One man was the beloved owner of a Louisville barbecue restaurant who made sure to provide free meals to officers. Another was a man known as "Mr. Indianapolis," a former star football player. Yet another was a federal officer working security during a protest.

They are among the people who have been killed as protests roiled American cities in the week since 46-year-old George Floyd died when a white officer jammed his knee into the back of the black man's neck.

The deaths have at times been overshadowed by the shocking images of chaos engulfing cities across America, from heavy-handed riot police tactics to violence, vandalism and arson. Tens of thousands have marched peacefully in demonstrations against police brutality and racism.

Many of the people killed were African Americans, compounding the tragedy for black families to lose more members of their community amid the unrest.

Dozens more have been hurt in various altercations — vehicles plowing into crowds, police officers suffering head injuries and broken bones and protesters ending up in emergency rooms with a variety of injuries from the melees.

The death toll and circumstances surrounding the killings are still being sorted out in many cities, but here is what we know about the cases so far:

LOUISVILLE

As local police and the National Guard sought to disperse a crowd early Monday, they heard gunshots and returned fire, killing the owner of a barbecue restaurant, David McAtee. The mayor has since terminated the city's police chief after finding out that officers on the scene did not activate their body cameras. The state police and the U.S. attorney also are investigating.

The 53-year-old McAtee was an African American man known for offering free meals to officers who stopped by.

"We lost a wonderful citizen named David McAtee," Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said. "David was a friend to many, a well-known Barbecue man."

The protests in Louisville have centered not just on Floyd's killing but also the death of Breonna Taylor, a black woman killed in her home in Louisville in March. The 26-year-old EMT was shot eight times by narcotics detectives who knocked down her front door as they attempted to enforce a search warrant. No drugs were found in the home.

___

OAKLAND

A federal law enforcement officer was providing security at the federal courthouse in Oakland during a protest when someone fired shots from a vehicle.

Dave Patrick Underwood, 53, died and another officer was critically injured in the shooting.

It was not immediately clear if the drive-by shooting was related to the protests, though the federal building's glass doors were smashed and the front entrance was sprayed with anti-police graffiti.

Underwood, who was black, and the other officer were contracted security officers and employed by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Protective Service; they were monitoring a nearby protest.

No one has been arrested and a motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.

Underwood was the brother of Angela Underwood Jacobs, recently a Republican candidate to fill a vacant U.S. congressional district north of Los Angeles.

INDIANAPOLIS

Two people were killed over the weekend amid unrest in Indianapolis, including 38-year-old Chris Beaty, a former offensive lineman for Indiana University.

Beaty was known as "Mr. Indianapolis" and remained involved with the Hoosiers long after his graduation. He also was a prominent businessman in the city and ran multiple nightclubs.

"His life was cut short but his legacy will live on"
From Cathedral HS to the Hoosiers, Chris Beaty left behind friends wherever he went.
As a local businessman he befriended many on our news team.
Sadly, he was murdered near his downtown apartment over the weekend.#chrisbeatypic.twitter.com/nS3mHrTrDd
— Jesse Wells (@JesseWellsNews) June 1, 2020

"I am at a loss for words. The news of the passing of Chris Beaty is just devastating," coach Tom Allen said in a statement. "Since I returned home to coach at Indiana, Chris embraced me, encouraged me and supported me! His passion for life and Indiana Football energized me every time we were together."

The circumstances of his shooting weren't immediately clear but some media reports said it happened near an apartment where he lived. It also occurred the same night that an 18-year-old man also was fatally shot as protests broke out in the city.

___

MINNEAPOLIS

In what is believed to be the first killing since the protests broke out, a 43-year-old black man was fatally shot outside a pawn shop as rioting broke out last week in Minneapolis and then spread nationally.

The owner of the pawn shop, who is white, was arrested in the death of Calvin L. Horton Jr. Police say they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing, including whether it was related to protests in the neighborhood.

The shop was described as having been significantly damaged during unrest.

___

OMAHA, NEBRASKA

A 22-year-old black man was killed after authorities said he tussled with the owner of two bars in downtown Omaha. Surveillance video of the strip of bars shows a group of people, including James Scurlock, approach bar owner Jake Gardner.

Two people are seen on the video tackling Gardner, who ended up on his back and fired shots in the air. Seconds later, Scurlock is seen tackling Gardner, who then fires the gun over his shoulder, striking Scurlock.

Authorities have declined to press charges, calling the shooting self-defense.

I chose this article from the Huffington Post to start keeping track of the death count caused by these "peaceful" protests!

This does not include those maimed, loss of income, loss of property and fear generated.

Trump is off topic

Of course many of these deaths were the result of crimes that would have occurred even if there were no protests. Even many of the shootings at the protests are likely grudges or gang shootings and the protests are just bringing people who wouldn't normally cross paths into the same area. When a City descends into chaos it's a good opportunity for local criminals to rob and murder because it's harder to convict them when the defense has the Violent Mob to blame.

In that case they are a result of the "protests" which do seem to turn violent each and every night.

Funny how silent liberals are on these deaths. If its a white supremacist rally and even 1 person dies it gets insane media coverage and outrage. It's a BLM rally or antifa protest the death count doesn't even seem to be something that is talked about. Sickening.

It'll really kick in when these protestors get infected and then infect the elderly in their families and they start dying off.

Which will be ...... absolutely unconscionable.    But what do they care?   They got their narcissist on ......

Unless the left can use that to get back on the vote-by-mail push by saying that proves the virus is still such a horrid issue that we need that national vote-by-mail process.   Give em time,  I bet someone will loop back to it.

LOL

these protests will produce a nominal spike in cases at best and will show this virus plan-panic to be a waste of time.

I wonder if the rioters know the damage they cause is helping our economy to rebound when we need it most?

over a billion in damages = and then everything will be rebuilt brand new in just a few months time.

The mayor of DC absolutely resists any attempt to stop it. As a detail of Secret Service agents risked their lives to defend the President and his family, the mayor has, at long last, offered 1,000 UNARMED officers to defend the White House.

All I can say is it's a good thing in many states gun shops are considered essential and covid didn't close them down. I really wish every state had make my day protection because the government has been a total failure at protecting the communities.

The Daily Caller put the death list at 15:

David Dorn , 77, died  Tuesday  while trying to protect Lee’s Pawn Jewelry from looters. He served 38 years at the St. Louis Police Department before retiring. He died in the middle of a street after being shot in the torso by suspected rioters, according to the police incident report. The slaying was caught on Facebook Live, according to the  St.Louis Dispatch

Barry Perkins , 29, died after getting stuck on the converter dolly between a FedEx truck’s trailers while the driver of the truck pulled away. The driver, who was rerouted because of the protests, said he didn’t know the man was there. People began “removing items” from the truck and two men standing on the passenger side showed the driver they had guns, so the driver feared for his life, honked the horn and started driving until he was stopped by police. By the time police stopped the truck, Perkins had gotten caught by the trailer tire and was run over, according to  KSDK

David McAtee , 53, the owner of a barbecue restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky, was killed after police and National Guard members opened fire at a protest. The National Guard was sent to disperse a crowd and said they were shot at, which prompted them to return fire.  McAtee’s sister  told  WAVE 3 News  that the crowd gathered at the scene of the shooting did not relate to the protests, and was there meeting at his restaurant.

Dorian Murrell , 18, was shot and killed by Tyler Newby, 29, in Indianapolis. Newby and his friend told police that they were walking around Downtown after the protests, found a gas canister on the ground and picked it up. They said after doing so, they were approached by a group of about 10 males who asked them what they found. Newby said he was pushed to the ground, pulled out his gun and shot the person standing over him. Murrell’s family member at the scene said there was no physical altercation, according to  Indy Star .

Italia Kelly , 22, was shot and killed during a protest in Davenport, Iowa while she was leaving Monday night. Investigators have not identified the shooter. Kelly’s family says she was protesting peacefully and got tangled in the violence, according to  KCRG

Marquis M. Tousant , 23, was shot and killed Monday in Davenport, Iowa after police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle, before their car was fired upon multiple times, according to  WQAD . Police found   a semi-automatic handgun underneath Tousant’s body and multiple shell casings surrounding his body. Tousant was also seen on video with a gun at a shooting outside a jewelry store that night. It’s unclear whose weapon fired the shot that killed him, according to   QC Times .

Calvin L. Horton Jr ., 43, was fatally shot near the police department’s Third Precinct in Minneapolis in what is believed to be the first killing since the protests began according to Minnesota’s  CBS affiliate

James Scurlock , 22, was fatally shot by a bar owner during a fight with several people Saturday night in Omaha, Nebraska, amid protests. Charges weren’t brought against the shooter, Jake Gardner, who was determined to have acted in self-defense. Gardner’s father had pushed several protesters when asking them to leave the bar.

Victor Cazares , 27, was shot and killed in Chicago during rioting, which was ruled a homicide by the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The town spokesperson said the shootings were caused by “outside agitators who were driving through Cicero seeking to cause trouble,” according to the  Chicago Sun Times .

Patrick Underwood , 53, was an officer in the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Protective Service who was gunned down Friday as he stood guard outside the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Oakland, Calif. amid protesting.  A second federal officer was shot with him but was not killed.  Oakland police chief said the shooting was most likely deliberately targeting uniformed officers, according to the  Wall Street Journal

Jorge Gomez,  25, was shot and killed by Las Vegas police during Monday night’s protests near the federal courthouse in downtown Las Vegas. Gomez was wearing body armor and armed with three weapons during the protests, and raised his weapon toward officers,  LVMPD  said according to  News 3 Las Vegas

Not yet named : 29-year-old Chicago man was shot and killed in what was ruled a homicide and attributed to “outside agitators” during the riots, according to the  Chicago Sun Times .
