Trump brags to troops about 10 percent pay raise he didn't actually give them

Fact check: Trump brags to troops about 10 percent pay raise he didn't actually give them
DECEMBER 27, 2018
President Donald Trump told American troops in Iraq that he had given them a 10 percent raise, and that it was their first pay hike in a decade — but he didn't, and it wasn't.
"You just got one of the biggest pay raises you've ever received," Trump said in remarks at al-Asad Airbase during his surprise trip to Iraq on Wednesday, drawing cheers from the troops. "You haven’t gotten one in more than 10 years — more than 10 years. And we got you a big one. I got you a big one."
Troops will receive a 2.6 percent — not 10 percent — pay hike for 2019; they got a 2.4 percent pay hike in 2018.
What's more, American troops have received a pay hike every year for decades . 2019's raise is the largest in nine years.
Military pay raises are tied to increases in private-sector wages , as calculated by the Department of Labor. Congress can also enact raises that exceed that rate, as well.
Trump insisted that he personally had fought for this raise, because the troops put their lives on the line.
"They said: 'You know, we could make it smaller. We could make it 3 percent. We could make it 2 percent. We could make it 4 percent.' I said: 'No. Make it 10 percent. Make it more than 10 percent,'" Trump told the troops. "It's been more than 10 years. That's a long time. And, you know, you really put yourselves out there, and you put your lives out there. So congratulations."
The remarks came during the president's first trip to troops stationed in a combat zone, days after he announced he'd withdraw the U.S. from foreign wars in Syria and Afghanistan.
"No force in history has done more for the cause of justice and peace," Trump told the service members. "We are always going to protect you. And you just saw that because you just got one of the biggest pay raises you've ever received."
Basic pay for active duty soldiers ranged from $19,659 to $38,059 this year, based on experience level and rank.
"Troops will receive a 2.6 percent — not 10 percent — pay hike for 2019"
Trump went around the world to lie to American soldiers. Trumpsters must be so proud.
He has plenty of deplorables in the military as demonstrated by all the soldiers falling over themselves to get selfies with him. That 2.6 won't make a huge difference as it will be taxed also.
As a 20 year retired/disabled vet, I find your comment disgusting and totally uncalled for, as well as a huge disservice to our men and women putting their lives on the line overseas on a daily basis.
Trump took five deferments....and he happens to be the current potus...not a POTUS that left office 20 years ago.
It is free speech, nothing more, nothing less. Exactly what those service people are protecting, is it not?
Basic pay is just an equalizer.
Trump has a long way to go to match the pay raises we received under Clinton and Bush 43.
When you are on AD and have the ability to choose where to serve, it's all about COLA, BAS, Basic Allowance for Quarters (housing) that makes the difference
between living large or applying for food stamps.
Here is some more free speech:
You are right, it is free speech and I just expressed mine.
Bill Clinton registered for the draft. Cadet Bone-spurs said, "Daddy, my foot hurts."
You do know that all males at 18 where required to register for the draft?
Clinton didn't want his pansy ass in jail.
Clinton used political favors and his uncle's political connections to obtain deferments and then falsely promised to join ROTC when they ultimately ran out (and then backed out of his promise when it was clear he wouldn't be drafted).
Keep pretending there's a difference.
No one who saw the video of Trump bald faced lying to those US soldiers in Iraq could possibly think that criticism of this idiot is based on "derangement syndrome". It is based on hearing him and observing him.
When are the Trumpsters of this forum, and elsewhere, going to stop embarrassing themselves by parroting pro-Trump nonsense ?
The article is not about the draft, it is about Trump lying through his teeth to American soldiers.

I made this comment 4 or 5 hours ago
Some people began to address the topic of the seed, so I didn't lock it.
If you didn't want people commenting to a comment, then you should have had it flagged and removed. But of course any negative comment involving Trump is allowed to stand even if it degrades our own soldiers.
no one in their right mind can defend Trump lying to the troops, so they come on here and try and steer the discussion elsewhere. i know what is going on.
Paula Bartholomew commented on the topic of the article.
What are NT standards in your opinion, Sunshine.
Speaking of bone spurs..
oops..LOL
There is more than one way of taking your comment MUVA.
I bet you voted for Obama?
Trump is degrading our own soldiers.
No matter how you cut it, she disparaged American troops overseas as deplorables simply because those may not have agreed with hers and others political views. That still makes what she said wrong and still a insult to said troops. That in itself makes her comment off topic!
I believe there was absence of malice, but, i'm sure you have your own take on her comment.
I would be a tad more concerned about LIES from our POTUS personally, and these Lies were told to our men and women in uniform, after twitter boy caused Mattis, as well as the guy who's in charge of ridding US of
IS'LS, in the Middle East Bret McGurk
Either way, Trumps words, imho, are far worse than hers.
So we should act like Trump?
Paula is not their Commander in Chief
I am referring solely to her comments. I am fully aware of what Trump said and I do not agree with what he said. It was wrong to tell the troops that.
Thank goodness.
As i stated, only my take on her comment, and you are most certainly entitled to yours.
I'm glad to see we both see Trumps comments as wrong.
I don't agree with many on a lot, but i always support our Men and Women in uniform.
They are why we can even have this discussion.
I thank you, and all veterans for your service
No she disparaged the ones falling all over themselves to get selfies as deplorables.
No, it's her right to express her opinion, whether you agree or not.
Agreed 100%
No, it does not. Her comments were about Trump and the supposed pay raise. Definitely on topic.
We are not going to completely agree here, so how about we just agree to disagree and let it go at that okay? I will comment no further on this. Have a good day.
classy
The article is about Trump lying to the troops in Iraq, not something that Paula Bartholomew said.
If any of you have some comment about the topic of the seed fine. Otherwise I will lock it.
Trump doesn't seem to know how to tell the truth. It's so easy to check and anyone that has been in the military for more than a year should know it is BS.
Can't tell you how many times we saw people fawn over Bush, Clinton or Bush to get their pictures taken with them etc
then walk away muttering some sort of derogatory remarks...
2.6 is high for the most recent 6 years but it's anemic compared to the years back to 1993.
No one in uniform believes this 10% fairy tail.
smh
When you see Trump's statements to the troops about the pay raise on video, it is even much more disgusting. He has so much enthusiasm and conviction about his lies !
I think this bs may be for the benefit of his base. Don't be surprised if you start to see right wingers start saying on social media , " President Trump gave American soldiers a 10 percent pay raise, MAGA"
Are his supporters really that stupid? Never mind. I already know the answer.
His lies were off the chart. His constant bragging on himself was nauseating. The fact that he turned what should have been a moral-boosting visit into a campaign rally with his customary Dem trash-talking and MAGA hat-autographing went beyond the limits of douche-baggery. I feel incredibly sorry for any of those young men and women who might have believed his 10% bs. However, I feel even more sorry for the government employees, both here and abroad, who have been deprived of their paychecks at Christmas, while that fool and his wife are galivanting around the globe on a trip that is sure to cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars.
When is enough going to be enough?
No. Make it 10 percent. Make it more than 10 percent.
And it didn’t happen. Not even remotely close. His statement would have exactly as accurate as if he had said “quadruple it”, and his base of uninformed idiots would be parroting that Trump made the troops rich.
Most of us Veterans and active military love President Trump. So refreshing to have a pro America, pro military, pro veterans president. The Trump hating left only see the exaggerations of Trump. But we see his love of our country. What an improvement over Hussein Obama
Did the troops get a 10%+ raise or not? You make the troops out to be idiots.
2.6% for 2019.
Trump actually says that others wanted the raise to be 2 or 3 percent, but he demanded 10.
It is an incredible lie, but since they are still getting a raise I guess Trumpsters don't feel too badly served by the lie.
They are easy to please.
2.4% is only 7.6%+ shy of the make-believe Trump mandate. What a deal maker! Oh wait ...
The Military Times reported that Trump’s initial pay-raise proposal was 2.1 percent, but lawmakers approved the higher 2.4 percent mark.
Not one of the vets I know support trump and I know a lot of vets.
Every veteran I know supports Trump. Maybe if you weren’t around Cuba loving marxists you would meet real Americans
The polls consistently show he has high support from active military and veterans.
that damn Matty, always horsing around with those damn 'Cuban loving marxist's
Mattis has been in Trump's circle...sure has had is share of photo ops with Trump.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Support for Trump is fading among active-duty troops, new poll shows
By: Leo Shane III October 15 2018
i wonder if Trump's recent policy shifts, via twitter no less, have sunk that percentage even lower, as his tweets caused two very well respected and decorated individuals to resign their posts.
How do you defend this liar in chief?
I'm curious as to how evangelicals can defend one whose whole life has been the antithesis of moral behavior?
they apparently must hold their noses and accept this alleged Billionaire and his multiple moral bankruptcies , due to his pseudo conservative agenda, though his choices for Judges, deserve him a long sentence
with an exclamation point
He lies constantly. Lying is a way of life for him. His supporters are like children who believe in Santa.
Anyone who tells a Trump supporter the truth, they put their fingers in their ears and run away, they will never let go of the fantasy of Trump as their "savior".
2.6% was the raise in just "Base" pay, as noted in the article. The article actually does note a hike in percentage for housing pay but you have to click some buried link to find that part out (although not a headliner). Makes me wonder what other "pay/perks" the military get's that went up, that this "Report" is failing to note in their so-called "FAKE CHECK" article title !
Seems to me....so-called "FACT CHECKING", should include EVERYTHING that went up for the troops, when reported as "FACT CHECKED" !
Interesting !
What actually is the total percentage the troops got as a raise anyway ?
nowhere near 10n % and what abut him saying he caused their 10% pay increase, or that they hadn't had one in a decade...?
C'mon man, it's NOT THERE
Do you have a Link showing all raises given to the Military folks ?
OR
Just articles like this that "Cherry Pick" what thy want to ………. (Snicker Face) …….. "Fact Check" ?
I'll wait for YOUR PROOF that will go POOF
Proof of what ?
Did you actually comprehend my comment #11, or are you just being silly ...... like this article is ?
"Imitation" of an "All the Facts lacking" article......really isn't flattering !
Do you know anyone in the Armed Services?
Try asking one if they received a 10% increase this year.
Actually..... 3 !
They aren't pouty faces for sure !
Historical base rate records.
BAS Basic allowance for Subsistance
Defense Budget proposed 2.9% (2018 & 2019) in Defense Budget, 2018 received .3% 2019 was actually 0%
BAH Basic Allowance for Quarters/Housing
Defense Budget proposes 2.9% (every year ) 2018 the actual increase was .7% The 2019 increase is actually 2.55% However BAH used to cover 99% of actual housing expenses and that has been reduced to 95%
So, no, it doesn't appear to add up to anywhere near 10%
So, no, it doesn't appear to add up to anywhere near 10%"
I never claimed just 2 "Things" did.
Let me know where I did.
i thank u
for doing his proof that went poof
You asked for a history of military pay raises. Check
You implied that there might be more to Trump's 10% than just Base pay. Yes there is. Every Defense Budget addresses BAS & BAH separately.
The three components of a service members pay are Bas, BAS, BAH and for some enlisted members, combat pay which is a fixed rate of $225.00 per month.
None of it adds up to 10%
Oh my, you might have to chase a link?
I gave you the information here
While the 2019 rate was increased by 2.55% the allowable coverage dropped from 99% to 95%, the difference which the service member is expected to cover out of pocket.
No problem for a fellow believer
No.....Nothing about "History" in my comment.
1. Base Pay honest Upgrade ?
2. Housing Allowance honest upgrade ?
3. Food Allowance honest upgrade ?
4. Family Separation Allowance honest upgrade ?
5. Combat Pay Honest upgrade ?
6. Tax Advantage honest upgrade ?
7. Family Subsistence Supplemental Allowance honest upgrade ?
8. Clothing (Uniform) Allowance honest upgrade ?
9. Child Support Allowance honest upgrade ?
10. Job-Related Pay honest upgrade ?
To name a few others.
There is much more involved than only the Three !
Trump specifically said "pay raise" - nice try, though.
1 base pay - addressed multiple times, 2.6%
2 BAH addressed multiple times 2.55% - increase coupled with a loss of 4% ( 99% coverage down to 95% )
3 BAS already addressed - zero percent increase for 2019
4 FSA for those few who qualify a flat fee of $250 per month
5 Combat pay - already addressed - a flat fee of $225.00 for enlisted members only
6 TAX Advantage not part of anyone's pay, no changes to IRS rules for BAH exemptions, combat pay tax exemptions. Why bring it up?
7 FSSA per the Defense Budget of 2016 is being phased out in favor of SNAP (same formula) DOD's data shows that fewer than 300 people qualify for FSSA worldwide.
8 Uniform allowances vary from service to service for both officers and enlisted, there is no data for across the board increases or decreases although many individual articles are no longer eligible for replacement as uniforms evolve per service.
9 Child Support Allowance is a BAH issue and already covered. Members with dependents can continue to receive full BAH while temporarily in barracks due to training or temporary assignments
10 ?
By statute all pre-1986 "allowances" are not taxable.
Ok, semantics?
Many of the comments on this seed are not about the topic, even though being "off topic" has been mentioned numerous times.
The article is not being thankful for the military, or insulting the military. It is about Donald Trump lying to the troops he visited in Iraq when he told them he had gotten them a 10% pay raise (which in reality is 2.6%). A pay raise that he also lied about when he said it was the first one they will have received in 10 years.
I know it is hard for some of you to admit your hero Trump is a bald faced liar, but that is the topic of this discussion.
