SCIENCE Is a Bunch of Racist Misogyny, Claim Female Mad Scientists

First they came for basic biology, and I did not speak out…

STAFF WRITER OCTOBER 8, 2017

Now, professors at Seattle Pacific University are calling for science–that singularly human intellectual pursuit of the study of the physical and natural world through observation and experimentation–to be redefined as just a bunch of racism and sexism.

In a paper published in the October issue of Race and Physics Teaching, an academic journal that appears to exist, Professors Rachel Scherr and Amy Robertson claim that physics lessons are unfair to women because “white male privilege pervades the discipline of physics as well as the classrooms in which physics is taught and learned,”  Campus Reform  reports.

“Male socialized traits,” they wrote, like “independence, competition, and individual victories” gives male students an edge over their female peers in physics, adding that “objectivity and rationality themselves, the foundations of scientific ideology, are also male-socialized traits.”

Men the world over responded by saying they’ll take the compliment.

But the pair of pissy profs didn’t stop there. This whole time science has just been a tool of oppression used by white people, they claim.

“Historically, the questions that science has addressed have disproportionately advantaged White people, motivated by colonial expansion (to improve land and sea travel, mine ores, manufacture and farm for the benefit of Europeans living in Europe and in colonies),” Scherr and Robertson argue.

Glaringly, the paper omits any mention of the fact that people of Asian and Indian backgrounds vastly excel in STEM fields. That’s egg on your face, 19th century British colonialists. Your plan backfired.

The professors then say that because the sciences were built upon “male privilege,” it’s unsurprising that they continue to perpetuate an advantage for men. They claim that physics, in particular, is “laden with masculine [and, we would add, White] connotations on a symbolical level.”

Not satisfied merely claiming the way science is taught is oppressive, the duo descended further into the darkest recesses of the human spirit when they appeared to realize natural laws, like gravity, for example, are actually just agents of the patriarchy.

“For example, conceptualizing Nature as governed by laws can suggest that it is ruled by a lawmaker, who is often implicitly conceptualized as a male authority,” they claim.

To do away with the gender gap and remedy the situation, the professors are calling upon their white male peers to “disrupt privilege” by “recognizing their own privilege, coping with the discomfort of unfair advantage, and coming to see themselves as agents of change who can contribute to the disruption of systems of unfair advantage.”

They further call upon physics professors to redefine science in the name of social justice, stating that “if our aim is, in part, to disrupt White and/or male privilege within physics, we need to open up the space of what counts as physics.”

Forethought, reason, and the entire female cast of Hidden Figures could not be reached for comment.

Note to "Professors":  You are supposed to be adults and educators but your behavior is that of a toddler.  If you don't like that there aren't many women in the profession, then do something about it.  Act like an adult and quit whining.

“For example, conceptualizing Nature as governed by laws can suggest that it is ruled by a lawmaker, who is often implicitly conceptualized as a male authority,” they claim.

Good grief.   What nonsense.   Science per Oxford:

The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

Science is the objective pursuit of formal, falsifiable, predictive explanations for observable phenomena.   That is, science seeks to explain reality based on evidence.

While there are indeed political forces that exploit science to advance their positions, science itself simply accumulates an increasingly more accurate understanding of nature.

In other words, they are not claiming that Nature is not governed by laws, but rather they are arguing that the concept has been used , by some, to suggest a universal lawmaker implicitly seen (in our culture) as a male authority.  I don't consider that, all in all, to be a wild conclusion on their part.

Or, as Yogi Berra might have said:

But in all seriousness-- he is both. And IMO he's also a bit of a nut case.

Why doesn't he mention it every time I go to the trouble to vote myself up??

But the important thing is not only did I voted it up-- but I mentioned that I voted it up.

Just to be scientific-- lets all mention it each time we vote a comment up (let's limit it to this conversation only-- let's not continue this sheer stupoidityb on the rest of the site).

Then let's keep tab of who voted up what and how often.

Which people here voted up which comments?

Let's reveal all-- and then keep a scientific tally.

After the appropriate mathematical analysis, perhaps we may discover that there is a pattern here.

Then we might be able to publish it as a scientific paper (with a long fancy title and include a few fancy words-- maybe throw in a Latin phrase or two).

To impress people-- or at those who are easily impressed. (P.S: as soon as I post this comment I am going to vote it up!!! Hehehe :-)

I thought I should come here and say something, as a female scientist.  My field, geology, is very dominated by men, and that's just the way it is.

However, I see that there are plenty of people who are here only to poke fun of women, call them names, and throw slurs at women.  I've practiced in my field for 40 years, and never seen this kind of talk directed toward women-- maybe the men I worked with were polite or something.

I have been well-respected in my field, by both men and women, and have worked very hard.  No one in real life has ever expressed these sentiments to me, directly.  Maybe I just got lucky, or maybe the men I worked with respected me.

It never mattered that I was female, as long as I got the job done.  Yeah, there were plenty of opportunities I missed, because I was a female, etc., but no one EVER expressed themselves in the crude ways some of you have expressed yourselves on this article, and I worked with well drillers, some of the crudest men on the planet.  To a man, they became like my family-- we ate together, sweated together, bandaged each other up when we were hurt, shivered together, protected each other, and were friends.

I can not imagine the type of person that would denigrate all women who happen to be scientists.  That's utterly unbelievable!

This is a new high for you, Jonathan...which is to say in normal human terms rock bottom. First, using Milo as a source is about like using Carrot Top as the single expert on comedy.  He's a very mentally disturbed and sexually confused (floridly gay misogynist for starters) rage baby.  But, that doesn't mean I don't always enjoy seeing this from you lot (and you all do it eventually--what is that from, the Breitbart school of sleazy, smarmy, sloppy, gutter-snipe smear journalism?) because it always gives me the chance to rip the shit (and these articles are always choc-a-bloc full of that stuff) out of them.

First, there is no "academic journal" called "Race and Physics Teaching."  There is, however, a journal put out by the American Association of Physics Teachers called The Physics Teacher  which issued a "call for papers" on the subject of race and physics teaching back in Feb. 2016 and the first publication of selected papers began last month.  Tellingly, Milo doesn't go to the actual paper ( that fit with his objective of attacking ideas he doesn't like on the basis of....he just doesn't like them, goddamn it!  That's the only criterion he or any rightwing attack hamster needs or uses.  If we had access to the actual paper we'd see all of his carefully excised bits of it don't really quite tell the truth.  Oh, wait. We do have that access.  Let's start with Milo's source's first lie (emphasis):

Professors Rachel Scherr and Amy Robertson claim that physics lessons are unfair to women because “white male privilege pervades the discipline of physics as well as the classrooms in which physics is taught and learned,”

Now here's the full paragraph from the article where the above quote was distorted:

The underrepresentation of women and people of color in physics has been attributed to a wide variety of factors ranging from society-wide conditions such as income inequality and sparse role models, to daily interpersonal interactions that disadvantage or discourage women and people of color from pursuing physics. 1–4  These factors may be seen as manifestations of White and/or male privilege: social, economic, educational, or political advantages that are made available to Whites and males on the basis of their social identity. White male privilege pervades the discipline of physics as well as the classrooms in which physics is taught and learned. 3–9

See what's not in the original? No? Let me spell it out:  There's no fucking suggestion or reference of the idea of "fairness" not to mention  the actual word, "fair."  So, this is how the rightwing distorts things:  an anodyne paragraph which contains nothing but the incontrovertible fact that physics teachers in this country at least are overwhelmingly white men and offers possible explanations for why that is.  Let's go on. Here's Milo's next selection from his rightwing source:

“Historically, the questions that science has addressed have disproportionately advantaged White people, motivated by colonial expansion (to improve land and sea travel, mine ores, manufacture and farm for the benefit of Europeans living in Europe and in colonies),” Scherr and Robertson argue .

In fact, that is not just Scherr's and Robertson's arguments as they cite 3 references for that historical FACT.  Until our own revolution, that was largely the goal of mainly English colonists in this country ferchrissakes.  If you people do not even recognize the absolute truth in that statement there's no hope of ever getting any fact into your heads.
