The NYPD Anti-crime Unit Is Being Disbanded
I am at loss for words. The anti-crime units were the guys that were self motivated and went out to do the right thing. Stopping violent crime was their M.O. This is a bad move by Shea, it's gonna have repercussions that will he felt throughout the city.

The NYPD plain clothes anti-crime unit is being disbanded, NYPD leadership announced on Monday, with all 600 officers are being reassigned to other units.

"Thankfully, here in New York City, angry demonstrations have turned peaceful," NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said at a Monday press conference. "Thoughtful discussions about reform have emerged. We welcome reform, but we also believe that meaningful reform starts from within."

The immediate reaction on Twitter is one of concern.

No words for this.
Far and away the most effective units in the NYPD.
The city is lost. https://t.co/mk27zTxtRN

Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed "the most aggressive" police reforms in the country, repealing the 50-a law, which keeps officers' disciplinary records secret. He threatened to cut funding to any police agency that doesn't make the necessary changes. He signed additional reforms today.

Today I will sign additional police reforms:
-Police must report a weapon discharge within 6 hrs
-Police depts & courts must track arrest data, including race/ethnicity
-Police must provide for the medical & mental health needs of those under arrest or in custody who require it

— Andrew Cuomo (@NYGovCuomo) June 15, 2020

A few days before all the new legislation, Cuomo blamed the police department for the violent protests that have swept the city. He later apologized.

Police departments are beginning to be dismantled and defunded across the country. In Minneapolis, where George Floyd was killed by a group of police officers while in custody, the city council has voted to abolish the police department. In Seattle, people have kicked the police out of an area they have termed the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone. Julio was reporting for us from CHAZ for several surreal days. President Trump has threatened to send in the National Guard if the city doesn't stop the rebellion.

"You have a governor that doesn't do a damn thing about it, and you have a mayor that doesn't know she's alive...If they don't do the job, I'll do the job," Trump said at a roundtable on Monday.

The nation's largest and most sophisticated police department is now being partially defunded and downsized. A progressive governor, who has made some egregious errors during his term, has now caved in to the demands of the most potent political force in America right now - Black Lives Matter!

False.

TRUE ....The defunding & downsizing is coming:

"Sunday, de Blasio announced a series of police reforms, including a shift in funding from the  NYPD  to youth and social services, moving the enforcement for street vending out of the NYPD to a civilian agency, and adding community ambassadors to the NYPD to serve as liaisons between officers and New Yorkers."

"The mayor did not say how much funding the city would cut from the NYPD’s $6 billion annual budget to give to social services, CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reports.

“The details will be worked out in the budget process in the weeks ahead. But I want people to understand that we are committed to shifting resources to ensure that the focus is on our young people,” de Blasio said."

Don't you know that only applies to conservatives? If it had been a group gathering at a church trying to defy the order they would have been cracked down on to the full extent of Cuomo's law.

The left seem to think they are immune to Covid-19. They all think the leftist protesters are not spreading the disease. It is only conservative protests that do that; and those wishing to work; that are capable of spreading the disease. State reopening their economy is the cause of the uptick in Covid-19 cases. Not the protests. Just ask any Democrat.

The left seem to think they are immune to Covid-19

Kevin Williamson had a nice piece on the magical thinking that has supplanted reason on the left:

And so we must rely on the ladies and gentlemen in Washington to interpret the scriptures for us. Can we trust them to be honest brokers and evenhanded? Consider that the day before yesterday, gathering for a church service was a crime against humanity and getting a haircut in Georgia was to offer human sacrifice to Mammon. And then — poof! — gathering in gigantic crowds of non-socially distanced, sweaty protesters chanting and looting and rioting and burning was an absolute necessity for the survival of democracy and the cause of genuine justice. Consider that the right to keep and bear arms, which is actually found in the Constitution, is severely limited (unless you are leading a left-wing militia uprising in Seattle!), but the right to an abortion, which is found nowhere in the Constitution, is considered virtually absolute. “You can’t see the emperor’s new clothes? Well, we know what you are, then!”

We've entered a time of collective madness.  In a time of an epidemic, riots are good!, walking on a beach? That's mass murder!

Cuomo and others of his ilk only apply laws selectively, while his "Base" gets to do whatever they want. Laws for thee and not for me should be the Democrats  rally cry in 2020.  What honest person would want to serve in a police department when the only way to do your job is act dishonestly?

I'm not sure what you are asking. In New York they have a relatively new law which means that protesters/rioters arrested on one night get released the next day. I'm not sure it is easy to make arrests with the huge protests/riots we've seen. I do know in the cases where federal law has been violated there have been arrests and indictments already.

Polls show about 2/3s of Americans supporting the protesters, and about 1/4 against. The majority understand that there's a problem.

Trump rallies are interesting in that their purpose does not seem to be to present policies, or explain actions. They are more of a mutual masturbation situation. -Police depts & courts must track arrest data, including race/ethnicity

Welcome to the new quotas. Where police will be tracked for what percentage of each race they arrest. Arrest too many African Americans and face the consequences. "Sorry your store was being robbed; but I already reach my quota for that segment of the population. Don't worry, I already have a call into the station to try and get an officer to come out whose quota is more in line with the standard."

-Police must provide for the medical & mental health needs of those under arrest or in custody who require it

I am sure the state will pay for the medical and pysch training so they can handle the requirements. With the pay increase for each officer to go along with it. The departments will also have a hotline with qualified medical professionals there 24/7 to assist them with any cases that go beyond standard EMP training? Cuomo must have put money into his reform bill for all of that./S

Police are retiring and quitting at record rates. Maybe a mass walk off across the country is needed. Turn every city into Chicago and Seattle. Of course the Democrats don't give a shit about law and order. The law only apply to those that don't agree with them. Besides, the politicians are all safe within the low crime gated communities. it is the rest of us that will have to fend for ourselves.

Camden NJ dissolved its police department in 2012. At that time they had a murder rate similar to very dangerous countries. But this wasn't done haphazardly. The county police were brought in and the former police had to reapply for their jobs. The majority were rehired. This allowed them to get rid of those protected by the union who were not fit to serve. Murder rate dropped by about 2/3s. Trust is way up in the community, and excessive force complaints halved. An easier fix would seem to be not protecting the bad cops, from the small number of incidents relative to the number of cops, are we even talking about 1%?

You might not want to brag about Camden, NJ too much.

Camden has been dubbed the "most dangerous city" in New Jersey. That's according to the folks at the financial news and opinion site 24/7 Wall St., who dug into FBI data from 2017 to determine violent crime rates in nearly 2,000 cities and towns. Here's what they found for Camden:
  • 2017 violent crimes per 100,000 people: 1,968 (state: 229)
  • Number of violent crimes in 2017: 1,462 (7.1% of state total)
  • Poverty rate: 37.4% (state: 10.7%)
  • Annual unemployment: 8.9% (state: 4.1%)
"There were 229 violent crimes for every 100,000 people in New Jersey in 2017, well below the national violent crime rate of 383 per 100,000," 24/7 Wall St. said. "In Camden, violence is much more common. There were 1,968 violent crimes for every 100,000 people in Camden in 2017, by far the highest violent crime rate of any city in the state. Crime is often concentrated in areas with limited economic opportunity. Camden's 8.9% annual unemployment rate is the highest of any city in New Jersey and more than double the 4.1% state unemployment rate."

tps://www.usatoday.com/story/life/2019/10/25/top-10-most-dangerous-cities-live-nj-ranked-2020/4061332002/

No. 3: Camden

Camden reportedly ranks first in violent crimes with 1,637 crimes per 100,000 residents.

As many subsequent FBI reports and criminologists have noted, violent crime has been going down nationally since the 1990s for a variety — or combination — of reasons. And except for a few outlier years, most recently in 2012, Camden has reverted to a range of 20 to 30 homicides per year, even with the fully staffed CCPD. Camden has ranked as  the 10th-most-dangerous city in America  and is still the  most dangerous city in New Jersey . While that does constitute statistical progress compared with 2011 and 2012, when Camden was ranked the most dangerous city in America, context matters.

In 2010, Camden had roughly 77,000 residents; today, the number is closer to 70,000 . In addition to fewer people, there are also fewer public housing complexes, less affordable housing, and fewer Section 8 offerings within city limits . There is also a widely held suspicion among Camden residents that violent crimes are going unreported in media and reclassified at department headquarters as nonviolent offenses. This is on top of the spike in abuse-of-power allegations against the CCPD since its inception and the beatings of residents captured on camera and viewable on YouTube .

Camden may seem like a policing success story as reported crime stats decline and the CCPD tries to take on a community-based approach to policing. I am conceding that all that may be true. Cities are free to look at what the CCPD is doing that "works'' and determine what is right for their own municipality.

But determining the transferability of the CCPD's approach should be done thoughtfully, with skepticism, and with all the facts and context. Because when it comes to Camden reporting and its police narrative, truth — as many residents know — is often a victim.

The facts behind the fiction in Camden.

One change that needs to happen is that LEO's can't have continual complaints against them and still remain on the streets.  If there are multiple complaints as in the case of the officer who murdered Mr. Floyd, they need to be removed.  I am not saying fire them but the complaints need to be fully investigated within 48 hrs of the filing.  Put them on desk duty or in positions where they don't interact with the public.  But when there are clear cut cases of abuse of power under the authority of color as in the case of the DUI at Wendy's, then yes, immediate termination.

Agreed, it's pretty simple really.   Cops know who the bad cops are and they need to stop protecting them.   That means shit canning the bad ones and tagging them so other departments know what they were fired for.   If municipalities hire known bad cops, they can be sued if the bad cop does something bad in their employ.   Watch how fast it gets fixed them.

The single biggest hindrance for this is the LEO unions.   They are the single biggest protectors of bad cops.

Yep, with more work at home options happening as a result of the China virus people no longer have to live in the big city.  They can work connected to it while living and raising their kids in a less stressful, more relaxed rural to exurban environment with great schools, parks, a bigger home with a real yard for a fraction of the cost and have the city a reasonable distance away.
