House Dems block energy independence bill; GOP energy expert slams move as 'unconscionable'

House Democrats on Wednesday blocked consideration of a Republican bill aiming for U.S. energy independence from Russia amid the Ukraine war. A former environmental engineer now running for Congress in New Mexico condemned the move as "unconscionable" in comments to Fox News Digital.

"House Dems just voted against a measure by [House Republicans] to consider the American Energy Independence from Russia Act -- a critical bill that would unleash American energy production," Rep. Stephanie Bice, R-Okla., tweeted Wednesday. "Clearly, Dems don't care about solving our crushing energy crisis. Unbelievable!"

H.R.6858, the American Energy Independence from Russia Act, would approve the Keystone XL pipeline without a presidential permit, direct the president to commission an energy security plan, and open up oil and gas leases across the U.S., among other things. Republicans have emphasized U.S. energy production as the solution to America's importing Russian oil - which President Biden halted in an executive order this month - and to Europe's reliance on Russian oil amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Alexis Martinez Johnson, an environmental engineer and Republican candidate for New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District, slammed Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez, D-N.M., for voting to block the bill.

"This now marks the second time in as many weeks that Leger Fernandez and her radical left House Democrat allies have blocked a vote on securing energy independence," Martinez Johnson told Fox News Digital. "It is unacceptable and appalling. She is voting with special interests and against the interests of her constituents, of New Mexico, and of our nation."

Alexis Martinez Johnson, candidate for New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District (Alexis Martinez Johnson)

"Here in New Mexico, we are blessed with one of the most energy-rich and energy-diverse states in the country," Martinez Johnson said.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, New Mexico has "a wealth of fossil fuel, mineral, and renewable energy resources," along with "a significant portion of the nation's known uranium reserves." The state's crude oil, natural gas, and coal production place it in America's top 10 energy-producing states.

The Gulf Coast Project, a 485-mile crude oil pipeline being constructed by TransCanada Corp., is part of the Keystone XL Pipeline Project and will run from Cushing, Oklahoma to Nederland, Texas. "We could be powering the nation, creating high paying jobs where they are desperately needed, and reinforcing our national security all through our abundant resources," Martinez Johnson argued. "Instead, we are being drowned in high gas prices while the world becomes less stable every day. It's unconscionable."

"From my perspective as an Environmental Engineer, it is infuriating to see my neighbors suffering because Leger Fernandez refuses to help unlock our state's tremendous energy potential," the Republican added.

Fernandez's office did not immediately respond to an after-hours request for comment.

Gas prices around the world
Think you pay a lot for gas? Perhaps you'd prefer to live in Venezuela.
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) Gasoline prices in the United States, which have recently hit record highs, are actually much lower than in many countries. Drivers in some European cities, like Amsterdam and Oslo, are paying nearly 3 times more than those in the U.S.
The main factor in price disparities between countries is government policy, according to AirInc, a company that tracks the cost of living in various places around the world. Many European nations tax gasoline heavily, with taxes making up as much as 75 percent of the cost of a gallon of gasoline, said a spokesperson for AirInc.
In a few Latin America and Middle-East nations, such as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, oil is produced by a government-owned company and local gasoline prices are kept low as a benefit to the nation's citizens, he said. All prices updated March, 2005.

Yes 'people' do yet the bill doesn't mandate that ONE DROP of those recourses be delegated to the use of the AMERICAN people. In FACT, some of the provision of the bill specifically enable EXPORT.

In short, any and/or all production can be EXPORTED and sold elsewhere, having NO effect on OUR energy independence.

After investing billions in project, Kenney marks start of Keystone XL construction in Alberta | CBC News

On Friday, Kenney said his government would not rest until the full project is built and will work hard to pitch the benefits of the project to officials in the U.S.

"We will be reaching out, as we already have... to members of [Biden's] party, many of whom support the project," Kenney said, citing both lawmakers and unions.

He said the investment by his government helped get the project moving and is a "conscious risk" to create "facts on the ground" that could force the hand of any U.S. administration in overturning a project that is already partially constructed.

MORE US oil does NOT guarantee LOWER gas prices. PERIOD, full stop.

Oil is a commodity traded internationally, and it's price is control by producers and traders, NOT the US government.

There ARE countries who control their domestic gas prices since their production is controlled by the government. Shall we go there goose?

H.R.6858, the American Energy Independence from Russia Act, would approve the Keystone XL pipeline without a presidential permit, direct the president to commission an energy security plan, and open up oil and gas leases across the U.S.

Things that will not give us energy independence, nor reduce the cost of gas. That's a part of the problem. We pump out light sweet crude. Our refineries cannot process it. It gets exported outside the country and gas is imported back. What Congress could do, but won't (because they are all invested in O&G) is to pass legislation requiring a healthy percentage of gas is refined here AND provide incentives for companies to do so.

That's strange the other one works but this one doesn't. Simply enough just type in gas prices and the link pops up.

If I remember correctly, there are currently some 4000 oil and gas wells that are capped. Meaning they could produce, but they have no wellheads connecting to pipelines.

There could be more production, but that would cut into the executive suites bonuses.

"H.R.6858, the American Energy Independence from Russia Act, would approve the Keystone XL pipeline without a presidential permit, direct the president to commission an energy security plan, and open up oil and gas leases across the U.S., among other things. Republicans have emphasized U.S. energy production as the solution to America's importing Russian oil - which President Biden halted in an executive order this month - and to Europe's reliance on Russian oil amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine."

What a useless pile of shit.  The Keystone pipeline would have no benefit to the US WHATSOEVER.  Why does that keep being considered???????????????????

SO FUCKING WHAT?

Do you honestly think the American government is doing the drilling?  Why don't you ask the oil companies why they aren't drilling more?  They own plenty of land that they haven't bothered doing anything with.

No, but Biden is responsible for the new rules and regulations that make drilling cost prohibitive in many areas. Companies aren't going to drill to lose money; they have stock holders and banks to answer to just like any other major corporation.

Why don't you ask the oil companies why they aren't drilling more?

Why should we? It isn't our damn job. But it is Biden's job. So why hasn't he sat down with US oil companies and asked them with the price of a barrel of oil so damn high why they haven't increased production? Instead he is sniping at them; and accusing them of price gouging US citizens. Could it be because he already knows the damn answer? That his policies have made it cost prohibitive and the price per barrel will have to climb much higher for them to move. That they will request he temporarily remove the new rules and regulations he put in place. That Biden will then have to face down the hard left wac jobs in his own party to reduce prices.

They own plenty of land that they haven't bothered doing anything with.

Land doesn't = oil. Little things like how deep it is buried. What type of sediment and rock; or if there is an untapped water reserve in the path, they have to drill through or around. Is there enough oil present to even bother drilling? Then they have to get funding to move the rig in place; set up all the environmental control measures; and allocate personnel. Too many leftists think they can just drop a rig and start drilling anywhere.

Biden would rather talk to third world dictators that hate the US and offer them anything they want than to actually talk to US oil companies directly. That should tell everyone all they need to know.

You claimed that twice.

Please post a link to these prohibitive policies you speak of. If that information is within a large document [doubtful] please cite the page or quote the paragraph.

I'll wait but won't be holding my breath.

List them and link to them.

Because you're the ones bitching about us needing more drilling in the US.

Land doesn't = oil. Little things like how deep it is buried. What type of sediment and rock; or if there is an untapped water reserve in the path, they have to drill through or around.

Then why did they buy/lease that land?  Don't you think they do geological surveys at the sites, before they purchase/lease the land????

You could explain HOW US oil companies will control the PRICE of oil Ronin? Please be specific.

We are and can be only as "energy independent" as the oil and gas companies allow us to be.  "We" don't own the oil and gas.  The companies that drill and extract the oil and gas own it and can then do whatever they want with it and sell it wherever they want to in order to maximize their profits.

Nevertheless, Joe is the Current Occupant and will receive the lion's share of the blame for the worst inflation in 40 years, especially affecting energy prices...just like Trump would have been, had he been reelected.

He will receive the blame from right wingers who never blamed Trump for anything while he was POTUS.  That's just what right wingers do.  Just like the ones that blame 9/11 on Obama .

Up until the pandemic and the panic of it from the left the economy was excellent, oil prices were down, unemployment was down, inflation was low, we didn't abandon citizens, green card holders and others legally able to enter the US in a country to be hunted down, Russia did not invade an independent country and issue threats to the rest of the world, China did not threaten the rest of the world if they assisted Taiwan militarily.

He moved our embassy in Israel from TelAviv to Jerusalem where it belongs. He nominated three excellent choices for the Supreme Court. He started the border wall. He started deported illegal aliens that had already been told to leave the country. He fat tracked the COVID vaccine with Operation Warp Speed.

He also beat possibly the worst candidate for president the democrats ever proposed.

Just what were we supposed to blame him for?
