When I was a teenager I used to spend some of my summer vacation at Crystal Beach, Ontario, which is on the north shore of Lake Erie, across the Niagara River from Buffalo, and a lot of American kids would be there. We would talk about school, and they would talk about their marks of 98, 99 and 100% being normal, while we Canadians were lucky to just exceed a 75% honours mark. Somehow I really don't think they were any smarter than we Canadians were.

I would concede that that is absolutely possible. I grew up in a cheap tiny house that didn't have one, but I knew people that had one and I understood what they were and how they worked. That was also a long time ago.
In New York, where the sewer pipes may be very old, the devices were not allowed for a long time and many older buildings may still not have them. AOC, though, didn't grow up in some tiny apartment in The Bronx, like people might think. She grew up in a house up in Yorktown Heights, away from the city. And of course she has had many experiences since then. Even though she is young for a Congresswoman, I would be amazed to find out this is her first encounter with a garbage disposal.
