Everything Trump Touches Dies - Racism At The Committee Version
The Republicans on that committee today did not make a single question of Cohen that was designed to show Trump's innocence. Not one. All of the effort was to discredit Cohen.

Near the end of the hearing today, the freshman Democratic congresswoman named Rashida Tlaib made a statement belittling one of the Republican committee members , Mark Meadows, for Meadows earlier assertion that Trump can't be a racist (as Cohen claimed) because he has a long time black employee who says Trump has always been nice to her.

Meadows demanded that Tlaib's comment be stricken from the record. Tlaib at first resisted that , and there was some shouting back and forth.

What we see here is an example of Rick Wilson's maxim "Everything Trump Touches Dies".   Comity and good will on the committee died at that moment, because Meadows chose to go to bat for Trump about his "racism".  A fool's errand.  I think the Democratic congresswoman went a little too far in inferring Meadows had been racist himself, but this is all a residue of everything Trump touches dies. When will his followers learn?

Is Trump a racist? Hard to say, there is not a lot of overt evidence, but there is a lot of circumstantial evidence. The gorilla in the room is Trump being the king birther. Birtherism is racism. Trump was the king birther, ergo he is racist. Maybe not quite an ipso facto , but it's close.

We also have Trump attacking black NFL players, black NBA players, saying black countries are "shitholes", and his retweeting of numerous white supremacists, including one that lied about the black on white crime statistics.

It is not difficult to make a prima facie case that Trump is racist. Like I said, it's not completely clear, but why would someone defend his ass about it?   Everything Trump Touches Dies.   That is his legacy to his political party, and to this country.

How shitty it must feel for Trump to realize that 20 congressmen of your own party couldnt find a single factual basis to defend you on. They don't seem to feel there is an basis on which to prove Trump innocent. All they can do is scream into the wind.

I have seen a lot of bitching that the hearing had no smoking gun about Russia. Therefore Trump is cleared.

Please.

The hearing wasnt about Russia. It was about Cohen being questioned about what he knows about illegal, unethical and immoral activity by the now president of the United States.

On the whole, Cohen held up well and gave investigators new directions to go. He also hinted strongly that Trump is under criminal investigation by the prosecutors in New York.

Hell year is underway for Trump.

Attacking Cohen's self-admitted and well-known lack of credibility was a stupid and foolish tactic.  It only served to highlight their lack of any kind of plausible defense of Trump's criminal behavior prior to his campaign, during his campaign, and during his presidency.

I agree 100% and well said. If all you have are dice with no dots, why get in the game when you know you can't win. You can throw the bogus dice out as many times as you want, but, you will never win. And that is what the Republicans were doing in that hearing today.

Talked to a few people today on both sides of the aisle; and, the overwhelming consensus was that the Republicans were attacking Cohen, but were not looking for the truth. That seems accurate.

That was abundantly clear. The did nothing but attack his credibility and seemed jointly to refuse to ask anything that might in any way bring Trump to the fore.

They showed their true colors of blind support for Trump and lack of fidelity to the American people by refusing to actually ask viable questions.

It would seem that they took Trumps threat to them serious and did nothing but try to defame Cohan, who is already defamed and ready to serve his time for his crimes.

I have to wonder if they would do the same as Cohan did if they were found guilty of their own crimes.

All the Republicans except Justin Amash. I almost fell out of my recliner when he asked an actual relevant questions. He was the one that asked about how Trump talks in code. It was a good question.

As a political tactic, birtherism forced Barack Obama to emphasize his American ancestry rather than his immigrant ancestry.  That is consistent with America First political ideology.

The racist meme is predicated on the idea that only white people can be racist.  While that has proven to be an effective political counter argument toward any opposition, effectively changing the subject in any situation, the racist meme has also established a perpetual status of disadvantage that cannot be overcome by merit.

The popularity of birtherism among the tea party right in 2008-2011 was predicated on opposition to the first non-white president. Thus the fantasy that he was born in Africa.

The truth is that there was never any doubt as to where Obama had been born. He was born in Hawaii, which at the time was one of the 50 United States.

Yes.  The idea that Obama was born in Africa meant he wasn't an American.  That forced Obama to emphasize his American ancestry which was more than just fulfilling the citizenship requirement to be President.  America First political ideology makes a distinction between living in the United States and being an American; it's necessary to embrace American ancestry, culture, and heritage to be considered an American.

Democrats overlaid the racist meme on birtherism to change the subject.  But the unintended consequence was that it forced Obama into a status of disadvantage rather than merit.  Obama had to avoid the racist meme to make the argument that he was qualified to be President on merit.  The Democrat's knee jerk reliance on the racist meme to change the subject actually hampered Obama's ability to address race relations; threatening to give credence to claims that he was elected only because of his race rather than being elected on his merits.

Your presentation is convoluted.

Birtherism was a reaction to the possibility and then the reality of a black president of the United States. It is a form of racist reaction on the part of those whites that fear they will become a minority population in "their" country.

But Barack Obama could not be a black President.  Obama was required to be an American President.

That was due to the politics from both sides.

He was elected on his merits.

Correct.  Barack Obama was elected on his merits; not because he is black and not because he is the son of an immigrant.  What does that say about political emphasis on racial and minority disadvantage?
