The 'reality' show, "naked and Afraid" involves one man and one woman, dumped naked into a hostile environment, who must somehow survive for 21 days.  The couple are allowed one tool each, usually a machete, a pot, a fire starter, or another tool, (one lady brought a magnifying glass, one a mosquito net).  They are provided with a satellite map of the area and each has a burlap bag.  The last one I watched, the couple was provided with a fire starter to share, a first! Not only are they...

Opening day was a month ago, and I had yet to get out on the water. Sometimes, when they aren't offered, opportunities must be made. So I played "hookee" today, although more accurately I was the hooker. One of my favorite spots on the Pomperaug River in beautiful Woodbury Connecticut. I caught 3 beautiful Rainbows along this stretch this afternoon. I used a Celilo ultra-light rod with a Shimano AXUCL reel spooled with 2lb test Berkley Ultra Limp line. I tied on a single...

Water quality: A Minnesota maelstrom

By:  @community, 8 months ago

Latest By:  @petey-coober, 8 months ago

When it comes to protecting water, Minnesota voters have stepped up twice, by amending the state Constitution to raise funds through the State Lottery and by expanding the sales tax. The result is tens of millions of dollars spent annually on the state’s storied lakes and rivers. So, with all that spending, water quality must be improving, right? No, say multiple state reports. In fact, things are getting worse. Last year Gov. Mark Dayton declared that water quality decline is...

I consider myself a pretty damn good shot.   My eyesight isn’t the best, but that’s not the only variable in marksmanship.   It’s the one variable that is limited in how it can be corrected, but others can.   Like weapon, optics, and ammunition.   When I first moved to Missouri and took up hunting deer again, the first deer I killed was shot through the spine.   It died, but it suffered.   And that didn’t set well with me.   I was using an old British Enfield .303 which...

THE MYSTERY OF CALIFORNIA'S 'ALBINO' REDWOODS COULD BE SOLVED

Standing less than ten feet tall, the so-called "ghosts of the forest" are typically dwarfed by their giant, green-needled kin. These mutated plants can't produce their own energy and they live only a short time before dying off. It's a strange existence – one that has puzzled naturalists since these trees were first documented in 1866.   An "albino" plant isn't the same as an albino animal. The latter condition causes the absence of the pigment melanin, but in plants, it comes down to...

Dead animals were found lying on top of each other, many with their antlers entangled, after the thunderstorm on the Hardanger plateau in southern Norway on Friday. The waiting room at St. Lambert Lock in Montreal looks out at a quarter-mile of chain-link fence, six security camera towers, a blaze-orange derrick and a guardhouse. There, three armed men stare at a 750-foot stretch of placid, blue-green water waiting to lift 33,000-ton freighters up along the St. Lawrence Seaway . The lock is part of the oldest and most traveled inland waterway in America — a 2,300-mile corridor that connects the Atlantic Ocean with all five Great Lakes and the...

A new study shows that trees of different species can exchange large amounts of carbon via the fungal internet that connects their roots.   In 1999, a team of scientists led by Christian Körner did what thousands of people do every Christmas: they wrapped Norway spruce trees in tubes. Except this was in March, not December. And the trees were 40-metre-tall giants in the middle of a Swiss forest, not 2-metre pipsqueaks in a living room. (The team had to use a crane). And...

Isle Royale National Park officials in 2014 started the environmental review process on what, if anything, to do about the big Lake Superior island's wolf population that has been dwindling for years....
