New Function: Member NTship!
Just for the fun of it.

Hello NTers

You have probably noticed a new notation under your name. If you were an old-timer from Newsvine, think of this as like Vineicity, but this tells you about your life here on the NT.

Being a teacher, I wanted to use a scale that would be intuitive to understand.

The top word tells you how long you have been here at NT. In order they go:

  • Freshmen
  • Sophomore
  • Junior
  • Senior
  • Masters
  • PhD
  • Professor

The second word is to designate how many posts you have made while being a member. In order they go:

  • Silent (few or no comments)
  • Quiet
  • Participates
  • Guide
  • Expert
  • Principal

I hope you enjoy this new addition to the site.

I was wondering what that was. Was thinking a glitch in the matrix.

Then I was trying to remember what the vineicities were. I had a couple of them. I remember thinking I would never get the last one.

Being a bit more specific now from the more technical perspective, there are essentially two grades:  seniority and contribution.

The top word tells you how long you have been here at NT.

This is seniority.   It is more complex than simply how long you have been here.   It is a weighted function based on your participation levels on the site over time.   Thus members who have been registered for years but have not been very active will not have much seniority.   Also, seniority degrades over time.   A very active member in 2015 who is hardly around today will have a low seniority.

The second word is to designate how many posts you have made while being a member.

This is contribution and it is a very involved computation that considers original articles vs seeds, number of article votes up, number of comments in the article, etc.  and of course raw number of articles posted (original and seed counted distinctly).   It also factors in comments, votes up on your comments and the number of comments your comment encouraged (i.e. if you write a comment on 3.1 and it heads a thread of 50 comments, that is good for your contribution).

As with seniority, contribution degrades over time.  So your contribution this month counts just a bit more than your contribution last month and so on back in time.

Finally, tickets and suspensions count against contribution.   These too fade over time.   So a bad month could indeed change your contribution level.

Ultimately this is just for fun.   Most of the other sites offer something similar to this so it makes sense that NT offer its own variant.   And this is all computed automatically based on accumulated metrics in the NT database.    It is what it is.

I don't agree that seniority should degrade over time as it is based upon time of membership rather than contributions.  Once a member has been here from the start he should retain that seniority since it is based on length of time as a member, until retirement or death, and then the designation should change from Professor to "Emeritus" as long as their membership is still registered.

Seniority is a function of time and participation.   It is also weighted from current to the past.   So, for example, members who were active years ago and then went silent will see their seniority in an atrophied condition.   It still counts, but less.   Basically, if someone is not participating on the site their seniority will atrophy with time.

In short, seniority is not simply current-date minus registration-date.

It is a calculation based on participation over time.   Think it through.   If seniority were simply based on sign-up date then someone who signed up 5 years ago and did not participate would have the highest level of seniority.

Surely you see the problem with that.   They would have the same seniority level as you.

Bob, there is nothing to vet here.   Seniority is not simply 'the time since one registered an account on NT'.   That would make no sense.   Do you understand why?

So, assuming you do, you should recognize that it makes sense to count seniority when a member is participating and not count it when they are not participating.

9.1.14  TᵢG  replied to  Trout Giggles @9.1.12    3 years ago

Seniority being simply the time since one registers an account with NT would not be a very accurate reflection.   Odd that anyone would object to seniority being a function of participation over time rather than simply time.

Bob, there is nothing to vet here.

Of course there is. You parameterized the algorithm. With other parameters it would produce other results. The algorithm can be tuned to produce whatever results are desired.

I cannot imagine that you simply dumped numbers into the algorithm, by guess and by gosh.

The logical process is to test the algorithm's results, and then fine tune your parameters, iteratively, until it provides results that are satisfactory.

I cannot imagine that you might do otherwise.

And therefore, it seems perfectly reasonable to assume that Management agrees with these rankings.

Do you seek seniority...

I don't "seek" anything. I observe...

If your target is "seniority" then it would be "date of inscription". If the target is "presence", then "total number of days present". If the target is "assiduity", then: (days present) / (days inscribed). There are surely lots of other approaches, and of course the algorithm could use several definitions, weighted according to what Management considers most important.

I assume that is the process that was used, here.

Okay, from now on you should consider what has been labeled the 'seniority' grade to be the 'assiduity' grade.   I think most people would find 'seniority' a friendlier term, but if you want to call it assiduity then it works given how you defined it.

Labels aside, do you understand why it makes no sense to simply calculate the number of days since a member registered their account without considering whether or not they participated on the site?   Time and participation  vs.  (merely) Time?

That's nonsense. The second indicator is dedicated to "participation", so it would be foolish to inject it here. Unless you actually mean "presence"... which is not the same thing...

It would be perfectly reasonable to include, here, both seniority and assiduity. A formula would be needed to give each of those topics whatever weight Management desires.

Going overboard on "assiduity" would also be ridiculous: a thirty-day veteran, present every one of those thirty day, would score 100%... which is probably not what you want.

I repeat, "a formula is required". With coefficients.

And you can fiddle the coefficients however you like...

Bob if this is only about your 'scores' then note that you have the highest contribution level and are closing in on the next level of assiduity (as you would prefer).   This is all a function of what you have done.   It is simply mathematics.   Sandy's 'scores' are calculated using the exact same mathematics as yours (and everyone else).   The only difference is the data.

Sandy's 'scores' are calculated using the exact same mathematics as yours (and everyone else).

Why do you put "scores" in quotation marks? Isn't that exactly what these are?

I do not doubt that you used the same formulas for everyone. Comparing the results of various members, I doubt the formulas' validity, but since they are not public, I have no way of checking.

I have no problem with Sandy getting good "grades" (since you don't want to use "scores"). She is active, and suffering through the pain of Moderation should be worth scads of bonus points to make up for the fact that she doesn't seed all that much. I do have a problem with "a lot of manufactured outrage around here". A Mod might find that to be at the limit of "trolling".

As you can see, some are resistant to anything new here

They are simply spoil sports and try to dampen the fun for others. However, I won't let that happen for me. I am having great fun with it, and I don't think I am alone.

There is no reason for the majority to have to give it up for the very few who don't like it. But, then, they don't like anything that isn't all about them.

Greg,

Obviously, you didn't even read the article associated with this. Your time here is on a scale that is used like in college. So, you have spent about the time that a sophomore has spent here. If you spend more time, then you will be a junior... and so forth. It is not that your comments are sophomoric. If you are looking for an insult, there is none.

Class systems yield a benefit. This is not a class system since there is no benefit. This was just supposed to be fun.

I have been trying to post our history on Everipedia ( everipedia.org ), and when I was reading our history I began to rethink about those people who have been with NT since the beginning. NewsTalkers has been around longer than our current site (and its data) shows.   Because of this, and because this was supposed to be a fun function, I have decided to grandfather in all founding / long-standing members who are still active on the site.   This will cause them all to show a seniority of Professor (the highest level).

I hope this helps.

No. We first did a civil ceremony for legal purposes - no guests for that.

Then about 7 or 8 weeks later we did the traditional ceremony where we had guests, and a banquet following for friends and family.

800

But we also had a lot of photos taken for our wedding album.  I particlularly like this one in which we are wearing ancient traditional wedding costumes.
