MILITARY Coast Guard officer wanted to kill Democrats, TV hosts, say prosecutors

Christopher Paul Hasson was arrested Feb. 15 on drug and gun charges. Prosecutors say he wanted "to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen."

By   Ken Dilanian and Pete Williams

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant working in the nation's capital lived a secret life as a "domestic terrorist" who aspired to mass murder and compiled a target list of prominent politicians and journalists, federal prosecutors allege in court papers.

Christopher Paul Hasson was arrested Feb. 15 on drug and gun charges, but prosecutors said in a detention memo this week that he intended "to   murder innocent civilians   on a scale rarely seen in this country."

He has espoused extremist views for years, the court papers say, and he read the manifesto of Anders Breivik, the   white supremacist Norwegian terrorist who shot and killed 77 people in 2011.

From January 2017 to January 2019, "the defendant conducted online searches and made thousands of visits for pro-Russian, neo-fascist, and neo-Nazi literature," the document says.

190220-christopher-paul-hasson-ew-634p_7 Christopher Paul Hasson

"I am dreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth," reads a draft email found on his computer. "I think a plague would be most successful but how do I acquire the needed/ Spanish flu, botulism, anthrax not sure yet but will find something."

In another letter to himself found on his computer, court papers say, he says, "I am a long time   White Nationalist , having been a skinhead 30 plus years ago before my time in the military."

The   Coast Guard   flagged him because of internet searches of extremist web sites at work, a federal law enforcement officer told NBC News.

"He wasn't too surprised to be arrested, but he was worried about law enforcement officers entering his home, the official said.

A search of his Silver Spring, Maryland, residence yielded 15 firearms and 1,000 rounds of ammunition, the court documents say.

He was abusing the narcotic tramadol, and he had stockpiled 30 bottles of human growth hormone, prosecutors said in court papers.

The combination of drugs and guns was a significant concern, the federal law enforcement official said.

Prosecutors allege Hasson was following Breivik's manifesto, seeking to target "political leaders, media leaders, cultural leaders, and industry leaders."

They say he searched the web for MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, and "compiled a list of prominent Democratic Congressional leaders, activists, political organizations, and MSNBC and CNN media personalities."

Prosecutors say the list included designations they believe referred to Democratic Sens. Richard Blumenthal, Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, Tim Kaine, Kirsten Gillibrand and Cory Booker; House Speaker Nancy Pelosi; and House Democrats Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Maxine Waters, Ilhan Omar and Sheila Jackson. Also on it was former Rep. Beto O'Rourke and former Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

190220-uscg-human-growth-hormone-ew-516p When agents searched the defendant's residence, they say they found a locked container that held 30 bottles labeled as HGH, human growth hormone. U.S. Attorney's Office in Maryland

Media figures on the list included Scarborough, MSNBC hosts Chris Hayes and Ari Melber, and CNN's Don Lemon, Chris Cuomo and Van Jones.

On the same day he compiled the list of prominent people, Jan. 17, the defendant performed the following Google searches at the following approximate times, court papers say:

8:54 a.m.: "what if trump illegally impeached"

8:57 a.m.: "best place in dc to see congress people"

8:58 a.m.: "where in dc to congress live"

10:39 a.m.: "civil war if trump impeached"

11:26 a.m.: "social democrats usa"

"The defendant is a domestic terrorist, bent on committing acts dangerous to human life that are intended to affect governmental conduct," the detention memo says.

I can agree I don't want civil war .I don't call for people to be hurt I just want to be left alone and play with my grandson and soon to be grand whatever my daughter doesn't want to know the sex of her new baby coming in september

You aren't one of the people I was referring to.  You and I may disagree on Trump, but I don't recall you calling for civil war if he is found guilty of something, whether or not you agree with the charges.

I hope you have a healthy grandbaby!  May I recommend a great book .. Richard Scarrey What Do People Do All Day ... for your grandson, if he's at least 3.  It shows how houses are built, how farms work, all kinds of things that are still relevant. All while looking for Mortimer Mouse and Lowly Worm.  I helped teach my neighbor's kids to read with that book ... the same book my mom gave me in 1966 .. and when they moved, their 13 year old asked to if she could take it with them.  I gave it to her. She's now in the Navy with a 1 year old, and she and her husband will be using that very same book to teach her daughter to read.

And, Dulay, that's a damn good question - how could he have stayed under cover?  There's nothing that tells what his MOS was - only that he was an LT and worked in the Nation's capitol.  When I was in the CG and assigned to DC, we were still under DOT and we either got to work at HQ on Buzzard's Point, DOT HQ or as a liaison at the Pentagon.

He don't look like he's sharp enough to have worked at any of those.  My biggest question is why didn't something show up on his annual OER?

From what I read he was a supply guy, 'Quartermaster'?

They need to do a review and check out why this guy COULD stay 'under cover', IF he did...It all depends on the mindset of his Command...He was less than 2 years from mandatory retirement.

The article says he was taking tramadol, a long-term pain reliever for moderate to severe (continuous) pain. Being a narcotic it has side effects like agitation, confusion and hallucinations and the typical more serious side effects of narcotics, which is depressed breathing (possibly fatal) and beating your liver up some and to a lesser degree, beats up your kidneys. There is mention of one other possible side effect with tramadol, which is breast cancer.

so, in this picture I think he was making a funny about the possible breast cancer side effect. No doubt he thought only women can get breast cancer.

I see the HGH he was hoarding is injectable, which is the only way it's useful because digestion ruins most or all hormones. Something to think about when you see the adds about testosterone and pre-testosterone and HGH pills, you can save your money. There is some use for HGH, like for HIV/AIDS and children with a growth abnormality and a few other similar applications, but it actually doesn't have much effect on people beyond adolescence according to the actual lab tests so far, BUT....

There is number of people (NOT Doctors) who believe that HGH will make a older adult male GROW bigger and with bigger muscles, who believe they are a fountain of youth in a pill. There are, unfortunately, Doctors who are willing to write a script to allow fools to get their hands on it. I wonder how many "Doctors" he went to in how many cities to stockpile that much HGH.

However, HGH mixed with injected steroids will most likely give you a fatal heart attack by the time you're in you mid forties/early fifties and cause tooth loss, big time liver and kidney damage and often makes you insanely aggressive among other physical and mental damage.

In an email to Navy Times, Coast Guard spokesman Chief Warrant Officer Barry Lane said that Hasson was the target of an ongoing probe by the Coast Guard Investigative Service.

This was in the Navy Times . They also state that he was in the Marine Corps and Army National Guard from 1988 to 1993...but I don't see how long he was in the Coast Guard. Since this is an open case, I guess we must wait for more information.

Well cms5, the usual promotion timeframe - if you entered the CG directly from the Academy - was - from Ensign to Ltjg - 18 months; Ltjg to LT- 36 months; LT to LCDR - 48 to 60 months; LCDR to CDR - 48 to 60 months and gawd only knew how long to CAPT or ADM.  Now, if he was an OCS type, such as I was, you couldn't apply for OCS until you reached E-5, which time limit depended upon testing factors/positions/retirements/advancements/etc., but, usually it took your first 4 years service contract period.

Now, if, as stated, he was prior service, he may have been able to enlist as an E-5, depending on his MOS and what his prior service DD-214 stated his discharge was.  The DD-214 usually has a block that can be checked that will state that the individual "could be eligible" for re-enlistment - but, that's an entirely different ball of wax.  Had he enlisted as an E-5, he still would have had to wait for 36 - 48 months to be able to apply for OCS.

But, then again - '88-93 - 5 years - having served in the USMC and ANG - bells should have been going off. The Navy will offer a two-year active duty enlistment, but they couple it with a two or four-year active (drilling) Navy Reserve commitment. The minimum active duty enlistment periods offered by the Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps is four years.  The ANG still has an 8 year commitment, but you can serve 2 years active and six IRR (don't understand Army lingo - sorry).

May not be much help, but maybe Kavika or one of the other military vets can fill in the blanks.

Yes under Trumps command he was apprehended and brought to light. If one gives credit to Obama for catching Osama one should also give credit to Trump for catching this guy.

Trump didn't catch this guy, trump's rhetoric was a call to arms for this pos domestic terrorist.

And not a word from trump or any of his trumplican minions about this threat to murder politicians and members of the press. Shameful!

You can bet your bottom dollar if this POS were an illegal trump would be tweeting about this like flies on shit.

So by that standard, Trump is in command of the 'Deep State' and get's 'credit' for all of the actions taken by the Mueller team and the SDNY.

So you're saying he was triggered by political opposition to Trump and he's a snowflake. Sounds about right...

well you would be wrong..... trump had nothing to do with this. plus Osama was a listed suspect, this guy was not.

i find it interesting the need to suggest trump should get acknowledgement for doing nothing. You have exposed yourself.

they are not equal in any way..

much less the fact that this guy is noted and confirmed to associate with white supremacist........so feel free to show me where Trump made any comments denouncing this type of group.......................aaah cough cough.

What rhetoric is that? It appears to me that the left simply can't handle the truth about themselves

you are working this thread really hard to make someone bite on your silly comments and misspellings.

but what is more telling is your need to do so in such a manner as to appear to disregard the fact that this guy was going to kill Americans....or does that go over your head?

Go have your coffee

Done.

and come back in and have a discussion.

So here is something I noticed about the picture of the 'stuff' they confiscated through the warrant. Notice that there are 2 bullet proof vests and 2 sets of ballistic plates. The vests look to be two different sizes.

Where is the SECOND person.

The existence of a SECOND person creates the predicate for a conspiracy charge...

So I know the 'one is none, two is one' credo.

Is THAT why he's got 2 vests or is there a second person?

I think that your right on that 9mm.....But, there is always a but...I'm sure that the investigation is taking all aspects of this into consideration.

What blew me away was that he did some of this on his CG computer and that's how they found out about this plan.

Plus, the 'camo' one looks like it has all pistol mag carrier pouches, while the grey one has rifle magazine pouches.

They are both Molle gear so he set them up that way for some reason. My vest has both as does my gun belt. I don't have ballistic plates so I don't know much about them.

I believe that the investigators will take the 2 or more person probability seriously. They cannot afford to be complacent on something like this.

I'll tend to believe it's only him.

Just read that he lives in a cramped basement apartment with his wife and dogs. I have a three bedroom 1400 sq. ft. house and couldn't stash that much without my wife knowing about it. Hell, I have a hard time keeping her from finding her B-day presents.

It's strange that he is a good salary from the CG, owns and rents out a house in NC, has $13,000 in gear and lives in a cramped basement rental. His wife must be very 'understanding'. Mine wouldn't be...

This guy was way off the deep end.   Probably a combination of the drugs (Tramadol) and the HGH (likely cause of the moobs) totally fried what brain cells he had left.

Which leads me to wonder, WTF was his wife DOING about it? Even if she is a 'submissive' type, she had to know that he was 'escalating'.

My wife, while not as much as I do, enjoys shooting.

My wife was a Fed and a Sheriffs Deputy. Her groupings are far better than mine. We've sold off most of what we had to pay medical bills. Still like to hit the range 4 Xs a year and tune up. We're due for out spring shoot in March. She has a thing for a revolver right now so July may bring a B-Day addition here too.

The largest available on the market, was like putting a bikini top on "The Rock".... didn't cover very much!!

They had the opposite issue with my wife. Ain't nothin' but a minute and a men's small was WAY too big. They had to fit and special order her Kevlar. She got to keep it when she left TN.

I just went back and read the pertinent portion of the 'PATRIOT ACT'. The new definition of 'domestic terrorist' has this guy nailed. If wifey or one of his buddies was part of it, that's conspiracy to commit. Double whammy.
