Trump Says Let Democratic Cities Rot

Karen Tumulty

@ktumulty

Have we lost our capacity to be shocked? The President of the United States -- who is supposed to lead an entire nation -- just retweeted someone urging "Leave Democrat cities. Let them rot."

Brandon Friedman

@BFriedmanDC

"Leave Democrat cities. Let them rot." This is from the commander-in-chief, the President of the United States, further confirming that we are presently in a cold civil war.

Sunday afternoon, President   Donald Trump   retweeted a tweet posted by a supporter that called for Democrat-led cities to be abandoned and left to rot.

The original tweet was posted by   Brandon Straka , a pro-Trump activist who made headlines in June for   getting banned from American Airlines for refusing to wear a face mask . Straka’s tweet shared a video clip purporting to show protesters in New York City’s Times Square.

“Leave Democrat cities,” wrote Straka. “Let them rot. The media and @TheDemocrats have activated this mental illness and it’s going to get more and more people hurt and killed.”

Dishonest Donald certainly is not the President for all of us. And that's not claiming he's not President, of course he is. He simply caters to his base and no one else. It's rather funny to me as these rural white southern and Midwest folk bitch and moan about being forgotten by the "coastal elites" but as soon as they're in power they work effortlessly to exclude and de-fund their opponents as if it's a zero sum game where they have to diminish and exterminate their opposition instead of recognizing that liberals, progressives, minorities, lgtbq Americans are just as American as they are and deserving of every right that they claim they deserve. When progressives are in power they try to help everyone in need which simply isn't so of their right wing counterparts. In fact many on the right bitch and moan about progressives while filing for and receiving the entitlements that progressives fought to get them.

The Trump administration has been the most corrupt administration in modern history.

Sounds like he wants a very large portion of the US to rot.

This is an interesting graph. In 2020 of the top100 cities in the US. 29 had Republican mayors, 64 Democratic and 7 Independent.

In gooses defense I would think that would entirely depend on IF he has lived In both the rural and urban setting in his life time , I know I have, 20 years in boston and its suburbs and took advantage  of all the cultural educational and entertainment qualities offered to a hometown boy , been to ALL the major US cities , as well as a number in Europe and in the middle east. I think that is a pretty well rounded basis for making any judgement call that would affect myself

I think it would be safe to say that if the same is true for him , and he lives in a predominantly rural area , he had already such as myself made a judgement on urban life and the quality of it for ones self .

We can all like rural life better when we our constitution is suited to it, generally speaking, city people like hamlets and the wilderness in their aging years. However, the young want something (generally) more upbeat and exhilarating. So what's to criticize*? Wildfires largely occur in the countryside (beautiful and pristine as it is). They do their work (damages) and then new growth and rebuilding start all over again-sometimes without the former human occupants.

The grass is not always greener on the other side. Cities do not all fail, burn, or suffer cyclic catastrophes. Certainly cities don't burn with the exception of people lighting fires to protest a greater grievance of not being heard by their officials!

* Your statement on city life is ambiguous and leaves much to the imagination. Care to be more explicit?

what would you like explained or expanded ? I was young , and as you said young people tend to want more upbeat things , so yes I while in boston experienced as much of the different cultures , cuisine  and party atmosphere as I could  I also took advantage of all the different libraries  from the multitude  of institutions of higher learning as well as the public assets in things that had caught my interest , usually it was history, both local and national with a smattering of world history . I always found adults or people close to my own age but not quite peers to have discussions with , they seemed amused and amazed someone my age took such an interest in things .

I got to see the world curtesy of Uncle Sugar and the military , at minimal cost to myself , and had enough time off to be able to travel you can go a long ways in 3 days off in a row , and Europe isn't all that big really , at least not the parts I could go to in the 80s.

I went suburb when I started having kids , and later went rural as both myself and they got older , method behind the madness was they too would want the upbeat and exciting and leave home of their own free will .

I can say every major city in the world I have been to , has had both its good and bad , every singe one has had its own multicultural experience that it was alright to explore  , but I have already chosen how and where I choose to live , The entire point is , if you choose to live somewhere , you take care of it , and not let others in fits of anger or disparity make it worse . destruction brings no worthwhile changes.

 Is that explained well enough?

You explain yourself well. Thank you. Black people in cities may not have those privileges you enjoy to relocate, the openness and especially safety (positivity) you expect when you move into the 'outdoors,' and may possess limited control over their living (rental) environments in cities.

And yes, some of that is by social engineering design (for and against people of color). For instance, people can "sweep around their own doorsteps" and hold to high-minded standard of community, but. What good is any 'standard' or standards when outside forces won't let you live in them in peace. That is, outside influencers, policy-makers, and "authorities" keep razing or unending any and all sense of community? (By killing elements of the citizenry haphazardly, demoralizingly,  and with bare-boned justifications.)

Its not a privilige , its the reward for a lifetime of work and making choices along the way that fostered the ability to do as I set out to all those years ago , anything worthwhile takes a great deal of work and perserverence , and the willingness not to give up or in .

priviliged? yeah I was priviliged to have to work towards what I have achieved , even with a modest inheritance( < $100,000 ) that was parlayed over 40 years into a high 7 figure savings/ retirement asset, I still had to work for what I got .just as everyone else does .

You think its safe here? average response time for any public service such as police , fire , or amb, is 20-30 mins.

Add into the fact that the criminal element also know all this as well and think they can buffalo their way through any situations . so arson ( most likely) assault , or a med emergency , one has to be up to snuff and ready to deal with whatever is thrown at them.

Im not the one that brought up race and it has nothing to do with race , so I think you can guess where people who base things on race can go with that when it comes to me.

people who bring up race to me generally are showing me they are in fact racists , and I do not converse or associate with those sorts by choice., nor do I help them. life gives them what life thinks they deserve , let them curse life .

people who bring up race to me generally are showing me they are in fact racists , and I do not converse or associate with those sorts by choice., nor do I help them. life gives them what life thinks they deserve , let them curse life.*

Ghettos, projects, police shootings and violence, poverty, manipulated setbacks, limited access to bank loans, limited participation in business enterprises, redlining, gentrification, systematic break up of families through "programs," etceteras. . . . Minorities are not "banging" themselves. And, minorities are hard workers too. There are systems in place to see that they indefinitely remain "hard workers" and little more than "hard-workers" limited in generational wealth. Minorities are priced out in the system!

Mark, do not condense or diminish the inequalities of our society down to individual strengths and weaknesses. There will always be a percentage of exceptions or exceptional people who defy any one group of rules!

I, we, should be discussing what is wrong with our society, structurally, that repeatedly is dropping people through its prosperity floorboards to bottom out.

Race? You ask? Why are white police officers being repeatedly videoed shooting and otherwise taking the lives of black boys and black men? It deserves greater investigation and understanding. It is not normal! It is not enough to say the youth and older men do not follow "instructions." Other boys and men are not any better at following authority "commands" and are alive, healthy, and prospering as I write this.

Thus, the cities are on fire, because the 'answers' and ideas returning from authorities are UNSAT!  People act out in the streets because what they have is great frustrations and they can not contain it after a time. The explanations are weak and wanting.

It is not enough to simply say to outraged and confused families, friends, and communities, 'Go ye and be well!' After so many unexplained lives have been excised helter-skelter. Of course, these murders are occuring in cities and communities of color. Question for you is this:

What would you feel/want answers to/do about it if authorities in your rural community began haphazardly killing friends, relatives, and otherwise community associates?

*Unless you have studied the issue of police shooting of minority youth and adult males to its conclusion, you have no reason or ability to rule out implicit, explicit, or systemic racism.

Just so you know, I have contacted via email on the web, BLM, asking for some official statement as to to their protest policies. I will let you know what I hear back. Granted people can blow things out of proportions when they protest, protest strongly, or protest violently. A solution is to hear the UNHEARD rather than just to 'clock' (document) their anger and rage!

That being said. You 'delivered' from you POV. Thank you. I will take what I saw in your links under advisement. One caveat: Not the RT.com link however. I am dubious about them most of all.

“So should Blue States stop paying to fund Red States that have mismanaged their States since Red States are more dependent on the federal government?“

Blues states carry red states is a popular liberal talking point that is not entirely true. Every state with a balance of payment ratio of less than one pays more to the federal government through taxes than they receive. States with a ratio higher than one pay less than they receive.
There are blue states with a ratio higher than one. There are red states with a ratio lower than one. In other words, those red states are carrying blue states with a ratio higher than one.

income is also more of a factor than political policies. Typically, red states (think southern states) have a lower pay rate for the same job than other states. The more people make, the more they pay. Like it or not, that is how our system works. So of course many red states will lag behind simply because income is not on par with other parts of the country.
another factor that throws a monkey wrench into the “political policy” theory liberals like to use is welfare programs. Recipients must earn below a certain threshold to get these benefits, which skews the ratio even further. Which states will receive more welfare benefits, lower income or higher income states?

Sadly, it’s not as easy as just saying “blue states bail out red states” because there are many variables that come into play. If one wants to look at blue states vs red states One can also look at the fiscal health of each state. This is where blue states lag and some will, at some point, need a bailout to deal with unfunded pensions, two come quickly to mind, california and illinois

Of the states that 'carry' other states, ONLY 2 red states get less than they send, Nebraska and Utah, who combined total less than a billion.

JUST the first 5 states with the most disparity in the amount the send in vs what they receive combine for over 68 BILLION. Hell Minnesota comes damn close to loosing as much and Nebraska and Utah combined.

There are other variables too. There are red states who will have to be 'bailed out' to deal with the fact that they've polluted their fresh water supply, two quickly come to mind, Texas and Oklahoma.

Blues states carry red states is a popular liberal talking point that is not entirely true.

While claiming workers earn less in red States than blue states is a convenient cop-out as to why they pay less in taxes and receive more in benefits, in general the fact remains, Blue States are far more likely to pay into the federal government more than their citizens get back in benefits or entitlements. Red States, who as you have said earn less and pay less in taxes, are the most vocal voices proclaiming they pay too much in taxes and have the erroneous belief that they pay more than blue States as they continue to falsely claim the blue States just want "free stuff". If red States are so against "free stuff" you would think they might refuse the entitlements and thus be the States and party of fiscal conservatism. Instead we find they are more likely to benefit from at least one entitlement than their liberal counterparts and the last 6 conservative Republican Presidents have increased deficit spending and increased the debt far more than their Democrat counterparts. These are simple facts that those in the Red States seem to want to sweep under the carpet and constantly lie about.

"when the lens shifts to political ideology, the survey finds virtually no difference in the share of conservatives (57%), liberals (53%) or political moderates (53%) who have been assisted by at least one entitlement program ."

Perhaps if conservatives started being honest about their own apparent lust for entitlements and stopped lying about liberals and progressives we could actually come together for entitlement reform.

I have to assume trump is talking about cities that have  elected democrat city officials  in place, that sat back and allowed rioting and looting to go on all the while holding back their LEO personnel.

I actually think telling people to think about if its time to leave a place because the local , city or state authorities can not  or refuse to provide even minimal police or or any other public service such as fire or EMT , is not a bad idea. and that is a choice the individual people will have to make .

Now if he is talking about federal moneys to rebuild what was destroyed and looted ,I would have to say that is up to the local , city and state governments and not the feds to figure out how to do that since it was their direct choices that allowed the destruction and looting to take place in the first place ..

and if the feds wont fork over funds , imagine how hard it will be to convince the investor , large or small to invest in an area that has suffered riots and looting , without police protection. Detroit is a good example .

True the big problem is many times over the last sixty year they have taken money from the federal taxpayers and Michigan taxpayers and funneled it into Detroit with no good results. It's still a violent dump that went bankrupt and all that money that was taken from the taxpayer and given to Detroit was wasted. I can't tell you how many times over the years the media and politicians have claimed Detroit was going to recover and it never did. We have a plant in Detroit and it requires armed guards 24/7.

What does that say about some conservatives who exist in a dwindling population?

Furthermore, cities would run themselves a lot better if ever some conservatives would keep their self-righteous (not a good thing) 'noses' out of being part of the problem—not partial to the solution.

It is not my responsibility to 'school' you beyond a basic discussion. Moreover, what liberal problems exist in those cities can be worked out without some conservative exaggerated inputs!

states should not be bailed out if their problems are a direct result of that state's political policy,

Interesting.

So when a state and local political policy exacerbates the effect of a 'natural disaster', we shouldn't give them any federal money to rebuild that shit.

Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Florida keep rebuilding in flood plains and fail to mitigate the issue, 'disaster' after 'disaster'. No more money for them.

Wow, 5 links.

3 don't work.

1 is about Yosemite Valley flooding. Perhaps you can scrap up some relevance for that.

And 1, behold, actually talks about out-migration, which started while Arnold was Governor and continued throughout the drought. It doesn't go into the REASONS for said out-migration much and gives not evidence for what it does say.

One would think that if voting in Democrats caused all of this, it would have started long ago. Hell the Bay Area has been a Democratic enclave for over half a century but it's population is STILL growing. LA County has been Democratic since the mid 80's and it's still growing too.

Oh, FFS,

Look, I know how hard this must be for you to take.

I'll make it easy for you:

1st link:

So, what’s wrong with New York, California and Illinois?

If you ask somebody from any number of red states, they’ll likely you tell you “plenty.” And the latest numbers from the Census Bureau would suggest they’re not wrong, considering some 3.2 million more people left those blue states than came in from other states from 2010 through 2019.

2nd link:

California outmigration jumps 38% as departures rise for 7th straight year

Census figures show 691,145 Californians last year left for other states — the largest loss nationally and up 4.6% in a year

3rd link:

A new study by Atlas Van Lines that tracked migration patterns throughout the country in 2019 found more Americans are moving to Idaho than any other state. The Gem State continued a pattern of drawing new residents, ranking as the survey’s inbound leader for the second time since 2017. On the other hand, more people are looking to escape from New York, the nation’s outbound move leader last year, a designation the Empire State also held in 2014. The study by the national moving company found that 26 states registered as balanced, meaning that moves in and out of the states and Washington, D.C., were roughly equal. The data also showed a decrease in moves from 2018 to 2019.

4th link:

For the seventh straight year, more people left California than moved in, according tonew censusdata.

5th link:

“People are leaving New York, not just hanging out in the Hamptons,” said Mark Klein, tax attorney and partner at Hodgson Russ in New York. “It used to be that they’d move to Florida, but now it’s Wyoming, Texas, Tennessee,” he said. “People from California are moving to Nevada.”

I hope this illuminates things for you, but like I said, I can't understand it for you.
