Fact check: Trump brags to troops about 10 percent pay raise he didn't actually give them

DECEMBER 27, 2018

181227-donald-trump-iraq-visit-al-0949_5

President Donald Trump told American troops in Iraq that he had given them a 10 percent raise, and that it was their first pay hike in a decade — but he didn't, and it wasn't.

"You just got one of the biggest pay raises you've ever received," Trump said in remarks at al-Asad Airbase during his surprise trip to Iraq on Wednesday, drawing cheers from the troops. "You haven’t gotten one in more than 10 years — more than 10 years. And we got you a big one. I got you a big one."

Troops will receive a 2.6 percent — not 10 percent — pay hike for 2019; they got a 2.4 percent pay hike in 2018.

What's more, American troops have received a pay hike every year for decades . 2019's raise is the largest in nine years.

Military pay raises are tied to increases in private-sector wages , as calculated by the Department of Labor. Congress can also enact raises that exceed that rate, as well.

Trump insisted that he personally had fought for this raise, because the troops put their lives on the line.

"They said: 'You know, we could make it smaller. We could make it 3 percent. We could make it 2 percent. We could make it 4 percent.' I said: 'No. Make it 10 percent. Make it more than 10 percent,'" Trump told the troops. "It's been more than 10 years. That's a long time. And, you know, you really put yourselves out there, and you put your lives out there. So congratulations."

The remarks came during the president's first trip to troops stationed in a combat zone, days after he announced he'd withdraw the U.S. from foreign wars in Syria and Afghanistan.

"No force in history has done more for the cause of justice and peace," Trump told the service members. "We are always going to protect you. And you just saw that because you just got one of the biggest pay raises you've ever received."

Basic pay for active duty soldiers ranged from $19,659 to $38,059 this year, based on experience level and rank.

Trump went around the world to lie to American soldiers.  Trumpsters must be so proud.

Basic pay is just an equalizer.

Trump has a long way to go to match the pay raises we received under Clinton and Bush 43.

When you are on AD and have the ability to choose where to serve, it's all about COLA, BAS, Basic Allowance for Quarters (housing) that makes the difference

between living large or applying for food stamps.

Clinton registered for the draft. Cadet Bone-spurs said, "Daddy, my foot hurts."

Clinton used political favors and his uncle's political connections to obtain deferments and then falsely promised to join ROTC when they ultimately ran out (and then backed out of his promise when it was clear he wouldn't be drafted).

Keep pretending there's a difference.

Support for Trump is fading among active-duty troops, new poll shows

By: Leo Shane III   October 15 2018

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s approval rating among active-duty military personnel has slipped over the last two years, leaving today’s troops evenly split over whether they’re happy with the commander in chief’s job performance, according to the results of a new Military Times poll of active-duty service members.

About 44 percent of troops had a favorable view of Trump’s presidency, the poll showed, compared to 43 percent who disapproved.

The results from the survey, conducted over the course of September and October, suggest a gradual decline in troops’ support of Trump since he was elected in fall 2016, when a similar Military Times poll showed that 46 percent of troops approved of Trump compared to 37 percent who disapproved. That nine-point margin of support now appears gone.

During that same period, the number of neutral respondents has dwindled from almost 17 percent to about 13 percent, suggesting political polarization inside the military community has intensified in recent years.

original

Still, the latest survey shows that military service members are more supportive of the president than the American public at large, which, according to the most recent Gallup poll, approves of Trump at a rate of 43 percent compared to the 53 percent who disapprove.

“The general rule of thumb with the military is that it moves along with public opinion but lags conservative,” said Peter Feaver, a former adviser to former President George W. Bush who is now a political science professor at Duke University and an author of several books on military culture.

“In this case, we’re seeing military members shifting along with the public, but still staying a little more pro-Trump than the rest of the country.”

Historical base rate records.

BAS  Basic allowance for Subsistance

Defense Budget proposed 2.9% (2018 & 2019) in Defense Budget, 2018 received .3% 2019 was actually 0%

BAH Basic Allowance for Quarters/Housing

Defense Budget proposes 2.9% (every year )  2018 the actual increase was .7%  The 2019 increase is actually 2.55% However BAH used to cover 99% of actual housing expenses and that has been reduced to 95%

So, no, it doesn't appear to add up to anywhere near 10%

You asked for a history of military pay raises.  Check

You implied that there might be more to Trump's 10%  than just Base pay.  Yes there is.  Every Defense Budget addresses BAS & BAH separately.

The three components of a service members pay are Bas, BAS, BAH and for some enlisted members, combat pay which is a fixed rate of $225.00 per month.

None of it adds up to 10%

4  FSA  for those few who qualify  a  flat fee of $250  per month

5  Combat pay -  already addressed -  a flat fee of $225.00 for enlisted members only

6  TAX Advantage  not part of anyone's pay, no changes to IRS rules for BAH exemptions, combat pay tax exemptions.  Why bring it up?

7  FSSA per the Defense Budget of 2016 is being phased out in favor of SNAP (same formula) DOD's data shows that fewer than 300 people qualify for FSSA worldwide.

8  Uniform allowances vary from service to service for both officers and enlisted, there is no data for across the board increases or decreases although many individual articles are no longer eligible for replacement as uniforms evolve per service.

9  Child Support Allowance is a BAH issue and  already covered.  Members with dependents can continue to receive full BAH while temporarily in barracks due to training or temporary assignments

10  ?

By statute all pre-1986 "allowances" are not taxable.

You asked for a history of military pay raises.

Many of the comments on this seed are not about the topic, even though being "off topic" has been mentioned numerous times.

The article is not being thankful for the military, or insulting the military. It is about Donald Trump lying to the troops he visited in Iraq when he told them he had gotten them a 10% pay raise (which in reality is 2.6%). A pay raise that he also lied about when he said it was the first one they will have received in 10 years.

I know it is hard for some of you to admit your hero Trump is a bald faced liar, but that is the topic of this discussion.
