TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida Sen. Jason Brodeur (R-Lake Mary) wants bloggers who write about Gov. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and other members of the Florida executive cabinet or legislature to register with the state or face fines.
Brodeur's proposal, Senate Bill 1316: Information Dissemination, would require any blogger writing about government officials to register with the Florida Office of Legislative Services or the Commission on Ethics.
In the bill, Brodeur wrote that those who write "an article, a story, or a series of stories," about "the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, a Cabinet officer, or any member of the Legislature," and receives or will receive payment for doing so, must register with state offices within five days after the publication of an article that mentions an elected state official.
If another blog post is added to a blog, the blogger would then be required to submit monthly reports on the 10th of each month with the appropriate state office. They would not have to submit a report on months when no content is published.
For blog posts that "concern an elected member of the legislature" or "an officer of the executive branch," monthly reports must disclose the amount of compensation received for the coverage, rounded to the nearest $10 value.
If compensation is paid for a series of posts or for a specific amount of time, the blogger would be required to disclose the total amount to be received, upon publication of the first post in said series or timeframe.
Additional compensation must be disclosed later on.
Failure to file these disclosures or register with state officials, if the bill passes, would lead to daily fines for the bloggers, with a maximum amount per report, not per writer, of $2,500. The per-day fine is $25 per report for each day it's late.
The bill also requires that bloggers file notices of failure to file a timely report the same way that lobbyists file their disclosures and reports on assessed fines. Fines must be paid within 30 days of payment notice, unless an appeal is filed with the appropriate office. Fine payments must be deposited into the Legislative Lobbyist Registration Trust Fund if it concerns an elected member of the legislature.
For writing about members of the executive branch, fines would be made payable to the Executive Branch Lobby Registration Trust Fund or, if it concerns both groups, the fine may be paid to both related trust funds in equal amounts.
Explicitly, the blogger rule would not apply to newspapers or similar publications, under Brodeur's proposed legislation.
In addition to the blogger regulations, the bill also removes provisions of state statutes to require judicial notices of sales to be published on publicly accessible websites, and specifies that a government agency can publish legally required advertisements and public notices on county sites if the cost is not paid by or recovered from an individual.
Should the bill pass, it would take effect immediately upon approval.
Florida is in the process of divorcing itself from America.
yeah, no 1st amendment issues there...
ron desantis = wussolini
less government, more freedom... bwah ha ha ha ha ha
Although during my lifetime I've spent a fair amount of time in Florida, even owned with my brother a golf condo there that we inherited from our parents, I haven't set foot in that state for at least a quarter of a century, if not longer, and from the things that have been reported about the present government I sure as hell wouldn't want to go there again.
Anyone know why right wingers are so thin skinned? Genetics?
mushy brain matter?

I suspect it is mainly their 3rd grade maturity level.
Been to the Keys many times and don't care for the police state that exists in the North.
I live in northeast Florida and have since I was a small child
How about showing some proof of these "police states" you are are so delighted to declare in the north part of Florida.
The land of mullets and methheads? Referring to North/East Florida?
LOL!
it's where the rain comes down like sheets, and vice versa...
A lot of people will say good riddance.
fuck that, it's the maga fascists that need to leave. voluntarily or feet first.

And who do you imagine these mythical people to be?
sorry, I'm too old to help you move...
When my daughter and SIL moved from their 3rd floor apartment they hired movers. When they moved into the apartment the whole family helped them and we bitched and bitched and bitched....
my kids have treated me like I was 100 years old for the last 10+ years.
Thankfully I have no kids and nobody who dares to call me ancient.
Only thing that sucks worse than moving is helping someone move.
People showing up to help friends move is an urban legend. It never happens. As if friend suddenly owed them money...
Cockroaches first.
And the republicans cheer.
And those on the fence question others...
Maybe some people will tell me I am over reacting and need to delve deeper into it...
Will this apply to those that don't live in FL?
That's a really good question
Pretty sure that poison doesn't respect borders TOM.
Interestingly authoritarian, but I don't think monetized blogging is a really big business in FL at the moment. Then again what's this clown's definition of blogger? Is anyone that writes an article here a blogger? Someone with a YouTube channel? A website that works off of Patreon donations? If the Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida puts out their newsletter are they subject to this law?
First I don't think it will work as intendent and second has the potential to be blocked by the first judge it comes before. Poor conservative populist snowflakes...
Another bill Sponsored by one person with no chance to Become lawthat is used to attack republicans in general or, now, desantis.
must be a day that ends in y.
Jason Brodeur has sponsored a number of bills that have become law ... one might say he's on a streak.
Broduer's bill supported by no one generated its 24 hours of outrage on the left. Something shiny will be along soon to distract and enrage the ever angry left and this guy's filing will never be heard of again, except in rage filled blogs on Dailykos where it will be cited as evidence that DeSantis is Hitler.
It's interesting how completely predictable your comments are, but at least you now admit that the GOP is the incubator for totally idiotic, batshit crazy ideas.
Why do you think I have most of these people on ignore? I have neither the patience or the crayons to explain the facts of life to them
unamerican POS needs to go skinny dipping in the everglades with the rest of the rwnj florida legislature. the only tweaks the 1st amendment needs all concern religion.
No surprise you seeded this. [Deleted]

“…most of these people on ignore?”
…too many live in that precarious position between arrogance and ignorance…leaving any comment in the always unjustifiable position between parroting and partisanship.
When flippancy is the only currency, they are left intellectually bankrupt.

It amazes me that people don't see the potential for abuse here. It's like some folks just don't value their First Amendment rights at all.
Or they don't understand what they are. Or they are too chicken shit to stand up to bullies like this guy. Or they never paid attention in their history classes.
or they have very low IQs
Or all of the above.
I'm yet to be convinced anybody is taking the idea seriously.
It's the idea, Jack, that one person would have the unmitigated gall to propose something like this. An elected official who should know the words of his state constitution.
See Tacos comment at
It's disturbing that a member of a legislative body would have so little respect for the Constitution as to even introduce such a bill, or that people would place him in a position to do so.
Right.

You might want to use a different source as foxnews hosts regularly lie. It's owner has admitted this under oath. foxnews is dead.
I don't recall seeing that story here, but that would also be unconstitutional.
[✘]
You just said it.... "one person". What about a single person having a crazy idea is so alarming? Individual people have batshit ideas all the time.
Serious question.... why is this foolishness somehow more problematic than any of the other foolishness that we encounter every minute of every day?
MGT wants a "national divorce", AOC wants to spend 20 years worth of tax revenue, Gavin Newsome wants to pay people for being black while his state runs $40 billion in the red. Hank Thompson wants to move troops off of Guam so it doesn't tip over (true story).
Elected officials say spectacularly stupid shite all the time. They propose utterly unconstitutional nonsense all of the time. Why would this crackpot matter any more than any of the others?
Just because it is Florida.
Some are having difficulty with Florida voting red.
Well... as we discussed in the other seed... we live in the Idiocracy. So I'm not sure why a story about one particular idiot would be disturbing.
I'm not sure it goes that deep. I think some folks have just reached a state where any time they hear any story about any Republican, they just automatically start thinking "Handmaid's Tale".

fox news is your source? LOL

Huh ?
They elected MTG, Boebert, Santos and Trump.
Unfortunately, far right-wing fascism is alive and well in the US.
It's being taken very seriously in Florida, one of a few wacked out bills that are being presented.
I can google news stories about this which is to be expected. But I don't find stories that show this is being taken very seriously anywhere in Florida. Can you provide any?
This bill will probably never pass due to it's 1st Amendment issues.
DeSantis is taking it seriously and, if elected President, will take it nationwide. Is that what you want?
Since I live in Florida I certainly can. The local republican club in our community is all for this bill even though it violates both the federal and state constitution. But then again we have four Proud Boys on the Miami Dade Republican executive committee.
We aim to please the many nut cases that live in Florida.
I'm not saying they don't but do you have any links to stories that support this? I can only find news stories that talk about the bill itself but don't provide any indication of the level of support. As this is so obviously against both the US Constitution and the Florida State Constitution, I don't understand how this could have much support. The legislative site shows this has no co-sponsors so it seems to have little support within Florida government itself. The bill has been filed but that's about all that has happened to it, not assigned to any committee. I suspect this will just die.
Always defending the indefensible
Hopefully, it will just die, but with much of the craziness going on in Florida, I'm not going to count on it.
My experience with this bill is our local Republican club that supports it and if nothing else in Florida all the crazy assholes seem to be in the forefront. Here is another, HB999.
I didn't defend that fucking bill, in fact I quite clearly called it unconstitutional and I said that I expect the bill to just die.
What I was asking for is any links that show the local GOP factors actually supporting this bill because all I can find on Google is articles that talk about the bill but nothing about who supports it other than the person to submitted it.
I thought you weren't going to respond to me.
You as usual resort to insults.
Wow, what a mouthful that bill is. While I support the increase in education dealing with STEM, and I agree that it's a good thing that at least 25 percent of degrees will be in the highest full-time job placement and only 10% of degrees are for the lowest full-time job placement and lowest earnings (educating to allow students to both reach their potential as well as with a degree that will actually allow them to support themselves) it should be pointed out that this was in the prior bill and is not a new addition to this latest HB999 bill.
I do have a concern about the substance of the bill. While there have been stories about how biased some college teaching is with regards to CRT, it seems to me that college should be where students are introduced to all ideas and allowed to discuss and grow. I'm not a fan of all of CRT but I don't support any program that removes the ability for a student to freely learn and discuss new ideas. The world requires that people be able to think for themselves and putting a muzzle on the education process at the college / university level really seems like a bad idea to me. So long as it's taught honestly and fully and not from a biased perspective that is.
Citizens not being able to think for themselves reminds me of the current Republican and Democrat parties (as well as a few members on this board).

Citizens not being able to think for themselves reminds me of the current republicans as well as a few members on this board which includes those same few members always defending the indefensible.
Describe "taken seriously".
I'm using the phrase along the lines of "consider it promising, viable legislation".
What has he said? Has he endorsed the idea? Citation?
That just sounds hysterical. Seriously, that just sounds like those people who rant about how The Handmade's Tale will all come true if we ever elect another Republican.
Yep. All these horrific things that a Republican president will do/cause if elected to office... Kind of like the long list of things that the Democrats promised Trump would do if he were elected in 2016. None of the things they promised did in fact happen but it doesn't seem to stop them from trying the same playbook again. After all, that's how you win elections. Scare people with over-the-top predictions if "that guy" is elected.
TBF, I've heard some ridiculous fears about Democratic presidents as well. Obama was going to seize all our guns, etc. Ludicrous.
I guess I just don't understand the whole fear-based mentality.
fear is how to sell intangibles...
Fear has been how politics has been run for quite a while now. And you're correct, Republicans do the same play that Democrats do with the fear mongering. IMO it gets in the way of determining exactly who to vote for.
Yup.
I guess you're right. I just don't understand how people manage to become afraid of some of the things they do.
Why don't you ask the ones constantly posting about teaching CRT and LGBTQ grooming our kids?
Is the idea that one side's irrationality justifies the other?
No. But it would behoove you to see the irrationality from the right side of NT for once
"Irrationality" resides in the brain of the beholder.
I argue against it far more often than you do the irrationality from the left. Admittedly it's a low bar because as far as I can tell your sum total so far is zero. Not only that, you actively interfere on their behalf.
So it might behoove you to practice a little of what you preach.
No, you never ever 'argue against' the republicans/gop/the former 'president' whatever the subject. It's always defense of the indefensible and Democrats/Liberals/Progressives bad.
I can do without your insults. If you can't speak to me in a more polite tone, then let's not communicate at all
And no, you don't. You berate the left far more than you do the right.
I'm not sure how using the same tone you did constitutes an insult.... unless of course....
Left-wing nonsense seems to be excused far more often than right-wing nonsense is. So yeah, I point it out more often.
I voted for Joe Biden and Colin Allred, so I get to bitch about the party I'm now voting for when they do stupid things. Not sorry.
BTW, If I'm wrong about you never criticizing anything or anyone liberal, by all means, show me.
You mean because reproductive rights are illegal in about half the states? Maybe you haven't heard about the women who actually needed abortions and nearly died? They are testifying this week.
So.... a court ruling produced in a constitutionally prescribed process was overturned by another court ruling produced in the same constitutionally prescribed process... and this somehow means the constitution will be abolished if Ron De Santis wins the presidential election??
Do you hear yourself?
Florida Republicans file a 6-week abortion ban bill, which DeSantis has said he'd sign
The White House quickly criticized the legislation.
Florida Republicans filed legislation to impose a six-week abortion ban on Tuesday , during the first moments of the state Legislature's 2023 session -- a bill that Gov. Ron DeSantis has said he would sign should it be sent to his desk.
"We're for pro-life. I urge the legislature to work, produce good stuff, and we will sign," DeSantis said during a February briefing when asked if he would approve a so-called heartbeat bill that would ban abortions after six weeks.
The state currently prohibits almost all abortions after 15 weeks, restrictions that were put in place in July as the state appealed after a judge's ruling that the law violated the state's constitution.
A bill of which you disapprove may be signed into law. That's actually how democracies work.
Still curious as to how that signals the end of free speech in America.
Your comments are all over the place.
First, it's 'The Handmaid's Tale' becoming reality.
Next, it's the Constitution will be abolished.
Now, it's the end of free speech.
ALL of the above are strawmen since no one made ANY of those arguments yet you seem to want someone to answer for them.
I'm quite sure you think so.
So.... zero familiarity with the Handmaid's Tale, then.
I would explain it all to you.... but you obviously haven't read it carefully. Try it again and see if the penny drops.
What part of my comment lead you to that unfounded conclusion?
I pointed out your strawman arguments, no explanation needed.
1A is priceless when dealing with thumpers...
2A will be soon...

Geez Louise! How many ways can you say “unconstitutional?” Or as the kids would say today, “tell me you hate the Constitution, Freedom, and Fundamental Rights without telling me . . . “
You get the idea.
I don’t think I need to quote the US Constitution. Instead, this is from the Florida State Constitution (my bolding):
We have the one.... did we need extras?
It’s like I get it when maybe states disagree with something in federal law. Maybe there’s a state that doesn’t protect speech or writing in its constitution (though I doubt it). So maybe that state doesn’t think the amendments should apply to the states. That’s a legitimate point of view.
But here? Here, I would say the Florida constitution has language protecting speech that is stronger than the federal constitution.
DeSantis needs all of the protection/adoration he can get. He's still on untethered ground seeing as how the 'golf cart army' still possesses all of those Chinese made Trump flags.
DeSantis should use his head and contact Ivanka about some of her Chinese patents. Perhaps they can work out a deal so DeSantis can get his own DeSantis Chinese flags for the Florida 'golf cart army'.
As far as DeSantis wanting bloggers to register with the state if his name is used, there again is a golden opportunity. A $5 dollar a month fee for the rights for his name will add handsomely to his personal coffers. Surprised he can't see this.
You’ve been bamboozled by dishonest left wing media. Desantis has nothing to do With this bill.
Shame people resort to that, but it is what is.
Where in the media was DeSantis linked to this bill?
How do you know that DeSantis has nothing to do with this bill?
What proof do you have of either one of your claims?
The proof/answer you seek would be 'none and none'.
Hot air with no proof is par for the course for some, G.
This is another one that DeSantis is pushing.
All that PD&D from DeSantis. So typical of today's republicans/gop/gqp.
Where in the media was DeSantis linked to this bill?
Lol. Devangical did it for me.
w do you know that DeSantis has nothing to do with this bill?
Because there is zero evidence that exists that DeSantis supports the bill.
This is pure NT Gold.
How embarrassing for you, since you made the claim.
Recall writing this? :"As far as DeSantis wanting bloggers to register with the state if his name is used,"
You guys make it too easy.
What's embarrassing is using foxnews as a source.
Lol. Fox provided a link to a law proposed by a Democrat! the horror!
In this very thread you have MSNBC pushing a fake narrative and it doesn't bother you a bit. So forgive if I don't take your outrage over Fox very seriously.
People should be embarrassed when they link to false or made up news. Facts are facts and it doesn't matter who links to them. If you can prove something wrong I linked to, please do it.
shhhhh, nobody that watches fox knows about that fox/murdoch story...
Keep laughing.
I second Sean's LOL.
Desantis didn't write the bill per se but if you don't think he's behind it you're dreaming.
esantis didn't write the bill per se but if you don't think he's behind it you're dreaming.
That's an example of conspiracy thinking.
Looks like we have a new commander of the tin foil hat brigade.
Has Desantis come out and said the bill was unconstitutional ? He hasn't said a word even though this story is at the top of almost all media.
Conspiracy thinking is thinking foxnews trustworthy after Murdock told you in plain english it is not.
BS. This is the only place I have seen this. I live in Florida, watch most of the local news, read their web pages, and have not seen it anywhere.
Looks like the only place you see it is in triggered leftist sites.
Yep!
[Deleted]
It seems that you didn't look very hard. It's all over the news in Florida.
Even Fox is carrying the story.
Thanks for making my point. Everyone of those sources are left wing.
You know, the triggered ones I posted about. At least 2 of them are published in cities that voted for Crist.
Thanks again.
Nice try but a complete fail on your part. BTW, Fox News isn't left wing just fricking liars.
Yes, Fox "news" is definitely left wing.
Trump has been calling Fox "liberal". If Trump says it, and you're QLoon MAGA cultist, it must be true.
Nice try but you added Fox after I responded to all of your left wing sources.
When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of losers.
- Socrates
LMAO, you really are desperate to try and pull that piece of BS, but not unexpected from one that is always ''right''...Seems that you have to keep up the pretense that you always win debates on NT even though it's only in your mind.
So what Socrates was saying is leftists tend to lose every debate because when it is obvious they are losing, they go straight to name calling....nazis, racists, white supremacists....you name it...if it is derogatory, leftists will call you it.....and Lord help us it the debater is a minority conservative...then they REALLY go into a frenzy.
My comment stands. I do win most debates on here.....
This one is no different.
You do have a fertile imagination, as you seem to invent things that I never said to you. Thereby enforcing Socrates' description of those that need slander to try and make a point.
I'm sure that you think you win most debates on here but to anyone reading the comments, I'm sure that they find that you are a legend in your own mind...
Never said you did. I said MOST liberals.
"I'm sure that they find that you are a legend in your own mind..."
I can assure you that winning debates with leftists here is probably the easiest thing I do.
No, you didn't but it's not surprising that you'd try that BS again.
I'm sure that it is in your mind.
care to share some links to where that has ever happened here on NT? your thinking that you have ever won a debate here is the easiest thing you've ever done.
Never
He's projecting, deflecting, and denying - all they got.
I haven't seen him win any debates but I have seen plenty of insults from him
He must be talking about Fox News?
Interesting how no one on the right has posted anything about that.
if they don't talk about it, they can claim it never happened...
Been watching Fox again?
now they're claiming what happened on 1/6 is what we were led to believe. Unreal.
The people who invaded the Capitol were just "average tourists" who wanted to hang Mike Pence.
Isn't that what most tourists are thinking when they visit D.C.?
mmmm...I don't know about you but I like to go in the spring for the cherry blossoms
One of my students attended the cherry blossom festivities in Tokyo.
He advised that it was the best celebration of anything he had ever seen.
It's on my bucket list.
Q. Why is the second amendment called the second amendment?
A. Because there was already a first amendment.
The entire reason for the first amendment is so that the people can criticize the government. The inevitable court challenge will certainly shoot this down. If it doesn't I would expect Biden to do the same thing nationwide.
How would you like that?
The White-wing knuckle draggers want to "dox" everyone who criticizes Fascists like DeSantis.
Later they can round them up and send them off to luxurious "summer camps."
that should also give everyone a whole new perspective on why rwnj's got so upset when they thought their gas ovens were going away...
Did you notice the new uniforms and boots?
Yeah, Little Ricky DeSantis was wearing his new uniform and boots.
That's something we really didn't need to see...
Them boots were made for walkin far away from me!
I kind of want a wall sized poster. Need a new BBgun target.
That must be hard on your walls.
You ever see the Shawshank Redemption?
Massive first amendment violation that will be blown away in court.
apparently the rwnj constitution only allows freedom of speech that excludes any speech about them...

I enjoy writing drivel on NewsTalkers. I'm not really sure what "bloggers" are. Aren't "bloggers" the disgusting green blobs that sometimes come out of nostrils?
Ron DeSantis and his fellow fascists in the Florida legislature love to attack the First Amendment. They have no respect for the US Constitution. I'm sure this proposed law is fucking unconstitutional.
I wasn't planning to write about DeSantis again butt this shit pisses me off so I've decided that it's my duty to mock and ridicule Wussolini* to the max. So now I'm going to a whole series of articles about DeSantis.

Cancel culture gone wild! How did Republicans completely about face and go from "Freedoms" to "Dictator"? I have never seen Republicans go so wild on cancelling Americans choice over so many issues. They have completely abandoned the concept of freedom and choices. While we are still able to buy alcohol, how long until these rabid right wing nuts going to go before they bring back the "Prohibition Era". Take away the right to have an alcoholic beverage because religious folks don't want it around? That is exactly where they are going on many of our American freedoms and rights.
