NYC sheriffs break up indoor wedding with nearly 300 guests
New York City sheriffs break up indoor wedding in Queens with nearly 300 guests amid rising Covid-19 cases.

Sept. 28, 2020

New York City sheriffs broke up an indoor wedding reception with nearly 300 people in Queens late Friday evening, officials said.

Just before midnight, deputies were tipped off by an anonymous complaint about social distancing violations at catering hall Royal Elite Palace, where authorities found "large groups of people entering the location," officials told NBC New York.

Upon arrival, deputies found 284 guests inside the venue violating state and city coronavirus restrictions, the NYC sheriff's office said in a tweet.

The wedding had live music and served food and alcohol without following social distancing guidelines, according to NBC New York.

Videos and photos posted to social media and tagged to the location on Friday night show an overcrowded room filled with party goers without face coverings. NBC News was unable to confirm whether these images are the same group that was in the venue when the police busted the wedding.

The crowd was dispersed by deputies, and the hall's manager and owner were charged with multiple offenses, according to the sheriff's office. The manager received four citations, and the owner was given two for violating the mayor's emergency coronavirus measure.

The wedding venue did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The bust comes amid warnings from Mayor Bill de Blasio and health officials to stymie the recent surge of Covid-19 clusters in Brooklyn and Queens. Hours before the raid on Friday, health officials warned that new lockdown restrictions may be implemented if outbreaks could not be contained.

"This may be the most precarious moment that we're facing since we have emerged from lockdown," Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi said at a Friday press conference.

"We will move as swiftly as the situation warrants," he said. "If this growth continues, it will turn into widespread transmission potentially citywide."

On Sunday, NYC health officials identified Covid-19 outbreaks in eight neighborhoods that outpaced the citywide average by 3.3 times over the last two weeks. Woodside, where the venue is located, was not listed among the neighborhoods at risk of being shut down.

Last month, an indoor, nearly 65-guest wedding in Maine was found to be linked to the deaths of seven people who didn't attend, and the infections of 176 people who either attended the wedding or got the virus second-hand as a result of someone who attended the wedding.

Sandy,

This is the part that annoys me the most. Even if I do everything right, I can still be infected by one of these idiots. Hopefully, since it was "broken up" by the police, then they are now quarantined for the next two weeks to contain if they were exposed to the virus.

My suggestion to you Dean is that you do some checking.

California has a 2.9% positivity rate. Florida has a 10.7% positivity rate.

On Sunday California did 151,354 COVID tests and had 2955 positive cases. For the same day Florida did 8,231 test and had 738 positive cases.

For Monday Florida had 3266 positive tests and 108 more deaths.

Thank you for showing that my figures are correct. I see no mention of the positivity rate nor the number of tests done in your comment. I use John Hopkins reports and the Florida dashboard (one of the best in the country)

If you look at the total number of cases and the total deaths for each state you'll see that CA with a population of 40 million vs Florida with a population of 21 million has a far better result in mitigating both the number of cases and the deaths.

For Monday, as I stated above in Florida the number of new cases was 3266 and the number of deaths was 108.

With respect to Ender's screen door proposal, I'd suggest getting a couple of additional cinder blocks to put under the screen so the cats can go in and out without you even having to fuss with them.  Remember.... The blocks are free.

Fighting cats and dogs.....something to ponder.

Both excellent ideas. I mean Wally likes catnip, so catnip with a kick will make for a happy kitty... or 6.

Now about sharecropping, I am going to have to find someone with the seeds. I guess this leads me to a moral dilemma. If I take the car and the blocks from the house down the road that I thought was abandoned, but they were just out hunting Possium for Possum pie, they might not want to share their seeds unless I have some way to make it up to them for my mistake without giving them back car and the blocks.

Does goat milk seem like a reasonable gift? Or do I have to give up the goats because then I am back to a gardening issue?

A wedding reception is the problem?  Look closely.  The people who are protesting are not social distancing.  Reporters talking to protesters are not social distancing.  People are removing their masks to speak into microphones.  People are not wearing their masks properly.  Some are not wearing masks.  People are packed together.

If you look, the protests are at night.

The right to assemble peacefully and the right of association aren't limited to protests.

I was not happy about the protests, but there you have it.

A wedding reception is a one-time event.  The protests have been on-going for months.  Look at the demographics for infections and fatalities.  The evidence suggests that being unhappy but resigned to accept the situation isn't sufficient.  The Sheriff should be dispersing protests for the same reason wedding receptions are dispersed.

Indoor activities like this are forbidden in NYC. Indoor activities spread the virus the most as proven by the other wedding in the article.

Lack of social distancing doesn't make outdoor events any safer.  Are the prohibitions in NYC about safety or politics?

And you are right that there were/ are protests at night. The more recent ones, people have been wearing their masks, but again you are right that there is no social distancing. And as I wrote:

I was not happy about the protests, but there you have it.

You know where else there was no social distancing and no masks?

That's correct.  What's the difference between a political rally and a BLM rally?  Scapegoating Trump rallies doesn't excuse irresponsible behavior by protesters.

What I'm pointing out is that a one-time wedding reception doesn't represent the greatest risk.  And using wedding receptions as a scapegoat doesn't address the greater risk of spreading the virus posed by protests.

Then you didn't read the article. Here:

Last month, an indoor, nearly 65-guest wedding in Maine was found to be linked to the deaths of seven people who didn't attend, and the infections of 176 people who either attended the wedding or got the virus second-hand as a result of someone who attended the wedding.

That was a party of 65 and look at the fallout. This is a wedding of 300. Do the math.

I'm not opposed to prohibiting gatherings, including wedding receptions.  But using wedding receptions as a scapegoat to avoid addressing the risks posed by protests is intellectually dishonest.

The prohibitions are supposed to apply to all gatherings.  Just because a very smart stupid person is pandering for votes doesn't justify scapegoating some gatherings while ignoring other gatherings.

So you don't see any difference? Hate to break the news to you but the protests did not start as some political movement, even though a lot of you all believe other wise.

I would not attend either kind of gathering yet I can understand people getting tired of mistreatment and misjustice yet I cannot understand willfully putting lives at risk just to show off a white dress and cut a cake.

Here's the math that matters.

Weekly Updates by Select Demographic and Geographic Characteristics

The CDC guidelines do not differentiate between types of gatherings.  The guidelines are to avoid all types of crowds.  The CDC does not list any exemptions for that recommendation.  Everyone that refuses to practice social distancing is putting people at risk.

I've asked elsewhere how far we would be willing to go to enforce CDC guidelines.

Ignoring the safety risks posed by protests is nothing more than political pandering.  The prohibition requires dispersing crowds.  What the crowd is doing has no bearing on the safety risk.

I would not attend either kind of gathering yet I can understand people getting tired of mistreatment and misjustice yet I cannot understand willfully putting lives at risk just to show off a white dress and cut a cake.

Understanding does not excuse irresponsible behavior.  No crowds means none, zip, zero.  There isn't any reason that nullifies the safety risks posed by crowds.

No one has ignored the protests. They cannot arrest all the people at a protest any more than they can all the people at a wedding reception.

The protests themselves started out as non political. It was for injustice. It is people running for office and infiltrators making it that way.

I see you think there should be a zero sum policy yet have not once denounced donald holding a rally in defiance of local ordinances.

Nerm,

I have now replied to this many times before. I agree with the CDC guidelines. I didn't agree with the protests happening, but they are constitutionally protected. Bottom line is I think that all mass gatherings and the people attending should rethink their care.

Seems some people have to learn the hard way.

In the city next to me they (in their infinite wisdom) decided they are no longer going to have a homecoming football game. This after players and the coach all tested positive.

That argues there are rights for some but not for all.  If we pick and choose circumstances when other considerations supersedes rights then we end up with political abuse of rights.  Isn't that why we had segregation and Jim Crow?  Isn't that why we have Indian reservations?

People have a right to assemble and associate.  The Constitution does not protect protests any more or less than wedding receptions or rallies.

Protests pose the same safety risks as do wedding receptions or rallies of any kind.  The coronavirus doesn't care.

Bottom line is I think that all mass gatherings and the people attending should rethink their care.

Isn't that the purpose of mandates?  For a mandate to be effective it must be applied uniformly.  Allowing exceptions doesn't follow the science.  And the coronavirus doesn't care.

How is a wedding worth getting sick. I never got the big wedding thing anyway. What is the point? If two people actually loved each other they wouldn't need all that fake bullshit.

Ha. I just think a small intimate setting would be more romantic.

Also, if the father of the bride is willing to spend 20k on a wedding, bring back a dowry.

Give me the 20k towards a down payment on a house.

A lot more practical.

I'm with you. Our wedding was small. My daughter's on the other hand....It was way smaller! I at least got married in a church, she got married on the deck with a Justice of the Peace.

My son just eloped

My wedding was so small just immediate family and a couple of friends for a total of 739 without counting their kids.

Indians have a hard time with small gatherings.

There's my favorite cuz, Luther Walks the Horse. He's right in the center the ones with the feathers.

Here is a photo of Luther after his wife found him. Her maiden name is ''Rebecca Found the Fool''.

Luther is a constant form of entertainment in our family, well actually our tribe. Oh hell, the whole Ojibwe Nation. His weather commentary is priceless and also not for family viewing or listening.

A few weeks ago one of my nieces got married. Originally the wedding was set for May, but of course did not happen. Then they set it for November, but sometime in July decided to change it to the end of August and forego the 200 attendee wedding they had planned . My niece and her husband (now) made arrangements for an outdoor ceremony in a wooded area in the suburbs that is used for that purpose by the township there. It wasnt a breathtaking setting by any means but it was nice enough. The county's rules kept the attendance at the ceremony to 50, but it was in the 90's that day and some of the 50 didnt show.

The reception was held at a bar on the border between Chicago and a suburb, on the suburban side. The city of Chicago would not have permitted it due to covid rules, but the suburban bar, which is literally across the street from the city limits did allow them to have a reception with about 100 people in attendance. It's a nice bar , but not really a substitute for a wedding venue.

They have a small beer garden area at which they put up a big tent and plastic tables to seat about 40 people.

A good time was had by all and as far as I know no covid cases came of it.
