Ladies who ROCK!
Perrie started a fun conversation about a group that is one of the greatest! ... or maybe not... and the debate rages! In good fun. We (I, at least) tend to be a bit misogynist about musicians... and at the same time, we like to listen to the ladies. Schizoid, much?
So... let's talk about ladies who rock.
Rolling Stone always has a "Top" list handy: Women Who Rock: The 50 Greatest Albums of All Time , with the top ten being
10 Bikini Kill, ‘The Singles’
9 The Supremes, ‘Anthology’
8 Blondie, ‘Parallel Lines’
7 Missy Elliott, ‘Under Construction’
6 Adele, ’21’
5 Patti Smith, ‘Horses’
4 Fleetwood Mac, ‘Rumours’
3 Dusty Springfield, ‘Dusty in Memphis’
2 Joni Mitchell, ‘Blue’
1 Aretha Franklin, ‘I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You’
That's a terrible list! How dare they not include Melissa Etheridge?
Of course, the RS list is albums, and to be honest I cannot name a single one for Etheridge, even if I can sing along with a whole bunch of her songs. So let's move along from albums to artists.
One of my Spotify playlists is called Ladies ; It includes:
- Alabama
- Alicia Keys
- Anguun
- Ani DeFranco
- Aretha Franklin
- Avril Lavigne
- Carly Simon
- Carole King
- Carrie Underwood
- Chely Wright
- The Cors
- The Cranberries
- Dar Williams
- Dido
- Dixie Chicks
- Dusty Springfield
- Eagle-Eyed Cherry
- Fiona Apple
- Indigo Girls
- Joan Jett
- Joni Mitchell
- k.d. lang
- Kacey Musgraves
- Katy Perry

- Sarah MacLachlan
- Shania Twain
- Shawn Colvin
- Sheryl Crow
- The Supremes
- Suzanne Vege
- Taylor Swift
- Texas
- Tina Turner
- Tracey Chapman
- Trisha Yearwood
They all have more than one track. There are quite a few others who have only a single track.
Who is missing?
Picked Bonnie Raitt off of the floor at Tulagi's in Boulder when her chair and that gallon of wine did her wrong.
Good...Tracy Chapman is on there
and Norah Jones...
Saw Tracy at Red Rocks outside of Denver. Was surrounded by lesbians but got laid anyway. A fantastic evening.
I love "Fast Car"
I'm a music lover, but I have to get into the lyrics and understand them. That's the thing I like about this song. Back when this song first came out I was stationed in Alaska with a young woman who shall we say was not very bright. Anyway, this song comes on the radio and she starts bitching about how stupid this song is. My superintendent is standing there just looking at her when I tell her she obviously never actually listened to the lyrics. As I explained that the young woman in the song left one bad life for another and at the end of the song makes a decision and kicks the lazy SOB our of her life, MSgt S looks at me with admiration and says...."exactly!" Airman W still never got it
When I think about chicks that rock Grace Slick always comes to mind.
Yeah man that chick could rock.
Saw Starship at Pine Knob in the early 80's.
Great concert
That particular song is an all-time great... but I don't think the Airplane ever got to that altitude a second time.
Grace and I made love once back in the 60s. Sat in the front row in the 90's and she blew me a kiss and sang to me.
Hopefully you didn't get one of the gifts that keep on giving .....
Don't know her name, but the singer from Halestorm
Lizzy Hale possibly ?
She's got ice screamin capabilities
eg: cover of White snakes ? Heat of the night
she gives wanna B Plant, Coverdale, a yell for his $
One of my favorites.
Nice. I just added her "Best of" to the playlist.
Thanks.
OMG, where is Stevie Nicks?
Ummmm..........
I'll take care of it, Boss!
Right away, Boss.............
Done!
Can't leave Stevie off the list, she should be at # 1
How is it that Janis Joplin has yet to be mentioned as the best female vocalist ever.
She's in here somewhere. Keep looking
Are you all too young to remember?
Nope, see above .......
Janis - the first name that came to my mind when I read the article.
YES!!!!
Saw Janis Joplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company at Blossom Music Center in August 1969--five days after returning from my first tour in Vietnam.
Another great female singer.
I'm going to leave the computer for until tomorrow morning. I'll give her a listen then. This is a nice track, but then... it's kinda impossible to screw up that song!
Joan Armatrading
Always a fan (and as a kid, in love with) Stevie Nicks......
Lzzy Hale from Halestorm......
BTW, I saw Stevie Nicks on American Horror Story a few seasons back.....still am a little in love with her.......

Buzz,
Emelda May
Train Kept a Rillin
and
Road Runner
Buzz???
Yes, I originally posted the videos without mentioning what they were. I forgot you can't reach youtube links.
So I listed the vids for you.
Probably my favorite Imelda tune.
Cheryl Crowe?
Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart?
Linda Perry .. 4 non blondes?
Crowe is there. I'll give the others a listen tomorrow.
I missed Crowe on the list .. my bad..
Gotta go with Ann and Nancy myself !
Saw them in concert a few times.
Fantastic song!!!!!
Ann's singing voice always fascinated me. Just "Powerful" .
I luv powerful singing voices.
I know it's not a "Women's Voice"....but....." POWERFUL " !
It is about a women though .
Another I like is Kelly Clarkson:
Exactly! OMG! Journey was one of the first CDs I ever bought along with "Boston" and "Kansas"! I'm still pretty young, but my daddy made sure I knew good music! I learned how to drive blasting Pink Floyd LOL
Another great song!
kinda makes me cry at times knowing the little ones can get hurt by Adult selfishness.
Pink Floyd is GREAT ! In my younger days I thought that was the name of the singer.
But, it's gotta be "The Wall" album - WWWWWOOOOOWWWWWW. Windows all the way down, volume all the way up - "We don't need no education".
Cool ! He did kinda shy away from the media stuff for a long while.
I thought the same thing about Lynard Skinnard (sp?) LOL
I love that song - Send Her My Love. It gives me chills when I listen. Steve Perry has a hell of a voice. Journey is not the same without him.
The Old stuff is still great.
I love Cheryl Crowe
Jana Mashonee singing the old Sam Cook song, ''Change is Gonna Come''
She is excellent Kavika.
Where is hell is the greatest of them all...Janis Joplin.
She's on the playlist, Boss...
I just missed her when I recopied. Honest, Boss!
Well OK, that was a close call.
That little Texas girl could sing!
One of my favorite songs!
Karen Carpenter. Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.
I always thought Karen Carpenter had one of the purest voices I have ever heard. I could recognize it in an instant.
Adel, for me, is similar.
But Karen's voice was quiet and soothing. Probably not really classified as rock.
I enjoy Adel.
Don't go getting technical with me Texan! LOL Soft Rock?
That would work!
I always liked artists who I could hear and understand clearly--I like especially the singer-songwriters--like Carole King, Mac Davis, Jackson Browne, Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Chapin, etc.
I liked some hard rock, but not too much. Some of it I can't hardly understand a word they are screaming!
Yeah, I am old. unfortunately.
I like to understand the lyrics too.
Me too, but I prefer saying well seasoned.
Local "Girl", well, at least for part of her life:
Forgot for Buzz
Joan Jet - Wooly Bully
Buzz,
Blonde
Sunday Girl
Once I had a love aka The disco song (1975 version) - NOT Heart of Glass
Hanging On The Telephone
Hey, what's with this "Buzz"?
I answered below. Correct me if I am wrong. It is my understanding you can't get to youtube links and like when the sone and artist is mentioned. Is this correct?
I forgot when I posted the vids and followed up with the adjustment.
Oh, okay, thanks for thinking of me. Appreciated.
I enjoyed the early stuff by No Doubt with Gwen Stefani, the musical styling was new and unique (to me) at the time. Haven't listened to anything from her since that awful b a n a n a song came out
OMG .... she wasn't around long but Alannah Myles ..... she was more bluesy but she is smoking hot!
Alannah Myles tribute to Elvis
Sorry, don't know how to put up those fancy video links yet.
If you like Myles you might like these folks.
Dorothy - Raise Hell
Dorothy - No Church in the Wild live Austin Tx jaminthevan
My sister has an EP out:
So I am picky about woman singers. I like women who have strong voices and are not sappy. I can say this, as I too was a woman singer.
These are ones I like:
You have an excellent list, even though somehow Whitney Houston isn't on there.
I'll give you one off the wall. Helen Shapiro was 14 years old when she recorded this.
Incredible singing voice. She never made it big in the 60's , I would say mainly because her original material was questionable.
BEYOND THE SEA - Helen Shapiro

I can't help but think of the Bobby Darin version..
I dont think he was a woman.
Yes. I noticed that she was missing. So is Dionne Warwick. I'll add them tomorrow.
Pat Benatar ?
Lol how could I forget about her, I was in love (lust) with her throughout highschool. Tiny girl with a huge voice
There have been so many woman that made a foot print in music .. it is hard to remember them all .. I have had to stay away .. as I keep coming up with names that I would add to the list : )
Joss Stone, she is one of my personal favorites...
Laura Niro - Don't agree
Grace Slick - Don't agree
Stevie Nicks - Definitely
Christine McVie - dunno, I'll give her a try
Ann Wilson - dunno, I'll give her a try
Annie Lennox - already added
Patti Labelle - good but not great
Linda Ronstadt - I listened to a lot of Stone Poneys... nope
Debbie Harry - dunno, I'll give her a try
Bonnie Raitt - I like some of her stuff... and dislike a lot
Dionne Warwick - Definitely
Petula Clark - Definitely
Who do you reject because they're "sappy"? They're probably my favorites: Indigo Girls and the like... I sometimes like "sappy".
Go beyond the "top 40" stuff.
How about Lita Ford?
They were all good. It was a shame about the Joan and Cherry mix up.
I will tell you this, that wasn't far from typical from the Broome Jr High/ Rockville, Md, environment mentality at the time.
Lita was better with the Runaways than she was on her own.
I think more of a creativity thing than mechanics.
Despite the sales of her 1986 album, she mailed it in creatively.
I listened to René. She's in rough company, here... and manages to be acceptable. That's pretty high praise.
I like rock with some country licks.
My Dad played CW in the same night club even on same dates as Patsy Cline.
I worked with Tammy Wynette's daughter 30 years ago. Didn't know it until I told a Tammy Wynette joke. oops
That is funny.
All you can do is ask forgiveness.
What was her reaction?
Edit:
I can't think of how old Tammy Wynette was back then.
Jimmy Dean often benched Roy Clark because he was often enjoying the beer too much.
I worked with Patsy Cline's sister, she didn't talk about Patsy and most people there didn't know it
They are restoring Patsy's house in Winchester, VA
She eventually got over it since I didn't know, but I didn't get invited to her wedding.
Ooops. Worse things happen in life.
As I read through the comments, I was looking to see if anyone would mention Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick because I would have if nobody else did. "Want Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" were absolutely great songs back in those days.

Two of the best
I love Bonnie Rait and her slide technique. She has covered a few of John Hiatt's songs.
My favorite Fraulein.
NENA | Nur geträumt [Official Video] [Live 2010]
More may remember this
Nena - 99 Luftballons
Chrissie Hynde
Linda Ronstadt
Pink,
Sass Jordan,
Bed-time. Be nice!
Any WW2 Brits here? Vera Lynn.
Voice of an Angel - Sarah McLachlan
A voice from heaven - Joan Baez
I love Melissa Etheridge but she went downhill after her first two albums. Her self-titled album was brilliant and Never Enough was great, but she lost her spark on Yes I am . I saw her in August of 1992 and it was an amazing show in the Cleveland Flats.
This song rips, I remember where I was when i heard it first I was sitting in my car in one the college parking lots because we went to a dive a few miles away for lunch and we just found a parking spot. I almost turned the engine off but the DJ said that this was a killer track from a new artist. She put it on and I listened to every note. I was late for class but it was worth it. I went to Camelot records (a few of us will remember that place) and bought the cassette after class.
Ah, Camelot Music, i remember it well. Misspent a lot of youthful wealth in that place.
I like how you can date someone by what they know about music audio formats. First, for all but the really ancient, came vinyl records but you can date people on those by record speed. First 45 and 78 and finally 33-1/3.
Then you got your eight track taps. The one you had to jam a pencil in to hold the tape in place so it didn't play two tracks at a time on the cheaper players. They were big in the 70's so you're likely not that old since you talked about cassette tapes. I bought many "quadraphonic" 8 track tapes in the day.
Then came cassette tapes. They were big in mid to late eighties so i would estimate you were in college around 1985 or later. Just a guess.
Then came CD's in the early to mid 90's. Most youngsters today have no clue of anything before CD's. Heck many of them have never bought a CD. No reason to today.
Me i still run a nice Denon turntable from time to time. An audiophile turntable with a cartridge that cost more than the turntable itself. The sound is actually nicer in some ways than digital. More "realistic" if you will.
Snap, crackle and pop .....
I had over 100 45s and still have about 50 LPs.
I remember 8-tracks well but I never owned one.
I was a college freshman in 1985.
I didn't buy my first CD player until after college, about 1990.
I got all my dads vinyl after he passed a couple years ago. I have two huge bins of them. He had just great taste in music, and I love breaking out his old turntable; the one he had when I was a little kid, and listening to them. My girls aren't thrilled since it is all old stuff from the 70s and 80s, but I love it and it was music that I grew up with and they hold great memories from when I was a kid.
The music from that time is almost timeless, give it a little time and I'll bet your girls start liking some of it.
Some of the music written and performed during that time was some of the most intregret, well thought out compositions those musical instruments will ever be able to produce.
Guitar riffs, drum beats, organ accompaniments. and even vocal ranges that were off the chart.
Most of what came after it is IMO: A watered down version of what these instruments are capable of. Water down because of lack of skill and ease of use.
As you can guess I am a big fan of 70 and 80s ROCK !
lol
Me too!!! I have my oldest starting to get interested in 90s alternative. She likes the Cranberries a lot and she likes some Fleetwood Mac. I'm still working on her. I am a huge music lover and the crap "artists" are putting out today, is just, well, crap. We have an alternative station here in Atlanta and classic rock one as well that I stick with. I do have to admit though, Taylor Swift puts on one hell of a show and she plays her own guitar. Not too many artist do that anymore
And, for heaven's sake, don't forget these three -
Man, this thread just reminds me of how much i love and appreciate music.
Sorry to being all over the place....But !
