De Blasio urges 'nationalization' of key industries, calls coronavirus outbreak a 'war-like situation'
“This is a case for a nationalization, literally a nationalization, of crucial factories and industries that could produce the medical supplies to prepare this country for what we need,” de Blasio told MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Saturday, calling for “24/7 shifts” during what he called a “war-like situation.”

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is arguing that the best way to tackle the coronavirus outbreak is for the federal government to take over critical private companies in the medical field and have them running 24 hours a day.
The mayor, who made multiple media appearances over the weekend, said that the current situation calls for drastic measures which include nationalizing certain industries.

The following day, de Blasio reiterated this message, telling CNN that “the federal government needs to take over the supply chain right now.” He specified the need for companies that make ventilators, surgical masks, and hand sanitizers to be taken over and made to work around the clock.

New York state already has started producing hand sanitizer in response to shortages and price gouging.
The city itself has also taken drastic steps to deal with the crisis, forcing restaurants to limit themselves to takeout and delivery service, and closing many establishments to prevent the spread of the virus through crowds.
The mayor predicted that coronavirus will continue to be a problem “for at least six months.”

Sunday evening, it was announced that New York City schools will be shutting down until at least April 20, a measure de Blasio previously had resisted, despite facing pressure to do so.

I wonder if Comrade De Blasio has New York prisoners working 24/7 to create his hand sanitizers?

Welcome to the gulag citizen...

It is NOT nuts.

My niece (who is pregnant for the first time with twins) someone where she works is in quarantine.

A person who has tested positive for COVID-19 works out of the Tops Friendly Markets corporate office in Amherst, the company announced Monday morning.

The company said in a release that it learned late Saturday that an associate who works out of the office on Wehrle Drive had tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease. The Erie County Department of Health confirmed Monday that an Erie County resident working at Tops headquarters tested positive for the disease.

The company said that the individual is under self-quarantine at a personal residence and that they last reported to work on Monday, March 9.

The Department of Health stated in a release that through its contact tracing and epidemiological investigation, it was determined that the individual was not symptomatic during their time at the corporate office, and "therefore did not pose a risk of transmission to other TOPS employees per CDC guidelines on COVID-19."

The Department of Health said its investigation did not indicate that the individual had any contact with TOPS stores, warehouses or other facilities during times where they may have been contagious.

A person who works at my work (their relative is in quarantine, should know the results today) so the entire floor this person works on did not have to come in today (the building I work in has 13 floors)

Just because it hasn't come close to you stop thinking the rest of us are nuts.

I was due to go in to the hospital on Friday for an Endoscopy and that has now been rescheduled until April 13th.

It is nuts.  53 confirmed cases in my state, out of millions of residents and no fatalities.  Doubt anyone knows anyone with this virus.

Maybe for your area it isn't nuts, but for mine I think we have gone to the extreme.

Hope you and your family stay well.

Thank you.

I know it's going to get worse before it gets better.

I feel for the people who work in the bars/restaurants, they are the ones that will be hurt the most.

Still waiting on what my firm is planning, but if they close down (our Toronto office is already closed and people are working remotely from home) we will be paid, and some of us (staff wise) might have to work remotely from home...I may be one of them.

Just read a local public health advisory for my county of about 100k.

We have zero reported cases of people infected by this virus which is a great thing.    So far so good.   Schools are still closing for three weeks starting today.   You can't buy hand sanitizer, toilet paper or Potatoes, etc anywhere ....... crazy

That said i do view some of the precautions being taken as a good thing to help insure a lower infection rate.   The real acid test will be how fast restrictions are removed if the infection rate remains low.

Otherwise, people will shop for the state they like

people have been doing that forever. it is called voting with one's feet.  if people don't like a state government.. they leave and go to one they like.

making all states the same is very short-sighted as that would not allow the laboratories of democracy to experiment and people to choose how they are governed.
