New Function: Member NTship!

Hello NTers
You have probably noticed a new notation under your name. If you were an old-timer from Newsvine, think of this as like Vineicity, but this tells you about your life here on the NT.
Being a teacher, I wanted to use a scale that would be intuitive to understand.
The top word tells you how long you have been here at NT. In order they go:
- Freshmen
- Sophomore
- Junior
- Senior
- Masters
- PhD
- Professor
The second word is to designate how many posts you have made while being a member. In order they go:
- Silent (few or no comments)
- Quiet
- Participates
- Guide
- Expert
- Principal
I hope you enjoy this new addition to the site.
I hope you like this new addition and it inspires you here.
I was wondering what that was. Was thinking a glitch in the matrix.
Then I was trying to remember what the vineicities were. I had a couple of them. I remember thinking I would never get the last one.
Not disagreeing with the nomenclature, just wondering if yours wouldn’t be more appropriate as “Gandalf” or “Methuselah” or something ,,,?
Yeah, well, Perrie is just another user to the designation function.
HeyJunior! Nice to see you. Now where in the heck have you been?
I think "Her Majesty" is sufficient
Wow... we could change it to royal titles, but I fear the Yanks wouldn't know the order.
Only if we get to vote for the Court Jester
I watch a lot of British TV and read a lot of historical novels. Try me.
King
Queen
Prince/Princess
Duke/Duchess
Marquis/Marquess
Earl/Countess
Viscount
Baron
Knight
How close did I get?
The list continues
I am actually King of the world. Get used to it.
Call me a yank again and expect some really bad press.
Me too and I think you nailed it. Except I think the female counterpart for Marquis is Marchioness.
Wow, I am impressed!
You're right. I always get that messed up. I mix up the French term with the English one
Thanks!
Like Ender, I have been trying to figure out what the new names under our avatars meant. I am glad that you have now given us the reason why they are there.
I am a Professor Principle. A designation I am most proud to have. Thank you.
I'm just above Jill Biden. Well done!
Never, no way.
Evening..Pardon my ignorance...
But what is a Freshman??..heard of it on American TV shows etc and Sophomore?
In Canada and the USA the 4 years required to achieve a Bachelor's degree at a university are named (from first year to fourth year) Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior.
Oh ok..so I am first year at Uni..no worries..thanks buzz.😀
Those are the names of the four years of High School in the US as well, Buzz.
I suspected that. In Canada high school year designations are grades 9, 10, 11, 12, (when I went to school in Ontario there was also a grade 13 in hign school, which allowed me to get my B.A. in 3 years instead of 4, but now it's the same 4 years as the other provinces always were.
I like my designation, smile.
Hmmmmm
Being a bit more specific now from the more technical perspective, there are essentially two grades: seniority and contribution.
This is seniority. It is more complex than simply how long you have been here. It is a weighted function based on your participation levels on the site over time. Thus members who have been registered for years but have not been very active will not have much seniority. Also, seniority degrades over time. A very active member in 2015 who is hardly around today will have a low seniority.
This is contribution and it is a very involved computation that considers original articles vs seeds, number of article votes up, number of comments in the article, etc. and of course raw number of articles posted (original and seed counted distinctly). It also factors in comments, votes up on your comments and the number of comments your comment encouraged (i.e. if you write a comment on 3.1 and it heads a thread of 50 comments, that is good for your contribution).
As with seniority, contribution degrades over time. So your contribution this month counts just a bit more than your contribution last month and so on back in time.
Finally, tickets and suspensions count against contribution. These too fade over time. So a bad month could indeed change your contribution level.
Ultimately this is just for fun. Most of the other sites offer something similar to this so it makes sense that NT offer its own variant. And this is all computed automatically based on accumulated metrics in the NT database. It is what it is.
Stop judging me !
Haha
I just hate it when TiG posts all that logical stuff, it's so unlike a lot of the comments on NT. Correct spelling, correct punctuation, and logic I'm not sure that I can handle that all at one time.
STOP IT, TiG.
Stop the steel; know. Get a brain .. moran.
How's that? ⇡
Hahahaha!!!!!!
pffft, I've been called worse here.
bfd.
LOL
I think you need to try harder, TiG
I don't agree that seniority should degrade over time as it is based upon time of membership rather than contributions. Once a member has been here from the start he should retain that seniority since it is based on length of time as a member, until retirement or death, and then the designation should change from Professor to "Emeritus" as long as their membership is still registered.
I was looking for the designations of ''Big Chief and Medicine Man''. I've hired Rudy Four Seasons to take my case to the highest court in the land which of course is Red.
Rudy wanted the money upfront since he is starring down the barrel of the $1.3 billion dollar lawsuit. I've always been generous that way so I sent him a suitcase full of these.
Best line of the evening!
What about Shaman?
LMAO!! Good one Buzz!
Let’s see. I joined newsvine in early 2009 from MSN since 2007 and was on the AOL Political message boards since early 1998. I originally created CornHusker4Palin while still on AOL. Most on AOL from 2000 on knew me as GWBushfan1.
nobody cares.
And yet you responded. Because you care...
How does one get promoted?
Stick around, and comment.
Oh, and stay out of trouble.
ha ha ha, nope...
Trouble? Me? Ha! I scoff in the face of trouble. BTW, my monthly check is on the way.
You naughty boy! That's one of the reasons I like you so much. . .
I don't remember you as having worn pants in that image.
uh, those are shin guards, .... because of your toenails ...
Is the dog necessary?
the weekend theme ...
I would be afraid to ask that question....
my shortest distance between 2 points is always thru the gutter.
I agree with most everything shown in the picture as an answer to Sister Mary's question, except what's up with the dog? Oh.... and the odd placement of the artwork on the wall?
... the art isn't screwed to the walls in 5 star properties. work on it.
I remember Dana Kaczmarek... which is probably not true of many, here.
Bob,
What made you bring her up? For those of you who remember the NV, Dana went by the name Dkaz.
I was wondering how many other ''Masters'' can remember her.
Bob,
The time score has many factors to it including how much you participate over all those years. You have many times that you were gone for months and even a year. That affects your score on time.
whatever
Seniority is a function of time and participation. It is also weighted from current to the past. So, for example, members who were active years ago and then went silent will see their seniority in an atrophied condition. It still counts, but less. Basically, if someone is not participating on the site their seniority will atrophy with time.
In short, seniority is not simply current-date minus registration-date.
Like I said, ''whatever''.
It's interesting to see how Management perceives our contributions.
In other words you just made it up.
Why not try and read what Tig wrote. It is hardly made up. It is actually an algorithm that is based on math.
algorithms dont create their own purpose, do they?
The purpose was to give incentives and have fun. Sorry, you don't see it that way. I guess you got all your leaves on the vine.... not. The last one management decided. Here that is not the case.
It is a calculation based on participation over time. Think it through. If seniority were simply based on sign-up date then someone who signed up 5 years ago and did not participate would have the highest level of seniority.
Surely you see the problem with that. They would have the same seniority level as you.
We assume that you vetted the results before releasing your algorithm into the wild.
So you (Management) agree with the results.
Right?
I get it. It's just not how long you've been here but the effort you've made to do your job and do it well. It's a meritorious system and that's how we get evaluated where I work
Bob, there is nothing to vet here. Seniority is not simply 'the time since one registered an account on NT'. That would make no sense. Do you understand why?
So, assuming you do, you should recognize that it makes sense to count seniority when a member is participating and not count it when they are not participating.
Seniority being simply the time since one registers an account with NT would not be a very accurate reflection. Odd that anyone would object to seniority being a function of participation over time rather than simply time.
Of course there is. You parameterized the algorithm. With other parameters it would produce other results. The algorithm can be tuned to produce whatever results are desired.
I cannot imagine that you simply dumped numbers into the algorithm, by guess and by gosh.
The logical process is to test the algorithm's results, and then fine tune your parameters, iteratively, until it provides results that are satisfactory.
I cannot imagine that you might do otherwise.
And therefore, it seems perfectly reasonable to assume that Management agrees with these rankings.
Do you seek seniority to simply be the time from when one first registers with NT? If not, what else should be factored in?
As you can see, some are resistant to anything new here
You saying it is a merit system doesnt make it a merit system TG.
the cane wavers and walker pushers are near revolt ...
Maybe the system should just assign 100% seniority and 100% contribution to everyone and forget about the actual metrics.
I don't "seek" anything. I observe...
If your target is "seniority" then it would be "date of inscription". If the target is "presence", then "total number of days present". If the target is "assiduity", then: (days present) / (days inscribed). There are surely lots of other approaches, and of course the algorithm could use several definitions, weighted according to what Management considers most important.
I assume that is the process that was used, here.
Since you didn't tell anyone what the metrics are... eliminating them might be just as valid as what you actually did.
Okay, from now on you should consider what has been labeled the 'seniority' grade to be the 'assiduity' grade. I think most people would find 'seniority' a friendlier term, but if you want to call it assiduity then it works given how you defined it.
Labels aside, do you understand why it makes no sense to simply calculate the number of days since a member registered their account without considering whether or not they participated on the site? Time and participation vs. (merely) Time?
Not sure how many times I must write this before it registers. Seniority is a function of time on the site and participation on the site.
So you're saying that somebody who joined before me but only ever made 5 comments has more seniority?
Just messin' with ya.
Looks like a lot of manufactured outrage around here.
No. The new system is acceptable to the majority of members.
People who are not an active, full time participant can't expect to get a Gold Medal, so to speak. Apparently, some do.
That's nonsense. The second indicator is dedicated to "participation", so it would be foolish to inject it here. Unless you actually mean "presence"... which is not the same thing...
It would be perfectly reasonable to include, here, both seniority and assiduity. A formula would be needed to give each of those topics whatever weight Management desires.
Going overboard on "assiduity" would also be ridiculous: a thirty-day veteran, present every one of those thirty day, would score 100%... which is probably not what you want.
I repeat, "a formula is required". With coefficients.
And you can fiddle the coefficients however you like...
... says the lady who got great scores...
Gee...
Am I not active enough for you, RW?
Bob if this is only about your 'scores' then note that you have the highest contribution level and are closing in on the next level of assiduity (as you would prefer). This is all a function of what you have done. It is simply mathematics. Sandy's 'scores' are calculated using the exact same mathematics as yours (and everyone else). The only difference is the data.
Please don't ruin this for everyone else, Bob. Perrie intended this to be light-hearted and fun, and you're making it all about your disappointments.
Why do you put "scores" in quotation marks? Isn't that exactly what these are?
I do not doubt that you used the same formulas for everyone. Comparing the results of various members, I doubt the formulas' validity, but since they are not public, I have no way of checking.
I have no problem with Sandy getting good "grades" (since you don't want to use "scores"). She is active, and suffering through the pain of Moderation should be worth scads of bonus points to make up for the fact that she doesn't seed all that much. I do have a problem with "a lot of manufactured outrage around here". A Mod might find that to be at the limit of "trolling".
They are simply spoil sports and try to dampen the fun for others. However, I won't let that happen for me. I am having great fun with it, and I don't think I am alone.
There is no reason for the majority to have to give it up for the very few who don't like it. But, then, they don't like anything that isn't all about them.
OK.
I'm done here.
It is not me you have to please. And in the words of Rhett Butler, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."
He is just working on his assiduity....
As opposed to the creation and proliferation of this little tempest in a teapot.
I said I was done... but if you insist, I can persist.
Shall we dance?
Good grief Bob.
Good grief, TiG.
I adhere to Mark Twain's philosophy:
“It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt”
LOL... now that is a good one!
I try to live by this one:
I must be the world's oldest freshman.
Or very young at heart!
Indeed! And what he contributes to the site is very much appreciated by most members.
Aww thanks!
Thank you, Raven Wing.
You and Perrie are both very nice.
Lol I would have guessed "Quiet" for myself but I guess I'm not as much of a lurker as I would have thought
Well, in this case, it is better not to be a lurker.
I hadn't even noticed the designations until I came to this post.
I haven't even looked to see what I was listed as... guess I'm about to find out when I post this comment.
Yeah... makes sense. Even though I came from NV [where I didn't participate a lot] and joined NT early, I didn't participate a lot early on and then was MIA for a few years. But still no tickets!
Don't push it Missy..........LOL
Kidding
LMAO!!
I'll be glad to share mine with you. I've got plenty to go around. The world twice.
Can...can I borrow one or two? I still only have one. But, it's not from not trying.
I'm good. Thanks for the offer.
Of course! I'll keep a few more in reserve for you in case you need to enhance your street cred later.
I'll buy some! I still only have one for the entire month and there's only 3 days left.
Perrie needs a fire sale for tickets
Thanks Sister. My street creds have not been the same for several years, so they could use some enhancement.
Same here Giggles.
I know I just noticed it a few minutes ago. I thought someone gave me a new job while I was away as a guide for sophomores. I'm still waiting for Perrie to shoot me the list of sophomores.
I can also guide folks through the processes of delivering sophomoric humor.
Yes, yes. Very good. Me too.
What fun! Yet another class system.....
Play more, get more and time served. Isn't that how real life works?
And this isn't about class. It is about encouragement in participation.
Greg is quiet but rarely inaccurate, lol
(sniper?)
Of course it's about class. I'm sorry if my posts seem sophomoric, I'll be quiet now.
Greg,
Obviously, you didn't even read the article associated with this. Your time here is on a scale that is used like in college. So, you have spent about the time that a sophomore has spent here. If you spend more time, then you will be a junior... and so forth. It is not that your comments are sophomoric. If you are looking for an insult, there is none.
Class systems yield a benefit. This is not a class system since there is no benefit. This was just supposed to be fun.
If you implemented a method of classifying members you've created a class system.
We classify types of animals and plants and there is no "class system" as you imply. No one gets a benefit out of this other than having some fun.
And it is fun. Sorry that some don't get the humor in it. But, I am really enjoying it.
I am satisfied with my rating and think it is accurate and it is fun
Same here charger. and I am having fun as well.
Do these honors come with a progressive incentive package?
No... because then it would be a class system.
I like it. You come back as someone else and you feel younger......
I wonder if you shaved the beard folks might think you are still in Junior High?
One could think so, but I think my facial hair is coming at the expense of the top of my head, so probably just wishful thinking.
I have been trying to post our history on Everipedia ( everipedia.org ), and when I was reading our history I began to rethink about those people who have been with NT since the beginning. NewsTalkers has been around longer than our current site (and its data) shows. Because of this, and because this was supposed to be a fun function, I have decided to grandfather in all founding / long-standing members who are still active on the site. This will cause them all to show a seniority of Professor (the highest level).
I hope this helps.
Can I be Empress then ?
Oh great, now everyone will want to be Empress.
They may WANT to be Empress, but only my wife is...
She makes a fine Empress Buzz! And she treats you like Emperor, right?
Exactly, which is as it should be.
Note my Rockport Walker peeking out from under my robe...
I was just thinking, maybe instead of "Professor" my designation should be "Emperor".
A lovely empress!
I just want to keep my head
How pretty! Is that wall made of gold?
Was this your wedding ceremony?
Your Kitty can....
Holy Moly! I just got promoted to Professor!
Not likely.
Congratulations Professor!
Would I have to bow?
No. We first did a civil ceremony for legal purposes - no guests for that.
Then about 7 or 8 weeks later we did the traditional ceremony where we had guests, and a banquet following for friends and family.
But we also had a lot of photos taken for our wedding album. I particlularly like this one in which we are wearing ancient traditional wedding costumes.
I like the wedding costumes
Yes.
If we grandfathers can help with Everipedia, just ask.
You know there is some sort of weird glitch on that site. I can't get it to post my article and it says I have another account, and I don't.
I'll take a look... tomorrow...
Thanks!
No luck. I couldn't even get signed in. I tried using my Google account, but the sign-in box just closes with nothing accomplished.
I tried using an email address, and get tossed into a doom loop.
To be frank, I don't like the looks of this outfit. Are you sure it isn't a bitcoin scam?
Oh, wow...
I just got a "Welcome to Everipedia" email, to my gmail address... that I didn't give them. (I suppose they got it during my attempt to use Google to create a login.
But I still cannot log in.
Thought I had been here longer. I followed someone over here, can't remember who it was but they aren't here anymore. Thought my first posts were just about the time NV shut down.
Some people initially came here and opened an account when the vine switch to nation format. A lot of them went back to the vine until it closed. Then already had an account just started using it again.
I didn't open an account until the vine shut down.
That is when I came to NT. Jerry Verlinger was the one who contacted me on NV and suggested I take a look at NT. I totally disliked the weird and confusing Nations BS when they made the switch, so it was not a big decision to switch to NT and I never looked back.
I came over with Grump and several others. Most migrated back to NV, but still kept their accounts here open. Several of us tried Dennis P. McCann's site for a bit, but most preferred sharing dialogue here. Right before NV closed, I think there was a mass exodus to Minds.com, but I still preferred NT.
I had a point to this, but I'll be damned if I know what it was.
I tried that Minds at first. Didn't care for it.
I took a look yesterday. I couldn't get in without signing up. There's a lot of cryptocurrency stuff going on, and that makes me nervous. I also found this Engadget article
Same here. It seemed like I accomplished very little besides blocking extreme right wing views from my newsfeed. Avowed white supremacist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic crap.
I had heard about all the racists stuff. When I was on I really didn't see much of it. It has been ages since I logged on there though.
I think last time I looked, Lebowski was the only one around there.
I also followed Laird and Soph to that Google plus account. They were suppose to open a site. I guess with all of his health problems and all, that was never meant to be.
So did I, and checked in from time to time, until Google Plus shut down.
Well guess I'm just dumb then.
I am right there with ya. Haha
I think we came here around the same time.
I took a look at Mind.com yesterday. I couldn't get in without signing up. There's a lot of cryptocurrency stuff going on, and that makes me nervous. I also found this Engadget article .
