters.

It is clear now that he lied.  Smollett said his attackers were white and that he would have been believed without question if his assailants had been "Muslim," "Mexican," or "black."  They were black.

When asked why he thinks this happened, Smollett answered, "I have gone hard against 45, I have gone hard against this administration."  The mainstream media were all too happy to embrace any story that promotes their belief that President Trump and his supporters are racist and "homophobic."

However, Smollett and the leftist media have a broader focus for their hatred than this president.  They hate America.  The alleged Smollett attack was designed not merely to prove that this president and his supporters are bigots, but to demonstrate once again that America is a hateful place where racism and homophobia run rampant.

The president's slogan, "Make America Great Again," is interpreted as code language for "make America white again."  His opposition to illegal immigration is depicted as a racist ploy to keep nonwhite people out of the country.  They know that President Trump is not the originator of what they see as America's sordid legacy of hatred and bigotry, but in their minds, he is its latest and best representative.

After the Charlottesville confrontation between white supremacists and radical leftists, the president's condemnation of both sides was deemed "racist."  As a black Virginian, I took the same view.  When he pointed out that the Mexicans who cross our southern border illegally are not that country's "best," he was stating the obvious, but that too was considered racist.

No matter what this president does to improve the lives of women, minorities, and all Americans, from the left's perspective, he is beyond redemption because he is the symptom.  America is the disease.  The left views us as a nation of white supremacy, white privilege, racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, inequality, oppression, corporate greed, and international imperialism.  Instead of "America the Beautiful," they see ugly Americans.  Instead of the "land of the free and the home of the brave," they see a land of the selfish and home of the brutal.  Instead of compassionate people, they see planetary parasites and climate deniers dragging the world to cataclysmic destruction.

They see America as the world's nightmare.  We drive SUVs, eat rich foods, and enrich billionaires while the world starves.  We believe in a judgmental God, a bigoted Bible, and an antiquated Second Amendment right to bear arms, all of which makes us a narrow-minded nation of gun nuts.  Our unprecedented prosperity was built on the backs of slaves, and our entire continent was stolen from American Indians. Our unparalleled contributions to mankind — industrial and technological advances; humanitarian generosity; the defeat of Nazism, communism, and other genocidal threats — are irrelevant.  From the perspective of the left, we are an illegitimate country.  Only "fundamentally transforming" America into a socialist state can pay for our sins.

One of the funnier parts of this farce is the leftwing media professing puzzlement as to how Smollett could do this.

you'd think the fact that the same media treated him as a bigger hero than Sargent York, would make the answer obvious, but apparently not.

I think the issue is that a lot of people are finding that they owe taxes this year when they didn't expect to, and that is expected to continue for the people who haven't yet filed.  They may be paying a lower effective rate, but if they didn't analyze what the changes in the tax code meant and adjust their withholding, they had too little withheld and ended up owing.  Especially with the removal of the personal exception and several other writeoffs.

Exactly.  I’m in the borderline between working and middle class and I got both more in my bi weekly paychecks and a bigger refund at the end of the year.  At the personal income level the rich often paid more because the nation wide cap on mortgage interest deduction at 750k and the nationwide cap on deductions for state and local taxes at 10k very often more than offset the cut in their top tax rate from 39.6% to 37%.

I get Americans sadly equate the size of their refunds with their actual tax burden,  but the overwhelming majority owed  less in taxes to the feds in 2018  then they otherwise would have without the tax cut.

the only exception are high earners in high tax states that own expensive houses but don’t make quite enough offset the lost tax deductions with the savings from the lowered brackets.  That’s about 5% of American taxpayers.

Witholding is the greatest invention the tax man ever came up with. People don't pay attention to how much of their money the government takes from them because they never see it. Then they are happy when the government gives them back some of their own money because the government took too much from them and earned interest off it.

Imagine if everyone had to write a check to the government every month for the amount they owed.  People would care alot more about much they paid if they saw it come out of their bank accounts.

Same as millions and millions of other people.

I do my best friends taxes every year and she was given the option of keeping her withholding the same rate or as close to the previous rate as possible,

so her salary / take home pay was constant.

I am nearly done her 2018 taxes and her normal refund is down $1600.00

Home mortgage interest, charitable deductions and medical expenses did not increase the refund one bit.

If this law holds up, itemizing will be a thing of the past for most people.

And for those who enjoy a refund, we will have to adjust our  withholding to accomplish that.

I don't have kids and my house is paid off, and my state and property taxes are low, so I haven't itemized in several years.  So for me, the doubling of the standard deduction helped and more than made up for the loss of the personal exemption.  I wasn't actually using the writeoffs that got taken away since I don't itemize.

We did in fact see tax cuts for the vast majority of Americans this year.  That some due to withholding changes got more up front in their regular paychecks and get a smaller or no refund now does not mean that they didn’t get their tax Bill lowered.  I tried to split the difference between having some more money each payday and getting a refund.  I’m going to adjust some more now that I’ve experienced a year of it so that I’ll get almost all of it up front and maybe a couple hundred as a refund.

All that to explain a cover sheet that had all the numbers needed to file.  I’m grateful that the Bush and Clinton cap gains and dividends tax cuts are in effect.  And they say only the rich benefit from those.  I did at the end of December sell and reinvest in something unrelated some holdings in my Stash and Stash custodial investment accounts in order to lock in a slight loss to partially offset the WellsTrade gains.  Still looking forward to my last big refund under these rules as I’m changing my with holding.

The VAWA expired because of the government shut down. Who was responsible for that?

from the link I posted earlier:

The partial shutdown of the U.S. government, which is affecting more than 800,000 federal workers and numerous government agencies, also has consequences for the Violence Against Women Act, which expired at midnight on Friday.

Separately, both the House and the Senate passed spending deals that included clauses that would have extended VAWA until Feb. 8.

But because the law's future became inextricably tied to the larger budget debate, which hinges on a dispute between Democrats and Republicans over funding for a border wall, it was not reauthorized.

There is no difference.  To say that I am lying is no different than to say that I am a liar and it’s not true.  Saying something that you don’t agree with does not meet the definition of a lie.

Simple enough to deal with, when one gets busted lying make a folder and place it in there.

When one gets busted enough (you'll know because the discussion will get abandoned as has happend frequently) you can whip out a pile of the busts....once proven there's not much defense.

Horrible way to go through life.  I almost feel sorry for them...almost.

I’m not a big Trevor Noah fan, but he really nailed this:

“But there is a silver lining,” he said. “When this started out, it was a story about people who hated Jussie Smollett because he was black and gay. But now, people hate him because he’s an @##hole. In other words, they’re judging him on the content of his character and not the color of his skin. And that, my friends, is progress.”

Bravo Sir!!

So in the event he’s found guilty of all that he’s been charged with, what should be his legal penalty?

Whatever the actual charges are...then enhanced because in actuality he commited a hate crime. So, whatever is the standard sentence is plus added time for it being a hate crime reported.

My guess is that he won’t see the inside of a prison cell for his crimes.
