Aug. 21 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump has postponed a trip to Denmark to meet with its prime minister, apparently because the Danish government won't sell Greenland to the United States.

Trump was scheduled to travel to Copenhagen next month to meet with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Kim Kielsen.

For weeks, it's been reported that Trump inquired about buying Greenland -- a largely autonomous nation technically under Danish ownership -- and Denmark's refusal is at the heart of the canceled September visit.

"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," Trump tweeted. "The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct."

Trump has pursued the buy as "large real estate deal" and said, "strategically it's interesting." Experts believe Greenland's vast natural resources are the primary reason for his interest.

"It's something we talked about," Trump said last weekend. "Denmark essentially owns it, we're very good allies with Denmark."

Frederiksen told Sermitsiaq , "Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland."

Greenland's foreign ministry also rejected the idea in a tweet.

"Greenland is rich in valuable resources such as minerals, the purest water and ice, fish stocks, seafood, renewable energy and is a new frontier for adventure tourism," Greenland's foreign minister said. "We're open for business, not for sale."

Trump and first lady Melania Trump were supposed to visit Denmark Queen Margrethe II and conduct bilateral meetings with business leaders.

The Danish Royal House was surprised by Trump's postponement.

"This has never happened before," Danish Royal House Director of Communications Lene Balleby told CNN .

Donald Trump

"China now releases almost as much carbon dioxide as the U. S. and Europe combined.

This leads to a painful but inescapable truth -- no matter how much they spend, no matter how dramatically they change their societies, the U.S. and Europe won’t be able to put much of a dent in global warming on their own. Yes, the U.S. should ban coal power, tax carbon heavily and spend lots of money on building green energy infrastructure (LEFTY IDEA) . But without a huge change in China, none of that will matter -- the battle against climate change will be lost."

-----------------------------------

"Another potential approach is conditional tariffs on Chinese products . Instead of only taxing the carbon content of Chinese-made goods, the U.S. could threaten to put tariffs on all Chinese products unless it agrees to leave more of its coal permanently in the ground. Banning exports of coal from the U.S., and heavily subsidizing exports of solar and wind technology, would also help make coal less attractive around the world. Tariffs could also be placed on coal exporters like Australia, Indonesia and Russia, encouraging them to keep their own coal safely underground."

So....with that in mind, and having the likes of AOC and all the other "Lefty" Advocates in the U.S. doing everything they can against industry, and costing the U.S. citizen big bucks for environment protection.....and the fact China isn't doing much even after they always say they will …. TRUMP IS CORRECT about "China is a Fault" and an enabler, along with the "Left" (See Linked article) that wants to "Regulate' everything in this country for "Environmental Reasons" !

Gosh ..... hasn't Trump put tariffs on Chinese products already ?

But Trump doing it is a BAD, BAD thingy !jrSmiley_98_smiley_image.gif

Perhaps Steven Miller has convinced Trump to export a new kind of white to Greenland when the snow is all gone... It will be their white utopia, a paradise on earth for straight white evangelical Christians with dozens of golf courses, suburbs built around a Church, several "Bible Lands", Ken Hamm will move his Ark exhibit there, Chick-Fil-a on every corner, they'll escape all the brown people, Muslims, liberals and lgtbq and not even have to build a wall! It's their idea of a "Win! Win!". And all the while they'll still be claiming global warming is a hoax.

They've already got the Ark, Bible Land and their Chick-fil-a's and they're some of the laziest people I know so getting them to move might be quite a chore...

And SOME people wonder why we talk about Trump all the time.

Ya, We do...BTW We tried to buy Greenland before Trump.

"This has never happened before," Danish Royal House Director of Communications Lene Balleby  told CNN .

False:

The U.S. in 1946 proposed to pay Denmark $100 million (in gold) to buy Greenland,  the Associated Press reported in the early 1990s, citing Danish press and the newly discovered documents that had been classified since the 1970s. The proposed deal called for swapping oil-rich land in Alaska for strategic parts of the Arctic island, documents in the National Archives showed.

We also bought the Virgin Islands from them:

Beginning in 1867, the United States made several attempts to expand its influence into the Caribbean by acquiring the Danish West Indies. However, due to a number of political difficulties in concluding and ratifying a treaty to govern this exchange, this collection of islands did not become a part of the United States until their formal transfer from Denmark on March 31, 1917. After the transfer, the United States Government changed the name of the islands to the Virgin Islands of the United States.

No, they are still part of the Kingdom of Denmark. They have a lot of control over self-governance that has been granted to them by Denmark. This authority has been granted piecemeal over the years - in 1953 and again in 1979 - with the most recent such expansion of self-rule authority coming in 2009.

However, Denmark still actively controls Greenland's foreign policy, monetary policy, and defense. In fact, the extant presence of the US Thule Air Base is by agreement with Denmark, not Greenland. Greenland is not an independent and sovereign country, and Denmark is still free to sell it if it wishes.

The country has its own Parliament and premier and control over most political matters, except those concerning foreign policy and national security....so on other words unless the people of Greenland vote for it, its ABZURD to think he can!

Shock in Denmark after Trump, spurned over Greenland, cancels visit

By Nikolaj Skydsgaard

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Danish leaders expressed shock and disbelief on Wednesday over U.S. President Donald Trump's cancellation of a state visit to Denmark after its prime minister rebuffed his interest in purchasing Greenland.

Trump's proposal at first elicited incredulity and humor from politicians in Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States, with former premier Lars Lokke Rasmussen saying: "It must be an April Fool's Day joke."

But the mood turned to shock when Trump called off the Sept. 2-3 visit after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called his idea of the United States buying Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, "absurd".

"Total chaos with @realDonaldTrump and cancellation of state visit to Denmark. It has gone from a big opportunity for strengthened dialogue between allies to a diplomatic crisis," former foreign minister Kristian Jensen, a member of the opposition Liberal Party, said on Twitter.

"Everyone should know Greenland is not for sale," Jensen said of the world's largest island, which has considerable mineral wealth and a U.S. military presence at the Thule Air Base under a U.S.-Danish treaty dating to 1951.

Frederiksen, who had been due to hold talks with Trump in Copenhagen, planned a news conference later on Wednesday.

She said earlier this week Greenland was "not for sale" and she hoped Trump's proposal was "not meant seriously".

"SHOCKING"

"(Trump's cancellation) is very, very shocking, when it is about a very close ally and a good friend," Soren Espersen, the foreign affairs spokesman for the hard right Danish People's Party, told Danish news agency Ritzau.

He described Trump's decision as a snub to Queen Margrethe, Denmark's head of state. Trump and U.S. First Lady Melania Trump were formally invited to Denmark by Queen Margrethe in July.

"It shows why we now more than ever should consider (fellow) European Union countries as our closest allies. The man is unpredictable," said Morten Ostergaard, leader of the Danish Social Liberal Party. "Reality surpasses imagination."

Trump, whose "America First" policies have resulted in strained relations with the EU over trade and other issues, said on Sunday that a U.S. purchase of Greenland would be "a large real estate deal."

"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, a former NATO secretary general and Danish premier, said Trump's cancellation could work out for the best. "The Arctic's security and environmental challenges are too important to be considered alongside hopeless discussions like the sale of Greenland," he said on Twitter.

Greenland, which is gaining attention from world powers including China, Russia and the United States due to its strategic location and mineral wealth, is self-governing but underdeveloped and relies on Denmark for economic support.

"I think it's sad (Trump) is not coming, because we could have had a lot of demonstrations showing that we don't agree with his politics, and especially his climate politics," Hans Pedersen, a landscape architect, told Reuters in Copenhagen.

A six-meter (20-foot)-tall inflatable blimp depicting a baby version of Trump, most recently seen at a protest in London, will reappear at an anti-Trump rally to be held in Copenhagen on Sept. 2 despite the president's no-show, organizers said.

Aaja Chemnitz Larsen, a lawmaker from Greenland's opposition party Inuit Ataqatigiit party, said she was not surprised at the cancellation but it underlined the territory's importance.

"The U.S. is an interesting ally for Greenland, but we also wish for Greenland to remain in the union we have today."

Oh, and I can't stand Trump; didn't vote for him or Hillary. It doesn't matter which one comes tumbling out of it at this point.

I am a fiscal conservative. This trip to Denmark wouldn't have accomplished anything beyond a diplomatic photo op. If Denmark feels slighted, I hope Trump slights several more of our "allies" and "enemies".

Just think of the environment. The canceling of this pointless trip saved the US tax payer, and helped the environment at the same time.

No, that's exactly what "precedent" is. Someone has done it before. Once, or 500 times doesn't matter.

We don't run around screaming about how insane Truman was for his effort. But when Trump wants to do it, it's not enough to say it's unnecessary or even ill-advised. It's a gaffe! It's insane! What is this world coming to? Trump has lost his mind!

Trump has reason to be offended. Denmark has sold land to the US previously (Virgin Islands) and the US has made previous offers on Greenland that were received seriously and with respect. Acting like such talk is beyond the pale now smacks of personal animosity toward Trump. I don't think Trump did anything to Denmark to warrant such disrespect.

You call him calling the PM Nasty being respectful?

The PM was nasty to him first. That's how these things always go. Somebody disrespects Trump; he fires back; and everyone makes a big deal about what Trump said, while ignoring the original provocation.

Considering that the US has previously talked with Denmark about buying Greenland, and also that the US actually did buy the Virgin Islands from Denmark, it's ignorant and disrespectful to treat Trump's interest in Greenland as somehow unusual or inappropriate.

Very undiplomatic.

"Undiplomatic" means "against the normal practices of diplomacy". The word is applicable to talking about acquiring a territory, so widely that the story is absolutely certain to make it into the media... before talking to the authorities of the other country.

But of course, we now expect Trump's behavior to break normal standards.

Like I just said, the behavior of one person should not dictate the behavior of others. That's the opposite of diplomacy. You would be plenty critical of Trump if he said something obnoxious about another world leader and you wouldn't be interested in hearing about the rude things that leader has said or done to deserve it. You would be correct if you said we should rise above that kind of petty back and forth. Instead, you have a double standard. Why? Because Trump.

I don't actually consider the word "absurd" to be rude. The "nasty" comment - that was rude. His favorite word to use about women who say no to him.

You know the NT rules - it's just fine to criticize an idea, which she did. It is not fine to insult someone, which is what he did. See the difference?

If Trump hadn't gone about this in his usual blundering, impulsive fashion, the word "absurd" wouldn't have been necessary in the first place. She was blindsided and responded accordingly when she realized Trump was serious. No mention was made about discussing the purchase of Greenland when this meeting was set up - and now suddenly that's the whole purpose of the meeting?

Where exactly was trump going to get the money in the first place? Not a bank on the planet would loan that loser money. Was he waiting for coupon day? Put it on layaway at Wal-Mart, (while dodging bullets), or maybe Black Friday on Amazon?

Greenland is 2.1 million sq. Km, roughly 1/4 the size of the USA... it's not a "little island". It would cost trillions of dollars even if it was for sale.

I'd much rather see it spent expanding the holdings of the United States as opposed to say, funding a production of "Doggie Hamlet," making 3D scans of puppets, have the DOD watch gnatcatcher birds, spending $1 billion on 10 miles of trolley line in San Diego, $6 billion for California's high speed rail to nowhere. How about over $3 billion for vacations for federal employees already on leave because they are being investigated for misconduct? And don't even get me started on the government programs taken advantage of by illegal aliens.

There is so much garbage that the US government already wastes my tax dollars on. Actually investing in what would likely be highly productive land seems pretty freaking smart by comparison.
