Anthony Fauci , the nation’s top infectious disease expert and a member of the White House coronavirus task force, said he plans to tell a Senate panel on Tuesday that there will be “needless” fatalities if the country reopens too soon amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"The major message that I wish to convey to the Senate [Health, Labor and Pensions] committee ... is the danger of trying to open the country prematurely," Fauci wrote in an email to The New York Times.

"If we skip over the checkpoints in the guidelines to: 'Open America Again,' then we risk the danger of multiple outbreaks throughout the country. This will not only result in needless suffering and death, but would actually set us back on our quest to return to normal," he added.

Fauci is one of four administration officials appearing remotely as witnesses to answer senators' questions regarding the pandemic and state openings.

In his email, Fauci referred to the White House guidelines for states to reopen nonessential businesses.

States across the country have started reopening, and in some cases states have not met the recommended requirement of having a 14-day downward trajectory in documented COVID-19 cases before starting gradual plans.

Senate Health Committee Chairman  Lamar Alexander  (R-Tenn.) said Saturday that four administration officials, including Fauci, would appear as witnesses at the hearing Tuesday via video conferencing.

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield and Assistant Secretary for Health Brett Giroir will also appear at the hearing.

The virus has infected more than 1.3 million people and killed 80,684 people in the U.S., according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University .

Let us count how many Trump comments that Fauci will be confronted with.

Waiting until there are no new cases and zero deaths have occurred is a stupid idea and not an option.

The country must get back to work gradually in steps before more lives are ruined.

Trump is not responsible for the appearance of the virus, and he and his team have done the best they can

considering that the Democrats have dragged their feet and tried to slow down the recovery.

Doctors are overly cautious when giving medical advice, for them there's no down side to being overly cautious in fact it can prevent a lot of problems for them. The problem is many times their advice is not practical in the real world, they're only concerned with health and health care while we need to be concerned with all aspects of our lives and society at large. I remember when I was a teen my buddy wouldn't pop his zits, he'd have this pustule on his nose and he wouldn't pop it. He said his doctor told him never to pop a zit because it could get infected (as if the pustule wasn't an infection already). I though this was stupid so I asked my doctor and he gave me that same advice "don't pop them or they might get infected" I laughed in his face and I have popped every zit I ever had and never had a problem because I know that a zit is an infection and leaving it to fester is worse than popping it and cleaning and treating the wound. But that's just their medical training (Lawsuit prevention) that makes them give overly cautious advice even though they probably pop their own zits.

ig,

You have just deliberately applied a different standard to Dr. Fauci than you did to President Trump.  Trump had the same information that you've just stated that Fauci had, yet Fauci gets a pass while you consider that Trump lied.  Total hypocrisy.  I've noticed this tendency with anti Trumpers before, including some here.  If another person makes a misstatement, if they didn't have accurate information, well, that just means that they were misinformed or reached a wrong conclusion.  If Trump has the same thing happen, "HE LIED HE LIED HE LIED" is all you hear from the anti Trumpers.  Maybe they should grow up, if that's possible.  By the double standard that they use, they have sacrificed all their credibility whenever they talk about Trump.  They don't seem to realize that many of us don't even like Donald Trump, but we DESPISE his enemies.

YES, he didn't pull a Trump an PURPOSELY LIE TO    US    ALL

Hippocrazcy  U say, well, beleave it or knot, i'll disagree.

When Trumps' EXPERT, after reviewing more detailed and extensive findings on and about said 'NEW' Virus, HIS recommendaions rightfully Changed, Why Didn't Trumps' ?

Y for TWO FRCKN MONTHS did TRUMP LIE yet AGAIN and AGAIN about this virus, thus leaving those silly enough to believe the LIAR in Chief, and then not taking it serious, till tens of thousnds MORE had been infected, and thus  a percentage  wound up DEAD !

I watched Trump state one :LIE after another, as his EXPERTS  had to walk him back as his answers were NOT TRUTHFUL. THey actually contradicted the potUS in the SAME briefings, again WTF.

I witnessed one intelligent Scientist learn new FACTS about Virus and instantly modify his EXPERT recommendations, while Trump just continued to downplay the severity, and said it might magically go away...    Are we in a fantasy movie here or something ? These things don't just 'go away'.  One guy fromChina is now a few million and over 80,000 DEAD.

If Trump had truly

listened to his experts and implemented all of their suggestions in a timely fashion, our infection rate and death toll would have been significantly lower.

Instead, due to his main re-election campaign strength, the economy, TRump LIED again and again.

If something is so new, and you have Scientific experts learning about it and as they learn, modifying these suggestive recommendations, that is the SMART Scientific method observed.

When you have a Pol, who incessantly LIES about everything, nd DOES NOT MODIFY the Message that his EXPERTS did, therein LIES the problem, and the REASON the US leads the WORLD in infections and deaths,

can you still stand all this winning....?

A simple yet vexing question, whom do you trust more in the dealing with the facts and fallout of dealing with the pandemic, Dr. Fauci or Trump?

In answering the question, one need only look at motivation. One is a trained and competent scientist speaking to the ramifications of re-opening before we are totally prepared. The other is solely interested in being re-elected regardless of those ramifications, and sadly, more than willing to diminish the influence of the fact-finders in his purely self-serving political interests.

Not one "Expert" has said one word about it. All we hear is that they added another month to the lock up, with no seeming end in sight.

Funny thing.....everyone that insists we listen to the "Experts", is going BROKE. In the meantime, they keep getting paid for telling us we must stay inside and continue to go BROKE !

It's interesting that Fauci said what he said back in January,  and just above it's excused because we didn't know as much about the virus as we do now. Yet aren't these some of the same posters who point out how badly Trump managed the entire pandemic and if he had only taken certain actions back in January the death toll would be so much less.

It just seems like some people don't want to bother remembering yesterday nearly as much as they want to just argue.

A simple yet vexing question, whom do you trust more in the dealing with the facts and fallout of dealing with the pandemic, Dr. Fauci or Trump?

I haven't really faced that question. Thus far Fauci has recommended and Trump has fulfilled the recommendations.

In answering the question, one need only look at motivation.

If I'm looking at motivations, I have to look at everyone's. IMO progressives obviously want American death and economic collapse all in order to defeat Trump.

Aren't you glad you asked me?

What that just being wrong or did he mean to say WE HAVEN"T GOT ANY RIGHT NOW!!!  And what about shutting everything down?  Wht didn't we just quarantine everyone over 65 and put a mask on everyone who needed to go to work?  There's a question for Fauci!

In answering the question, one need only look at motivation. One is a trained and competent scientist speaking to the ramifications of re-opening before we are totally prepared.

Not quite.  The doctor is speaking only to the medical ramifications of re opening.  That is what he is trained for.  Outside of his medical training, he has no more training than any of us, probably less.  He is a specialist, knowing only his specialty.  You are expecting him to know how to handle problems in Economics and Sociology when he has had no training for them.  That's why Dr. Fauci is not in charge and the President is; because all of the President's training and experience lead him toward the "Fuzzy Studies" that science proponents like Dr. Fauci ignore.  In this situation, those things are just as important as the medical problems.

In Turkey, the government has thrown HC at everyone with the virus—more than 117,000 cases. 3000 have died, but that’s lower than the global death rate, Turkish officials say. The “relatively low death toll is thanks to treatment protocols in the country, which involve two existing drugs—the controversial anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine touted by President Trump, and Japanese antiviral favipiravir,” CBS News   reports .

  • I never mentioned President Trump in my comment. Why did you? Projecting again? But, since you did ...

Many MDs and scientists have stated that they found that the Hydroxychloroquine/Zithromax combination worked very well BUT only to be used at the onset/early stages of Hunan Virus/COVID-19 symptoms.

Trump won't accept information he doesn't like.

That is your opinion, and it is not based upon facts.

Also, as Dr Fauci said, he doesn't weigh in on the economics, he weighs in on the medical and scientific.  When he calls for a shut down its to save American lives.

While you are correct in saying that Fauci doesn't weigh in on the effects of the virus on our national economics, his one-size-fits-all "medical and scientific" opinions clearly show that he does not consider our nation's psychological health even close to being equally important as our physical health.

Thank God Fauci has been exposed as a fraud.  This guy has F'ed things up so badly and now he is trying to cover his ass.

"Needless Fatalities"?  So which fatalities are needed Fauci?   We know enough right now to say that there will be more fatalities no matter which course of action is taken.

We also know several more things.

  • There are certain demographic characteristics that put members of the population at greater risk of fatality but we are not putting enough focus on addressing those risks.
  • Geography also plays a part in the spread and virulence of the disease and we probably are not approaching this from a proper framework.
  • Lockdowns will not eradicate the virus.
  • There is no safe option.  Lockdowns have their own sets of mortality risks along with other devastating impacts with some quantifiable and others not readily apparent.
  • In particular healthcare among the same higher risk groups will suffer and will result in large numbers of deaths and severe impacts that otherwise would be avoided or reduced.
  • They may not be able to develop a vaccine with a high degree of efficacy. There are no vaccines for HIV.  I am not aware of a vaccine for any Corona Virus at this time.  Either way waiting on a vaccine is untenable.
  • There is chance that certain therapies could be developed to treat the virus making it less virulent, but it's too early to tell if drugs like Remdesivir will prove to curtail fatality.

Some things we don't know fully but may want to consider based on the above info.

  • Chances are you will be exposed to the virus at some point. Are you prepared?
  • We most likely have not seen the worst of the epidemic.  Antibody testing suggests a low level exposure among the general population. However it appears to be higher in the general population on the West Coast
  • The economy is likely heading for Great Depression era type numbers on a global scale.  Conservatively, there will probably not be much of a recovery within one to two years.  Many millions will face lingering economic consequences for the remainder of their lives.
  • The virus may become less contagious in areas with higher heat and humidity.
  • Indoor spread appears more likely than outdoor spread.
  • How airborne the virus is in the form or aerosols?
  • Is six feet of distance really safe? How much time does it linger in the air.  Are masks really offering much protection if you can breathe through them efficiently.

You should be allowed to make you own judgments as to how to mitigate your risk, or you can risk your life and your economic future relying on the judgment of incompetent bureaucrats.

Politics will play too big a part in how we proceed from here. FEAR is a powerful emotion and will be exploited by unscrupulous Democrat politicians, their allies in the media and plenty of other opportunists.

What is your role in this going to be?

You should be allowed to make you own judgments as to how to mitigate your risk , or you can risk your life and your economic future relying on the judgment of incompetent bureaucrats.

You raised very good points.   But this jrSmiley_115_smiley_image.png ( quoted ) makes no sense when dealing with a societal problem.

Mitigating one's own risk certainly makes sense in general principle.   If someone wishes to avoid good practices such as washing hands for 20 seconds, not touching one's face, etc. then the increased risk of getting sick is on them.   However, with a virus as infectious as coronovirus there is no thinking about an individual in isolation.   If one is interacting with others in society one's personal choices affect others.

The coronavirus is airborne.   It infects people through the air, through surfaces (for days) and, much worse, infected people may be walking around for days not knowing that they are infecting others.

When dealing with an infectious virus, the idea that an individual can make decisions that only affect the individual does not exist.   The nature of this pandemic is such that we take societal actions for the good of society.   This is a societal issue, not an individual issue.

But, again, you raise very good points that those making the societal decisions hopefully are considering.

First, I did not state nor did I imply that we lose our right to self-determination so your question does not follow from what I wrote.

However, I can answer your question anyway.    The CotUS empowers the legislative branch to make laws and the executive branch to execute same.    During an emergency, our government can indeed impose restrictions to help ensure the safety of society.

The fact that government has imposed restrictions does not mean we have lost our right of self-determination.   Rather, it means that our choices have been limited.   For example, you can self-determine to drive 60mph in a 30mph zone.   But by doing so our laws have determined that you are putting others in danger and thus your ability to act on your self-determination is mitigated by law.

Similarly, if you mix with the population (since you might be infected) you would be putting others in danger.

The CotUS supports these restrictions but these restrictions do not take away our right to self-determine;  they restrict our actions for the safety of society.

I guess the key terms are "in Florida." For a state with a population of 21.48 Million.  "That is 9 million more than Pennsylvania and Illinois, and 15 million more than Massachusetts. Yet those smaller states have 57,000, 78,000 and 78,000 positive cases, respectively, as of Sunday. Florida is nearing 40,000. The most important number, deaths, is even more surprising. Pennsylvania: 3,700 people have died of Covid-19. Massachusetts: almost 5,000. Illinois: around 3,400. And Florida? Fewer than 1,800."

I’m waiting for what Tucker said tonight to go from Fox video to you tube but you tube may have censored it.

Fox News is so right on in its coverage of the protests that started in Michigan and went nationwide and in their coverage of the re opening of the states and restarting the economy.  They mentioned last night that Georgia re opened first and much more so and more quickly than even the President wanted and yet to this point no viral comeback there as a result.  Nothing in South Dakota either except for the meat plant that would have been open regardless.  Virtually everything I’ve seeded or said originated from Fox News or one of its contributors said at another place and I watch the 8 pm-12 midnight eastern time block on Fox almost every night so I make no apologies for anything that I’ve said or seeded here and stand by every bit of it as mainstream populist conservative media fare.

So, President Trump didn’t create a commission to deal with the issue.  He didn’t stop travel from China or Europe? He didn’t shut everything down upon recommendation to bend the curve?

Hell no, all of that is a figment of your imagination.  He also didn't use Presidential powers to get Americas industries to retool to help in the fight against the virus.  He hasn't been a proponent of ensuring that new and effective testing isn't on the front burner either.

Dr. Fucmi is a fraud. A bureaucrat of the CYA brigade who has failed miserably in his role.  You know it or should know it.
