Trump pushes Georgia governor to help overturn Biden election win

  • President Donald Trump called Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Saturday and asked him to convince state legislators to help overturn President-elect Joe Biden's win in Georgia and permit an audit of signatures on the absentee ballots.
  • The request is Trump's latest attempt to interfere with the results of the 2020 presidential election, in a state where two GOP Senate runoff races in January could decide which party controls the Senate.
  • The call was first reported by The Washington Post.

President Donald Trump called Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Saturday and asked him to convince state legislators to help overturn President-elect Joe Biden's win in Georgia and permit an audit of signatures on absentee ballots.

The request is Trump's latest attempt to interfere with the results of the 2020 presidential election in a state where two GOP Senate runoff races in January could decide which party controls the Senate. The call was first reported by The Washington Post.

Trump has argued without evidence that Georgia election officials took voter ballots with signatures that didn't match the ones on file. A recount in Georgia following the election affirmed Biden's victory and the results have been certified.

The president referenced the call in a tweet on Saturday afternoon, calling for a signature audit of Georgia's absentee ballots and claiming discrepancies in the process.

"I will easily & quickly win Georgia if Governor @BrianKempGA or the Secretary of State permit a simple signature verification," Trump wrote. "Has not been done and will show large scale discrepancies. Why are these two "Republicans" saying no? If we win Georgia, everything else falls in place!"

Kemp, a Republican and longtime Trump ally, wrote on Saturday in response to the president's tweet: "As I told the President this morning, I've publicly called for a signature audit three times (11/20, 11/24, 12/3) to restore confidence in our election process and to ensure that only legal votes are counted in Georgia."

In another tweet, the president urged Kemp to "immediately" request a special session in the state legislature.

The governor reportedly declined the president's request during the call, an anonymous source told The Post. Kemp's office's has said publicly that state law prohibits the governor from interfering in elections.

Gabriel Sterling, a Republican official in the Georgia Secretary of State's office, said Trump's baseless claims of election fraud have endangered election officials by inciting death threats and harassment.

Kemp spokesman Cody Hall confirmed that the president called the governor, but only said that Trump offered his condolences on the death of Harrison Deal, a young aide for Sen. Kelly Loeffler. CNBC has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.

Trump is campaigning for Sens. Loeffler and David Perdue in the state tonight, who are facing runoff elections against Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.

To be honest, I'm a little surprised that Gov. Kemp did the right thing.  His statements during the pandemic have made him sound like a mini-Trump.  One million Americans have been infected with covid in these first 5 days of December, so I'm hoping Kemp will start doing the right thing in that respect, as well.

Trump's plane just landed in Georgia for yet another money-begging rally.  I bet it's all about Kemp.  It's also sad that many of those Trump supporters that are jumping up and down like fools right now, will be dead in 4 or 5 weeks.

I mean what? It's winter time, people are coughing and sneezing more all over the place, virus is wafting on the gentle and still breezes, and yet these folks "congregate" as a form of collective freedom ignoring all the science of highly infectious disease transmission.  Sad, but what can you do? Just desserts.

Oh, the same woman who also stated this?

It read: "During a deposition given by me in connection with my matrimonial case, I stated that my husband had raped me.

"I wish to say that on one occasion during 1989, Mr Trump and I had marital relations in which he behaved very differently toward me than he had during our marriage.

"As a woman, I felt violated, as the love and tenderness which he normally exhibited toward me, was absent. I referred to this as a 'rape,' but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.

"Any contrary conclusion would be an incorrect and most unfortunate interpretation of my statement which I do not want to be interpreted in a speculative fashion and I do not want the press or media to misconstrue any of the facts set forth above.

Doesn't Trump understand that if the Republican governor of Georgia (or any state) had hard evidence to support reversing the outcome of the election, they would gladly do it?

The request is Trump's latest attempt to interfere with the results of the 2020 presidential election

This story (like so many Trump stories) is sad enough without the media warping what is happening. Trump isn't "interfering with the results" of an election. "Interfere" makes it sound like he is doing something illegal. He is contesting the election using every legal means at his disposal, but he isn't interfering with anything.

I have said it for five years. There is so much legitimate ground upon which to criticize Trump. Exaggerating the facts weakens the credibility of that criticism.

He is not breaking a law because no one ever considered a president behaving like a spoiled child, LYING to his followers, inciting them with videos full of the same tired LIES over and over. He is trying to CHEAT, no big surprise given his history of doing the same, but Presidents of the USA are supposed to behave with dignity and honor. Trump neither has nor displays either of these qualities.

What he is doing is highly unethical and beneath the dignity of the office that he holds. He is trying to cheat by lying to the people. We need the rest of the republican party to pull up their man panties and condemn what he is doing. Everyone should be doing just that.

Trump is attempting a CONSPIRACY.  Governor Kemp has explained to the Trumphole that he can not do what is asked of him, because there is no provision in Georgia law to do so. And Trump is pressing for a futile exercise anyway!

When will some Trump supporters stop this BS that Trump's piss does not stink? How come everybody else gets "voted off the island" even though Trump is the one who lost?

And Trump is trying his best to pressure the Gov of Georgia to his dirty work for him and bear the brunt of any legal ramifications of doing what Trump wants him to do, resorting to threat, coercion and intimidation, and who knows that all else behind the scenes.

Trump seems determined to force the Gov to do his bidding and cause even more upset to the election, even if it means the Gov being changed for undue interference or worse, while Trump sits back and enjoys skrewing up the election as much as he can.

When the real person interfering is Trump and placing undue duress on the Gov. So why has the law not stepped in yet and stopped trump?

It doesn't need to be illegal to be interference.  Lying to achieve a win is interference. It's not illegal. Just slimy.

However, what he's asking  others to do on his behalf in this case is illegal.  They would be criminals, if they chose to do it, which is why they won't. So, he's urging criminal activity.  And you're worried about the media blowing things out if proportion.

Yes, Trump us attempting to interfere with the election by proxy.   It's by proxy for two reasons - he isn't capable of committing the crime himself, and he doesn't want the consequences of it.

But sure, Tacos, the media is the problem here.

Lying to achieve a win is interference.

So if you tell the voters that under the new health care plan, they will be able to keep their doctor and their plan, if they want, and it's not true . . .

That's just one. We can look at the campaigns of everyone who has ever run for president and find lies, broken promises, and other random BS they said just to get elected. Is that "interference?"

However, what he's asking  others to do on his behalf in this case is illegal.

For example? What law is he trying to have broken? That's all I've been asking.

Donald  Trump  called the governor of  Georgia  on Saturday to pressure him to help overturn the results of the election, according to multiple reports.

...

Mr Kemp has requested that Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger conduct an audit, but his office has also made clear that the governor has no power to order such a move.

“Georgia law prohibits the governor from interfering in elections. The Secretary of State, who is an elected constitutional officer, has oversight over elections that cannot be overridden by executive order,” said Mr Kemp’s spokesman several days ago.

Mr Kemp has also said that he will not call for a special session of the legislature.

Lawyers for Mr Raffensperger have determined that current law gives Georgia legislators no role in seating electors.

That was pretty easy to find.  It's been all over the news lately.  The only excuse for not having seen it is if one is intentionally trying to ignore it, which really isn't an excuse at all.

It is a pretense to be balanced, when these "old heads" know good and damn well they were not brought up to believe that truth does not matter. That standards no matter. That right does not matter. That good does not matter. So here some conservatives are 'gaslighting' social media in some hopes to convince the rest of us well, that we're are the crazy ones - thus, we must not matter either.

It's bullshit and they won't ever have the satisfaction on account of me. They would have to blow out the sun first, but then we would all freeze to death from it happening. (Smile.)

Clarify. Has Trump asked the governor or election officials to break a law? No. What he has done is to ask them to take action, and then left it to them to decide whether or not they have grounds or authority to take such action.

he doesn't like the answers he keeps getting

That's true for a lot of people who appeal to the government for help. It doesn't mean the person asking for help is breaking the law by asking. In fact, the right "to petition the government for a redress of grievances" is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. You would deny Trump that right, apparently, and call him a criminal for exercising it.

No, because Kemp and Raffensperger, among others, know that it's illegal, given that they've already determined there is not cause to do so.  But Trump is still making demands.  Ergo, Trump is asking them to do something illegal.  Seems like those dots would be pretty easy to connect.

Nobody here has denied Trump any rights.  He's had his day in court.  Forty-six of them, last time I checked.  He's also had recounts, either automatically required by law (Georgia) or demanded by his campaign (Wisconsin where he ended up losing even more bigly, oops).  Never mind that even if he were to somehow get Kemp and Raffensperger to break the law for him, like he keeps asking them to do, he'd still be a loser.  Sixteen EC votes won't get him to 270.

Yeah, Democrats would never start a conspiracy that voting machines robbed an election from a candidate. And they would certainly never spread a conspiracy claiming that the President was a foreign agent or that a foreign country had changed votes in an election, causing a majority of Democrats to believe a foreign country stole a Presidential election. Certainly, years after the election, 50 million odd Democrats wouldn't believe a foreign power changed vote tallies and the losing Democratic nominee still wouldn't be calling the winner an illegitimate  President.

Democrats would never directly attack Democracy like that....

This story (like so many Trump stories) is sad enough without the media warping what is happening. Trump isn't "interfering with the results" of an election.

You must be kidding.  He threatened Kemp with consequences if he didn't overturn Biden's win.  When Gov. Kemp said no, Trump went nuts with the twitter attacks.  Trump's behavior at tonight's Georgia rally will probably seal Gov. Kemp's re-election fate in 2022.  I plan to watch for as long as I can stand it, but I guarantee the entire thing will be about what a horrible person Kemp is.

There are times where you seem to understand what kind of low-character man Donald Trump is.  And then there are times like this when you post what is clearly an illogical statement.  Of course Trump is interfering with the results of the election.  It couldn't be any more in your face if you were wearing it as a hat.

How can you ask that? The man has been an incredible bully for 4 years, day in and day out.  He has made it easy for decent people of all political leanings to be afraid of the consequences should they ever cross him by doing their job or telling the truth or getting in the way of whatever he wants no matter how unscrupulous.  Example?  Marie Jovanovich. Her 33 years of service to this country was exemplary.  But she was too honest and compassionate to play ball with Trump's Ukraine shenanigans.  So he removed her from her post in a very public way, and she was forced into retirement.  Alex Vindman is another good example, as is his twin brother Yevgeny S. Vindman.  Alex was fired after testifying at Trump's impeachment hearing and was escorted off of White House grounds. Yevgeny was also removed from his post and was escorted off of White House grounds with his brother, who had nothing whatsoever to do with the impeachment hearings. Those are but 2 examples of Trump's thirst for revenge.  Tonight's rally in Georgia earlier this evening was another example that highlights the issue at hand.  The crowd started chanting 'Lock Kemp up', and Trump just stood there and smiled.  Gov. Kemp has done nothing wrong, but the damage is done.  His name will forever be associated with voter improprieties and there isn't a damn thing he can do about it.

Okay Tacos! Answer me this? How much 'exhaustion' or "bite at the apple" are you willing to give this guy, Donald?

How many recounts are you willing to do if it was you? How many times should you have to say, I've got nothing new, but let's try (nothing) one more time?

What kind of fool do you take me for to suggest that election vote counting is a "seeker" activity? It is not. It is an official count and one with reasonable limits.

Just because Donald "wants it" does not in any way shape or form me this nation is obligated to give it to him limitless.

Nor has he tried to do that. He doesn't have the authority. That's why he has to appeal to those who do. So far, the answer has been "no."

As much as the law allows.

As many as the law allows.

How many times should you have to say, I've got nothing new, but let's try (nothing) one more time?

How many times does the law allow for?

Are you starting to get the picture?

This should be the standard for everyone, if they respect the law. All of these people who are protesting so loud about Trump's efforts are being hypocritical. They cry "count every vote" when they think it will help them. When Biden didn't have the votes yet, they demanded "keep counting!"

But now, because an appeal that finds fault might take away votes, they shout "It's over! No more appeals! No more hearings! No more counting! No audits! Any further effort is a disgrace, etc."

Hypocrisy. Total hypocrisy.

By asking the Governor of GA to overturn the certified results  of the election, he is trying to overturn the results of the election. I believe it is known as "conspiracy," which yet again dovetails into his personality.

So, yes, he is actively trying or has tried to overturn duly certified election results.

BS. There is no appeal that (yet) takes away votes. Indeed, every appeal as it is being labeled has been denied or dropped in a court of law. So, now comes the back-door attempts to rig the election. Apparently, this course of action is par for the course for some conservatives. Just by-pass the voter's capacity to decide, court proceedings to deny, and just lobby red states to take away from (in this case) those Black/Brown citizens their voting power to help decide the president of the country.

Some conservatives speak with forked tongues! Black Americans won't join up and vote with cheaters against the truth.

Tacos! This is the reason why Black Americans call BS on Trump in the first place. Trump is a dirty bastard who cheats at every turn of the wheel—and then some. According to Donald, the voters can't defeat him because he never gives them the satisfaction of their winning. And here some conservatives are standing up for that dirty ugly 'loser'!

And some conservatives have the gall to compare what I have written or democrats to the weak sauce some conservatives have poured up for themselves! Some nerve.

It's sad that I, we, have to respond to these weird, so-called, arguments. Donald Trump is not worth all this. He truly is not worth all this. Alas, this may all come to a (sad) end when somebody, maybe even a republican has his or her life removed at the hands of a. . . republican. Not death-wishing it. But, the handwriting is on the wall if this continues escalating to nowhere.

That I even have to bring this up, shows just have far and unreasonable this is. Donald lost. Concede already. Biden won, he will be properly seated according to his victory!

That sounds like vague fantasy stuff to me. A lot of fear mongering over nothing. I have seen no indication that anything is being done outside the bounds of the law.

Black Americans won't join up and vote with cheaters against the truth.

It must be awesome to be able to speak for Black Americans.

Worth what? All the anxiety? If so, I agree. But between the two of us, which one is most worked up over it? It sure isn't me.

Concede already.

Why? Who cares as long as he vacates the White House when he is supposed to?

Stacey Abrams still hasn't conceded in Georgia, where she lost an election two years ago. And there are Democrats walking around still claiming that the election was stolen from her. I know a governor's race lacks the gravitas of a presidential election, but how come the same people who are ok with that, are in a tizzy because Trump hasn't conceded?

Biden won, he will be properly seated according to his victory!

Exactly. And in two months, it won't matter that Trump never conceded.

Some conservatives can talk 'turkey' all they want. After all these are the holidays. However, we all know what good home-training, decency, ethics, morals,  standards and practices look like and when these are being broken or left out.

After all, some conservatives don't need a set of laws to write and speak crap about democrats and they are not even running scandalous behaviors. As the saying goes (in the supreme court of our land): even a dog knows the difference between someone stumbling over it and a swift kick!

Donald Trump is a chump. Don't support chumps for preeminent world leader. A chump will fail and a virus may overrun the country some conservatives live in and kill thousands upon thousands in several short months, plunging the rest of us into wearing masks indoors and out!

Whataboutism. Then you answer your own question. Donald Trump lost "by a lot" —didn't he? Stacy Abrams did not make private phone calls that became public attempting to disenfranchise Georgia voters did she? Some conservative distraction is BS.

BTW, when I say concede I don't care if Donald verbalizes the words- I just need him to stop trying to poison our democracy with his lies, misinformation, and deceitfulness. Thank you for giving me a chance to clarify that point!

Donald Trump is low-class trashy. He is trying to disenfranchise Black voters in Georgia, even going so low as to speak ill of a fellow republican governor and other elected officials when they "broadcast" his ass for calling them and pleading with them to cheat the voters of their state!

Shame on some conservatives who do not keep the standards they try to push on democrats!

Whataboutism

A claim often made by people who want to deflect from their own hypocrisy.

Donald Trump lost "by a lot" —didn't he?

Did he? "By a lot?" He won 25 states. By geopolitical lines, that's half the country. He has some close losses, too. 0.2% in Georgia. 0.3% in Arizona. 0.7% in Wisconsin. 1.2% in Pennsylvania.

Overall, I still think his loss is convincing enough that he would need a whole string of miracles to change the outcome. Even so, his margin of loss doesn't diminish his rights. Nor does it demand a concession. A concession is a nicety. It's sporting. It's gentile. You can think less of him for not giving one, but he doesn't owe it to anyone and the lack of it changes nothing in the election.

Stacy Abrams did not

Who cares what she did or did not do? This is so typical of the hypocrisy I see. The same basic behavior is excused in the Democrat because it is allegedly less offensive than whatever it is that Trump did. It's disingenuous spin.

I just need him to stop trying to poison our democracy with his lies, misinformation, and deceitfulness

That would be nice, but the 1st Amendment gives people the right to be full of shit. Trump has always been who he is. He will go on being that person. You might as well wish for water to stop being wet.

I know a governor's race lacks the gravitas of a presidential election, but how come the same people who are ok with that, are in a tizzy because Trump hasn't conceded ?

So don't lecture me about calling you out for it. Furthermore, Stacy Abrams did not make private phone calls that became public attempting to disenfranchise Georgia voters did she?  Context matters and by the way, degrees can not be ignored but are put to the test under consideration.

President Donald Trump in taking the oath of office promised:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States

It is apparent to all who care to have it so, that telephoning the Governor of Georgia in a backroom attempt to overturn a state election result is a selfish interest not faithful to the citizens who took the time and associated risks involved to register, and post their votes.

I don't know why some conservatives think it affirmative to counter with defense of a "bottom-feeder"  like Donald J. Trump. He bites in a full circle and cuts to the quick of friend and newly minted foe. Some conservatives, it is clear as Governor Kemp being under current attack by Donald "the piranha," would be politically bloodied for showing courage while in the deep end when Donald turns on them.

Pointing out hypocrisy is not whataboutism. This was explained to you already. Perhaps you don't know what whataboutism is.

Whataboutism is defined as:

the technique or practice of responding to an accusation or difficult question by making a counteraccusation or raising a different issue.

That's not what I did. What I did was point out that some people are outraged about behavior in one person, but ignore it in another person because of political party affiliation. Condemning something you approve for someone else is hypocrisy.

Meanwhile, you keep trying to label me so you can attack me personally on that basis. You might think you are exposing something about me, but that tactic reveals more about you than it does about me.

No, but I do see hundreds of liberal / leftist / "progressive" never Trumper fools who have been crying and running with EVERY hoax imaginable since 2016.

My understanding of the phrase "never trump" is embodied republicans and conservatives who broke with Trumpism.

Thus, I don't see any republican or conservative on NT that speaks up for moderation and against the autocratic statements and sentiments of Trump supporters on NT. So I ask the question: Are there Never Trumpers on NT?

I am not a "Never Trumper" according to my supplied definition. For a good work, for Operation Warp Speed for example I am grateful.

However, Had Donald moderated his att-i-tude, talked to adults like adults, treated people who were trying to "process" his methods with some respect, stopped lying to the nation everyday, stopped ruining his subordinates careers, not tried to gaslight the entirety of the nation-world, not with (attempts) to steamroll the citizenry, and joined us in the only reality we have (instead of his own 'world') I could see him at least as republican/conservative. Without the aforementioned in some or whole combination, I see him as a Disgust!

I won't rehash/argue "hoaxes" with you, Jeremy. Let's just say we disagree on what a delusion is. Donald Trump is evidentially controlling the minds of his followers. You can see this in stark relief, as Trump supporters are in favor of lame legal proceedings failing in so-called conservative courts and "Stop The Steal," and the consuming of their fellow Trump supporters/voters who are 'driven' to have some integrity in their professional lives apart from Donald!

This should be easy for you then. Help me out: Point out a republican/conservative Never Trumper on Newstalkers? I would stand corrected!

And for the rest of the thinking world a "Never Trumper" is somebody, like yourself, who has bitched, whined and cried every day since the announcement that Trump beat the establishment.  [deleted]

Well, those Never Trumpers beat the perm out Donald's hairdo, and he has been sweating his wig since. I mean really, a grown man, sitting at the apex of the world, begging for a national delusion to take hold so that he can continue to broadcast "insanities" from the White House to his adoring sycophantic cult.

The 2020 presidential election was not about Donald's abstract and eccentric reasons to wish to lead us, the fact is, that cycle was about more concrete and human matters, because people need to ground their truth into something. Trump plants his 'constructs' in mid-air, where he can bat them all aside at will.

Now, why would you all approve of something like that?

Is it hard or impossible for you to name one on NT?

So I guess the "quid pro quo" in the Russia Ukraine scandal was totally valid on that "perfect call". This is the pattern of corrupt behavior that Trump is totally ingrained with.
