Michelle Obama calls herself 'forever first lady' in speech to students

Source

"We need you all to be successful," Obama said during her keynote address at a College Signing Day event at Temple University,   according to Philly Voice .

"We have such high hopes for you. See, I am not one of those doubters. I know that you have everything it takes to succeed," Obama reportedly said. "I know you are me, and if I can be standing here as your forever first lady, then you can do anything you put your mind to."

I vote sister First Lady of TheNewsTalkers.

We already have one of those.  She's the pretty red-head that runs the joint.  I wouldn't be adverse to the title of First Princess, though.

The crowd burst into applause at the line, Thousands of students attended the event at Temple to declare their post-high school plans. Celebrities like Bradley Cooper and Questlove were also at the event.

This is the fifth consecutive year that Obama has marked College Signing Day. She headlined the event last year just months after leaving the White House.

Is she still "Finally" proud of America ?

There are many times in US history that good Patriotic Americans would not be proud of America, like when half of her States tried to secede and write their own constitution that was founded on the inequality of the races and the enslavement of humans, Jim Crow laws and segregation, the refusal to allow women and blacks a voice and a vote, the bans on interracial marriage, the bans on gay marriage, the unnecessary wars and violence from Mai Lei to Iraq, the trading of weapons to the Iranians for hostages and taking 240 years to elect a black President. Overcoming those times of ignorance and bad decisions has allowed Americans to find real pride in our nation, not just the stupid concept of "my country right or wrong". Michelle expressed how proud she was that we had come such a long way from even when she was a child watching the blatant discrimination and prejudice against her and her family merely because of her skin color. I doubt she had any idea those disgusting bigots would come crawling out of the woodwork during her husbands time in office and attacking her with vile caricatures, racist memes and sexist tirades.

Sadly, with the election of a narcissistic incompetent orange clown, real patriots find themselves faced with more shame and embarrassment as we recognize that about a third of our nation are xenophobes, homophobes, Islamaphobes and sexist bigots who feel more comfortable siding with a foreign enemy like Russia than to accept their fellow law abiding, tax paying American citizens just because they happen to be gay, liberal, of a different religion or a minority.

Yes there where times in our history not to be proud of, but there are many times to be proud of.  Wouldn't you agree?

Michelle said it was her "first time"  though.  I find that statement coming from someone who became the First Lady of the United State of America very disturbing and telling of her hatred for her country.

How exactly does not being proud equate to hate? You're pushing a false narrative with invented rhetoric that simply wasn't there.

Proud: adjective - feeling deep pleasure or satisfaction as a result of one's own achievements, qualities, or possessions or those of someone with whom one is closely associated.

Not being proud is not hate, it's indifference.
Indifferent: adjective - having no particular interest or sympathy; unconcerned ; neither good nor bad; mediocre.
The false rhetoric about Michelle "hating" America is pure conjecture and doesn't really make any sense unless it's coming from someone who already hates her for some other reason, the most likely of which is her skin color.

Seems half those people thought they were proud Americans

The half that tried to secede thought of themselves as proud confederates who supported what the Vice President of the Confederacy said of their new government:

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition." - Alexander Stephens

So they were worthless racist traitors who never lived up to what it took to be a Patriotic American. Confederates attacked our Nation and killed hundreds of thousands of real Patriotic Americans all to protect their imagined right to own and treat other humans worse than cattle. That, by my definition, makes confederates the ones who were less than human and totally unworthy of any empathy or compassion. They represented the exact opposite of what it meant to be a Patriotic American.

I agree, but that's what many conservatives wanted to focus on throughout her husbands two terms. Racist cartoons, memes, jokes, from picturing her as a black panther militia member or a gorilla and calling her a "man" to calling her "an ape in heels", some conservatives just couldn't get past their deep seated racism and hate of Michelle simply because she was a strong black woman. And yes, that was a very sad part of American history and nothing to be proud of.

Speaking of which, it truly exposes conservatives hypocrisy when they vilify Michelle Wolf with faux indignation for saying Sarah Huckabee Sanders has "perfect smoky eyes" claiming that was a derogatory comment about Sarah's looks, but they had no problem laughing and guffawing at the racist cartoons and gross images and jokes about Michelle Obamas looks.

US political cartoons and caricatures, which have been drawn by people of all races about all races, date back to Ben Franklin, so don't even try to pull the race card just because you might be offended about those that were drawn about Michelle Obama. There have been many unflattering cartoons which have featured Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush - and that's only the 20th century.

It's refreshing to see at least a little honesty I suppose. Realizing you have a problem is the first step to getting help, changing and becoming a useful member of society. And yes, Michelle has FAR more class than the third trophy wife Trump cheated on while she was at home with his four month old child. Any woman who would sell herself to a serial adulterer just for the gaudy trappings of a faux billionaire has zero class. But that's the type of women Trump is attracted to, porn stars, playmates and "models" who take all their clothes off for money are the women he knows he's got a chance with, all the other nearly two dozen women he sexually assaulted rejected his gross short fingered groping.

No, and neither is the current 1st lady. They sleep in the President's quarters, and the Lincoln Bedroom is not part of the President's quarter.

Try to educate yourself a bit.

The   Lincoln Bedroom   is a   bedroom   which is   part   of a guest suite   located   in the southeast corner of the second floor of the   White House   in Washington, D.C. The   Lincoln   Sitting   Room   makes up the other   part   of the suite. The   room   is named for President Abraham Lincoln , who used the   room   as an office.

She did not say, 'Forever First Lady' as you did in comment 3.4.8.  Notice the word differences within each set of quotation marks that you posted in your own comment:

Not so. Michelle Obama used that term in order to affirm that in her heart she will always be dedicated to her former position as the First Lady of the US, and to the people of this country. To demean, denigrate and malign her for continuing to follow through with her devotion to her county and its people as she did as the First Lady of the US, it truly very small indeed.

Also, I think that the current First Lady if very much aware of Michelle's meaning and does not take it as an insult, or trying to out shine her. You and others, really should give Melania more credit for being able to understand where Michelle is coming from, which obviously, many here aren't willing to do.

Mags, I agreed with your wording from the beginning and pointed that out to Tessy yesterday. If Tessy or others are still calling Michelle Obama "Forever First Lady" as Michelle called herself, that rests on them, not you and me.

The USA isn't a monarchy or dictatorship with one person in power for decades, so on the day Obama's presidency ended, both his and her titles became "former ______" just like all other presidents and first ladies. If Michelle wants to call herself "Forever Former First Lady", she can have at it. Everyone throughout the world knows that she's now a "Former First Lady".

Someones feeling emasculated by a strong woman who looks like she could kick most whiny little sexists asses.

When I was young, I was the only girl in our neighborhood. I was basically and only child, as my Brother lived most of the time with my Maternal Grandparents. Thus, in order for me to have playmates I had to learn to defend myself with the boys I played with. I had to be able to give back as good a I got, and then some. Some of them I sent home in tears, but, not intentionally.

As I grew older I found that working and doing business in a man's world was not an easy thing to do, as a large part o the men thought that a woman should not be dealing in their industry. However, I never backed down I gave a firm handshake to let them know I was no delicate flower, and did not intimidate easily. I proved that I kept my word and came through as I promised. I made no excuses for myself and accepted none. In the process, I earned a lot of respect from those who had once looked down on me. I worked hard to earn it, and gave it where it was deserved.

So it is not surprising that women like Michelle and the other First Lady's have earned the respect of the people, not only here in the US, but, around the world. No one has the right to look down on them, other than just to hate for the sake of hate.

And if that is all people like that give, then that is all that they will get back ten fold.

And her reference to forever a First Lady is no different than any of the other First Lady's who carried on with their programs they started while in the WH, however, many here just HAVE to find fault with Michelle for the obvious reasons. The current supposed First Lady has shown herself to be nothing more then a Plastic Barbie Doll standing next to Trump. A Pink Swiss Plastic Swatch.  Granted she refuses to hold his hand most of the time, but she has no spine or VOICE of her own. Even if with a phony smile! With what Donald is going through if it were Barack you can be damned sure if it were Michelle we'd be hearing about it. Instead we wonder, if she is even a human being...or just an accessory Donald wears?

Yes, Bill and Hillary went through it (though not with paid off porn stars and playboy bunny's and ...well...ask Cohen...)  and ultimately they found a way to repair their marriage and I respect that, but Hillary was not just a Plastic Doll standing beside him!

Michelle Obama is the last First Lady. Right now the job is still waiting to be filled.

AVERAGE! I am 61 years old and have been so lucky to have lived through to the terms of two of the of the classiest, most dignified and most beautiful First Ladies in American History, the incomparable Jackie Kennedy and the no one even come close second Michelle Obama!

The person who is married to Donald Trump has a chance to come close to joining those two if she would actually become a First Lady, but sadly she is showing no signs of doing so. She is nothing more then a paper doll. If she became a human being then she could become a First Lady. A First Lady has to be a real person and she is not. Donald Trump puts her on and off like he selects a particular watch or pair of shoes to wear and she puts up with it and the same applies to their son. Look at his face. His face is blank and his eyes are hollow. He is a pair of cuff links to his father.

Asked and answered?

And I acknowledged your answer.

Just because you don't like my answer doesn't mean anything.

A First Lady is referred to as a former First lady when her husband is no longer the acting President.

And that ain't going to change just because some yahoo is in love with Michelle Obama.

Nick Cannon certainly qualifies as "anyone else", does he not?

I think any First Lady is forever after treated with the same respect and acknowledged as being a First Lady. Here, I assume she is saying that she stood for certain issues when she and her husband were in the White House, and they still do. If it means something else, I missed it. Not sure why it would be newsworthy.

Meh, she will always have the title, like all the other first ladies.

As soon as Trump either resigns, is impeached or shockingly finishes his first term Melania will forever be the first former nude model and former first lady. So I guess the Republicans win with another "first" they can add to their legacy. They now already own the First reality TV show host President which must make them just so proud...

Without an ounce of fat on it. With that gluteus maximus she could crack walnuts, or wingnuts if they keep trying to disparage her gorgeous physique from their trailer park lawn couches.

It's called muscle, or do people not have any where you live? Ever seen Venus or Serena Williams, that isn't junk in the trunk, it's all power. Michelle's a runner and lifts weights. It's sad that some can't see the beauty in strength or other body types, but obviously you're blinded by something. You told me in another thread "don't let anyone every convince you that minorities are peachy clean.  They have their ways." so it's obvious you hold some deep seated prejudices and you really don't care. That's fine, that's your prerogative, but don't expect anyone with more than half a brain to agree with such filthy hate just because you "Faced personal racism four times" in your life. No one, not even you nor I, knows why Michelle Obama's rear end is the way it is. Although your comment indicates that you adore Michelle Obama's body, you're getting very off topic by demeaning people you disagree with. Stop it.

Actually, I think it is hilariously funny.  He told me about the Williams' sisters whose success is In their asses!  Well, in their case, thank God for well structured asses.

Michelle's official clothing always tried to cover her "well sculptured ass".  Oh, but I am such a racist!  Even her paid for dressers tried to hide it.

What do you suggest I should have done about Dismayed Patriot's opinions of people? I am not a NT moderator. In comment  15.2.6  , I told him to stop, and as a seeder, that's the best moderation I can do. If you don't like what he said, report him.

you're getting very off topic by demeaning people you disagree with.

It seemed that was the exact direction the Michelle Obama haters had taken, demeaning her and her body because they hate her and her husband. I apologize if I got too personal. I am a passionate defender of our former President and his wife because they deserve a level of respect that those on the right have never shown them and the only reason I can see for such vitriol is the most obvious one of which Mag was essentially admitting too. I often see righteous indignation from the right when Donald or Melania are attacked even though they have earned no reason for respect and are nothing but a slimy reality TV show host past his prime and an ex-nude model trophy wife. Barack and Michelle are a model American family, Michelle being a graduate of Princeton and Harvard law school and an associate Dean of student services at the University of Chicago and the Vice President for Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center and can trace her family back to her great great grandfather who was a slave on a pre-civil war South Carolina plantation. She has became a role model for women, an advocate for poverty awareness, education, nutrition, physical activity and healthy eating and has been married to her first and only husband Barack for nearly 30 years. I find her detractors are nothing but petty jealous bigots who attempt to caricature her as a militant black panther or an uneducated ape because they themselves feel threatened by her class, education and sophistication that they could never match, and nothing pisses off bigots like what they see as an "uppity" minority. This entire seed was started as an obvious attempt to demean and vilify her as somehow unworthy or less than other first ladies, which I admit, rubbed my rhubarb the wrong way.

I understand why you feel that way, because Trump haters do the same thing to him and his family. Neither "side" is right.  Perhaps you should mull on that.

We've digressed from the point of my seed's article:

  • Do you feel that Michelle Obama is justified in calling herself our "forever first lady" or should she call herself our "former first lady" as all other first ladies are addressed?
  • Other than her race, is there anything that's more special about Michelle Obama than all of her predecessors that should qualify her to be called "forever first lady"?
