'Jurassic World' Under Fire for "Racist" Dinosaur Name

Trying to give the Pachycephalosaurus a shorter nickname might have been a mistake.

It was a slur 65 million years in the making.

In Jurassic World , there's a scene in which the protagonists learn that a group of dinosaurs, called the Pachycephalosaurus, have escaped. For shorthand, they call the group of dinos"Pakis," which American audiences may not realize is an offensive slur in the U.K. referring to people from Pakistan.

Actual photo of a Confederate flag, identical to that one that some have alleged is flying in front of the main entrance to Universal Studios!

Really?!

Is there anyone not offended by something all the time anymore?

Self-righteous indignation seems to have become quite trendy as of late. In many circles it appears its become really "cool" to be extremely offended at something. (I wonder-- it may be a Millenials "thing"?)

Unfortunately Larry, the answer is no.

Being personally offended in civil society has become the norm...

Which is also justification for being very uncivil with others...

Absolute inanity....Smile.gif

And its keeps getting more and more ridiculous. A true story from The Swedish Weekly:

License plate with 786 forbidden might offend muslim immigrants

Since 1988 it has been possible for motorists to have a personalized license plate. Right from the start some restrictionswere made however, regarding what would be allowed on them. Combinations that might be offensive, like FCKU2, BANDIT or XXX were forbidden.

For ten years, a man in the town of Skurup had the numbers 786 on his plate. But when it was to be renewed, he was not allowed to by theSwedish Transport Agency. The combination could be offensive. Why?

As it turns out, the combination 786 is the total value of the letters of Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim . This combination is used by some muslims to avoid writing the name of Allah. But the question still stands. In what way can this be offensive?

The Swedish Weekly have been in contact with the Swedish Transport Agency, who handles all applications regarding personalized plates. Theiranswer was that they have a database of offensive combinations and 786 is one of them. Again, why? They did not know.

"Hold on. You can't call them Pakis, Stan. I refuse to move until you take take that back. The word is Pachycephalo...."

Acts of Civil Disobedience are totally ineffective against most species of dinosaurs.

Some production assistant is out of work today for not checking that. I mean I knew it was a slur and I haven't even been to GB. Whoever got fired, deserved it.

What you think is a slur ... is that the determining factor ? Who made you mayor of Hollywood ?

It's not a slur because I say it is. I know it's a slur in GB against people from Pakistan. So I'm afraid you'll have to ask someone from there why.

I know it's a slur in GB against people from Pakistan.

That's nice . Why should that be a problem for a US filmmaker making a US film ?

Well, I'm at least glad that they didn't shorten the name "Jurassic Park" to "Jew Park".Grin.gif

Beeeecause he wants to show the movie around the world (it's not a US film) including GB and Pakistan and make a lot of money.....

That's his decision to do that , not yours . Again , who elected you as mayor of Hollywood ?

Ummm, the movie is about people visiting a remote island where giant genetically bred dinosaurs roam free. Paki sounds like an acceptable nickname for that unpronounceable proper name. Dial the offence-o-meter down a few notches. Or should we ban the name Jerry because it is a derogatory term for germans?

You see how film making works these days is, when you are spending $100 million or more of your own dollars, you are expecting to make a very large part of your profit from foreign releases and then later from US and DVD releases world wide. Most of it foreign as a matter of fact. Now, when you have a script and a storyboard (rough sketches of the different scenes) about how the film is generally going to be shot and what the dialogue is going to be and when in the story. Then you pay experts in script dialogue to go through the script and storyboards and tell you what might be found offensive in what foreign country, so you can change the dialogue to not offend people in a country that you hope to make several million dollars from distributing it there. This is a process that happens several times as the film is being shot and the dailies are being reviewed by the director and one or more of the producers and a dialogue expert.

So what we have here is an obvious case of the film dialogue expert missing this particular racial slur. If it had been noticed it would have been cut or changed depending on how far the movie had come along in actual production. There are several producers on this film, including Steven Spielberg, who do not want to lose money on this movie and also don't want their good name sullied. This is obviously something that would have not been chosen to have been done, both because of the already mentioned money and good name in the business and I am sure Spielberg will not be using that particular dialogue expert ever again. It is obvious that this was a mistake that slipped through and was not intended to offend anyone. In fact, it is entirely possible that, through the magic of Hollywood productions, the word may disappear completely, with few if anyone noticing.

OK?

P.S. Hollywood is a subdivision of Los Angeles, not a separate town or city, so it doesn't have a separate Mayor or Police Force or Fire Department, etc. Now, the U.S Post office will deliver mail to it's proper place in Hollywood if the name Hollywood is used instead of the more proper Los Angeles.

It's a person of that nationality. Perhaps I should have just used the word slur. Thank you for pointing that tiny, tiny, tiny itty, bitty, teensy, weensy misstatement. Without people like you, it's a wonder where the world would be.

Please. Let the door hit you in the ass on your way out then. Thank you for your somewhat colorful contribution to the conversation.Smile.gif

Oh and in some parts of the world (outside of the US there is a rest of the world you know) it is used and meant as a slur.

Your concern, or rather lack of it, is duly noted.

I would think that Pakistani's would relish the opportunity to learn about Paki's as they relate to Pachycephalosaurus's.

You would think they would take the opportunity to open their minds.

Unlike others we know and love. Smile.gif

Since your keeping score Mickey, how did I do?
